Under rating threshold (show) Not a designer myself, I just played the demo. After about ten tries I got a strategy. I timed myself and lasted 1 minute and 32 seconds :) My high score from it is 5312. I'd say that's good enough, I'm not going to put any more time in that that lol. Now, for that homework I'm procrastinating...

Under rating threshold (show) The actionscript code that you see in the preview code is actionscript 3, yes, but most of it is Flixel, Box2D, and Stencyl API. If you want to learn Stencyl AS3, then always preview your code, and visit http://api.stencyl.com/

Under rating threshold (show) I've followed your tut's to the letter (and they are awesome I might add), but for some reason when I collect the power up on my game I made, its also kills the Player. A little help? Thanks.

+ - !

(2)

Developer response from Abigayl

Be careful with your collision groups. You likely have the player set to die when it collides with any "actor", so if you have the power-up set to be an "actor", it will kill the player. A workaround is to make a new collision group for the power-up that will collide with the player so that you can avoid that issue entirely (similarly to how we handled bullets in 4).

May. 9, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) thanks for the response that was very helpful. One last thing I think you should let people know (most likely at the start of your platforming tutorial) is that when you import an actor's image you have to use gifs to make the white background not show up during gameplay. I was driving myself crazy trying to get rid of that white background until i came across a comment on one of your tutorials that said to use gifs instead of jpegs.

+ - !

(2)

Developer response from Abigayl

I actually use PNGs myself, but yes GIF works. Actually, even JPEGs work if you use the "set transparent color" in Stencyl (not a recommended route, but it works). Good idea to mention it in the next tutorial though (which should be starting up soon now... Mr. Goldfish: Reboot! is nearing completion).

May. 8, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) When you are setting up the Powerup actor for collisions you use a getter called the actor to put into the kill self code, but the getter the actor isn't there anymore in Stencyl 2.0 so I was wondering what do we use to replace the kill the actor code.

+ - !

(2)

Developer response from Abigayl

The getter is in the loop itself. Just drag the pinky-red part into the code instead :).

Under rating threshold (show) joeyb130's comment about winning strategy forced me to try and find one myself, well, it actually worked out and I improved my hi-score from around 1600 to 4070! Interesting though, as I started looking for efficient ways to survive only after being informed that they exist at all ) Well, my intentions initially were to just listen to that goddamn soundtrack while actually playing the game ) Overall, very nice work, Abigayl! Keep it up. We should get much more of such stuff here and all over the net.

Under rating threshold (show) Dont know why but the powerup I created (when gravity is applied) falls through the ground, and when it is not applied floats and doesnt detect player collision. (i'm using the powerup code on a platformer in 2.2)

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

I would have to see the game itself to make sure, but are you sure that you are just disabling gravity and not all physics? Also, check your actor groups to make sure the powerup's group collides with the player.

Under rating threshold (show) Ok I know how to add music to my game, but when I try to post it here on Kongregate... no dice. What do I do?

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

What's the issue? Is the music not coming up on Kongregate but is playing when you do it from Stencyl? If that is the issue, there is likely some coding that is getting mixed up by being online. Try to test the game on Stencyl.com and see if it works from there. I do not know what the exact problem would be though.

Under rating threshold (show) Hey, I've been going through all of your tutorials and they've been really great. Of course Stencyl 2.0 came out and so the interface and alot of what many blocks are called has changed. I've tried to follow your tutorials as exactly as possible while at the same time trying to improvise with these changes. After finishing this tutorial everything seems to work except that when my player hits the power up it kills everything including my player and resets the game. Because I can't follow the tutorial exactly I'm not sure if you'll be able to help me or not but if you have any thoughts about it I would love to hear them.

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

If you could send me a screenshot of the coding you used, I can try to figure out the issue. Or, you could upload the game to Forge (make it public) and tell me the name and let me deal with the issue personally. Or, you could come to the livestream (livestream.com/poweredbyflowers), and if I am on, will try to help one-on-one :)

Under rating threshold (show) After running through your first tutorial earlier, I couldn't resist the temptation to do them all in the same day. I'll say it again: they're very well thought out and well written. Good job! I particularly liked the Messaging example (i'd seen messages in some of the behaviours from the Forge and expected it to be more complicated, but to find out that they're simply methods was a real "aha!" moment) and the powerup one (I didn't know what "is sensor" meant until now). I agree about comparing the block code to the real code underneath. I'm creating an iOS game and have actually come from a (beginner's) Objective-C background using the Sparrow framework - which actually powers the iPhone code in Stencyl - so it's interesting to see what's going on behind the scenes. Thank you again for these tutorials, much appreciated=)

I'm glad that they have helped you out so much :). It does seem like people like the messaging tutorial the best. If you ever need extra help, let me know :)

Under rating threshold (show) Finally got through with this. I gotta say..truely the best tutorial series i've ever used. No tutorial i've tried using for Gamemaker 8 was this easy to understand. Stencyl takes some of the credit too for it's method of coding in Design Mode. I think i've learned enough to attempt SOMETHING now (that isn't "Actor/Bullet Hell"...lol) On a side note, i decided to do a nifty sprite animation of my "bomb" powerup. :3 I suppose now the only problem ill have is making my own music/sounds for the game. I would rather not use stuff in my MP3 collection (that'd cause problems..of the copyright variety). And figuring how to code any gameplay ideas i have... TO ADVENUTREEEEEE!!! \o/ and programming..

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

Aye, at this point, the idea is to have enough of a grasp of Stencyl to go forward on your own in creating games. Of course, if you need help, can always ask :). Good luck to you! I look forward to seeing the "D" by your name.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Try adding in "if not scene is transitioning" into the collision coding and placing the code you have into that. That way, it will only try to do the coding once instead of many time as the scene fades out (you can see what I mean in the second tutorial set, such as about 2/3 through Set 2, Tutorial 3).

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Yeah, that's on every Stencyl game (one way you can tell if a game is made with Stencyl or not). I actually use it to my advantage in The Lonely Square to make an easter egg ;).

Under rating threshold (show) GLITCHES TO FIX: 1. If you pause the game at the end and hit 2 again and again, the music will overlay itself until you die. 2. If you pause the game and hit 0 or 1, the character will stay on screen throughout the tutorial until you unpause the game. Just thought I'd mention them.

+ - !

I guess I should have added "if not <scene is paused>"... unfortunately I lost the core files in a computer crash so I can't fix those issues :(.

Feb. 3, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) I agree that our solutions are basically the same (making 4 invisible lines around the edges). I just wanted to show that it's possible to achieve this without using behaviors at all. Making actors die when they collide with terrain would also be using behaviors. Anyway, great tutorial, as always.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Ah, didn't realize that would be a behavior-less method... will have to look into it more.

avatar for Potegaman
Potegaman

Feb. 2, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) It looks like it's possible after all. Playing with terrain some more, I came to believe that it's considered a member of "tiles" collision group. So if you disable collisions between enemies/bullets and tiles, they go through terrain, while it still blocks your player (if you leave collision between player and tiles on).

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Or have bullets/enemies die upon collision too ;). The idea doesn't seem much different than using the thin actors to wall the edges. Still, it's nice to have alternatives. Thanks :)

avatar for Potegaman

Feb. 2, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) Another simple trick for edge detection is usign terrain in scene editor. Just make 4 "lines" (terrain boxes with 1 pixel width/heigth), one for each edge. I tried it and it works perfectly. It's just a little tricky, because you have to "pixel hunt" with your cursor. But it shows the current location of your cursor in the lower right part of the screen, so it's not that hard.
