They’re expecting to keep being free by fleeing, they don’t do it planning to go to jail.
It’s definitely not worth it, prison is terrible, you’re probably going to be raped by other people there in the first day, and you’ll start smoking, using drugs, and will always be in the middle of fights, when you get out of it, you’ll already be addicted to the drugs, not to mention you’ll most likely become a more serious(ish) person.

Is it worth it to rob like a few thousand dollars or kill someone and then stay being “tortured” and living terribly in jail, and when you come out see your live ruined and even more miserable?

They rob to get money, and expect to get away with it, if it really was worth it they would just let themselves get locked in jail, they got teh munneh, aimirite?

Being a criminal doesn’t automatically make you a “gangster”

They should kill themselves then, it ends up with their suffering and makes no harm to the society at all, it may even be good. </evil>

If they’re so desperate, why not just kill yourself instead of harming other people?

You have to realize that people are shortsighted enough that they think it’s the best option. It should be pretty obvious that getting an education and a job are better than stealing a televison to make rent in the long run.
If they’re so desperate, why not just kill yourself instead of harming other people?
Because not everyone thats desperate is suicidal?

So why assume that every desperate is a robber/murderer?

I feel it is your society’s fault.
Your teachers aren’t paid well. Aren’t trained well. Aren’t being forced to be a classroom facilitator for a year before being a teacher. Pay them the starting salary they deserve, $80,000, subsidise your college education for teachers by 50%, and watch America beat Singapore.
How does this link back to the topic? Education has wide ranging benefits. But if you meet shit teachers, you are screwed for life.
You also need an emphasis on holistic schooling. Where are the 90% discounts on trade schools? Where is the WPA? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_Progress_Administration)
In a time of recession, you need things like this to stop getting desperate people.
