Ok, I know that sounded really, really bad. But, where would we be WITHOUT the second world war? Probably without rockets, nuclear power, or space power. Possibly without computers. Without NATO, and probably without many other benefits it has given modern society. We wouldn’t have jet engines either, or many of the modern military tactical arsenal. So, was WW2 worth it? Blood for Tech, like every other war? Humanity advances through competition, social evolution. But was the second world war worth the cost in modern technology?

Touché.
Would that outweigh the gain though?

Give me a break. Do you really think, that we wouldn’t have invented all this stuff without war?

I don’t know… inventing Israel without the Jews getting killed in Holocaust and having Europe feel bad for them…

It’s true that (as warfare does in general) it led to an acceleration of scientific advances… to closer international ties which reduced the potential for conflict… to a whole lot of independence-granting by European powers to their now former colonies. It also hammered the living daylights out of a lot of major military powers, setting the scene for a long period which to this day has lacked major conflict. The ‘West’ today is, whatever you think of Iraq and Afghanistan, extremely soft when it comes to warfare, loss of life and general fighting, and that’s also a legacy of WWII.
So yes, you could say ‘good’ came from it.
But I’d still regard it as a horrifically bad thing. The technology would have come along anyway, and loss of tens of millions of lives can’t be balanced against it.

i think the few million lives were easily worth the advancements that came from the war and japan and germany are clearly better off now

Germany, before the war, was a superpower. I’m not sure if you know how small Germany is, but it managed to hold off pretty much the entire world. And they didn’t even enter war time mobilization until after the disaster at Stalingrad. However, Japan is definitely better off, as they had been (well, sort of) brain-washed with the whole Emperor thing.
We did achieve a very long peace afterward, as all sides had the stuffing beaten out of themselves. That was good.
And the technological achievements were incredible. The German scientific community made major leaps in technology. The only major improvements the Allies made were hydraulic brakes and really good radios.
Probably not offset by over 20 million deaths, but the peace that went on (relative) was pretty nice. After the big war, (for you players of Civ games) there’s always a peace. Then another really big war. Very realistic game, within limits.

Proof, for both of your arguments.

The whole world would be conquered right now without U.S.A’s atom bomb. Japan had the best weapon in the world and too many suicide jets. Thats why they conquered china and korea and about to conquer america.

Japan didn’t have any jets to speak of. Might I ask please, where you are getting your ‘information’ from?

ok first off people litterally disbelieve Hitler and the halocaust happened that and over 5 million people including gypsies, jews, homosexuals, etc. were killed and if you take the fact we are the only country to use the A bomb then you have the reasons why it’s bad.

It might have taken us many more years, but there’s nothing to suggest that warfare advancement is the only way to get leaps and bounds.
Totally not this.

I’d not trade 5mil+ of people (which was a lot back then considering the global pop), for what we got out of the war.
But still, the war was… productive. Guess that’s the word I would use.

i think if i killed you, harvested your organs, and donated them for transplants for 8 people that needed them or they would die, it would be worth it
See, I can be utilitarian too!

Farming, try to take Slogsdon’s argument a little less literally. They’re posting a collorary to your argument that causing death in order to help is supposedly a good thing.
