Plot Twist: The commentary specifies that upgrades are the problem and your attention is shifted to them, Meanwhile it's actually the commentary that keeps people around.

Well yes, but it then goes to identify itself as the problem and removes it too. I do certainly see the irony though.

(Part2) realize that you aren't enjoying these time spent ingame. And that's something that occurs beyond this framework. You work on something that first appealed you, but now it's all about money. You're with someone that you loved, but now it's all about a built relationship. The lesson learnt is about the importance of updating your feelings about what's happening, balancing the initial expectations w the reality and, then, adjusting the former or changing the latter. Do you really want to work like this? Do you really love them? Do you really want to play such game for the achievements' sake?
It's not about what you do specifically. You can work for money, play for the achievements and such - it's about knowing what you're doing. Feeling that it has sense for you, that it's not some robotic living.
The answer, given by our caring demogorgon22, is already there: "you should always play for fun" – as obviously as it sounds, but as hard as it really is in fact. Thx for this anti-game!

But you know what? I actually have fun buying upgrades, or even clicking a square, but to keep enjoying clicking a square, I need upgrades! Then I have fun. And actually I guess I'm not the only one, seeing the popularity of idle games. Yeah, maybe we think we can of get an achievment doing so, maybe it's pointless, but it's fun! So as long as I have fun, I'm not wasting my time. So my advice: keep playing idle games guys! It's fun!! Don't get too philosophical about this. Waste your time, quit your job, you will have tons of virtual money to buy virtual upgrades! Yeah! I'm a winner!

Personally, I enjoy buying upgrades. It gives a feeling of progress. I love the feeling of reaching your imaginary destinations. I personally don't agree with the message this game communicates. I had a few hours to kill, and an interesting perspective to look through, and I figured I'd make the most of it.
