For those uneducated on this subject, I suggest you read this at this link:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/weightlosssurgery.html

Bariatric surgery, what are your feeling on it?

In specific, do you feel this is a ‘easy way out’ for the obese, super-obese, and morbidly obese to take?

Do you feel it ‘cheapens’ their weight loss in the end? For example, some people call immigrants who become Americans ‘citizens’, but really do not consider them ‘true’ citizens due to the fact they were not born in the U.S.A.

So with that thinking in mind, some people I have experienced personally, do not feel that the weight loss achieved after 2 years of having Bariatric surgery is not equal to getting a similar result from a strict diet, vigorous exercise, etc.

Why do you feel this is? Why is there this stigma in society, which some call the last stigma we have?

Wait.. I thought YOU’RE the doctor… shouldn’t you know why diet and exercise is better than a goddam surgery?

The decision to actually go through with the operation must be extremely difficult for many people, as it’s not exactly risk-free, and totally changes your life afterwards (not just in the losing weight department). Some of the surgeries are irreversable, and the ones that can be reversed carry with them the constant temptation to decide ’I’ve had enough, I want to eat properly again’.

Of course the willpower of the ‘natural slimmers’ is to be praised, but I don’t think one method is any better, or more worthy of admiration than the other.

So no, I wouldn’t say it cheapens their weight loss. I used NRT to help me quit smoking, but it was still the hardest thing I’ve ever done… and if anyone told me the NRT cheapened my achievement, I’d slap them with all the nicotine-withdrawal rage I could muster.

First of all, for many patients that ‘god damn’ surgery is a life changer – for the better. They physically cannot excessive due to their weight.

Of course the optimal way is for a strict and controlled diet, carefully balanced, along with at least an hour of vigorous excessive a day.

I am trying to evoke discussion about the stigma that surrounds this type of surgery. I see it often, and it’s blatant and I really do not feel people realize how hurtful it is.

This type of surgery is not a walk in the park, it is not a miracle fix – the patient needs to very carefully follow the diet afterward, or the new pouch will cause trouble.

Proof? What med school did you graduate from? Where did you complete your residency
and how long was that? Where are you currently licensed to practice and in what capacity?
Just curious here.

stigma that surrounds this type of surgery

I’m not aware of any stigma. The people I know that have gotten the surgery, do so
for valid medical reasons and aren’t suffering from any social stigma because of it.

Anyway, to answer the user ‘yourmomma69696’ who is curious about myself:

I attended the medical school at SUNY-Brooklyn. ( downstate medical college )

I then did my residency at St. Vincents Hospital, in Staten Island.

I am a M.D., Internal Medicine. I am thinking about moving into a fellowship, probably surgery.

What years?

it’s probably not the same as a strict diet and vicorous exercise because of the health benefits that exercise give you. And, you know, scars. Oh, and death. But, obviously, as a doctor, you would have a way better idea of the medical advantages and disadvantages than i have.

And otherwise? i can’t see how going from fat to not-fat can be a bad thing.

I will answer your questions in my profile, for this is not proper and is not on topic here.

For those uneducated on this subject

This tells me that you are saying that you are educated on the subject.

some people I have experienced personally

Experienced in your “practice” or just those you know personally?

Why is there this stigma in society, which some call the last stigma we have?

What stigma are you talking about? Please give an example.

You’re the guy who claims to be a doctor, I’m just asking for some clarification.
If you post it in SD, you’re going to be questioned on the aspects of your thread.
It’s open to debate and questioning.

At first i wasn’t going to point this out because i just thought
hey little mistake doesn’t mean anything

(They physically cannot excessive due to their weight.)

But then i saw this

(along with at least an hour of vigorous excessive a day.)

Now excuse me if english is not your native language
or for some reasons the mods decided to filter exercise to excessive

anywho the reason a person’s body produces excess fat is because their body
is taking in more nutrients than it needs
Meaning THEY’RE EATING TOO MUCH!
or they’re eating foods that they’re body can’t properly metabolize
either way
by all means it’s the persons fault that they’re fat
no amount of genes or debilitating disease can account for that
our bodies aren’t designed that way

and by no means is your hunger so overpowering that you can’t control yourself
Unless you have prader willies you can’t use that excuse

anywho back on topic bariatric surgery is a bad decision
it’s unhealthy, costly and can have bad side effects
Your body can no longer break down foods as well you have to take regular supplements
and plus the rate of weight loss it causes itself is unheathly.

still though..
your use of vocabulary and the fact that you’re posting this on a video game website instead of a medical forum makes me wonder..

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. This post is so filled with misinformation and ignorance that you might as well just toss out the whole thing and start over.
