I've played this to death now and noticed a few things, hope this helps:
Keep a slow pace! The platform 'spawns' are calculated based on your speed - meaning there will never be a platform that is unreachable at your current speed. Obviously if you hit a crate after the platform has spawned there's a chance you won't have the pace to make it but by keeping a low pace all the time you reduce that risk significantly. Crates near the start of a building give you a good chance to build speed back up before the next jump anyway, so hit them when possible - just avoid double crates.
Don't jump further than you need to! If you aim to land on the first few centimetres of each platform you make windows and falling grinders much less of a problem. Grinders seem to fall exactly in the middle of their platforms, so by landing early you have a better chance of getting over them and back to solid ground in time for your next jump.

Reasons I've died: - 5% Fell between the buildings.
- 3% Bomb fell on me.
- 4% Too fast.
- 4% Too slow.
- 84% Missed a window by a pixel.

A triumph of minimalist gameplay and visual design. There's a good reason why I keep coming back to play more Canabalt.

anyone else creeped out by the fact that the birds are just chilling on rooftops while all these mechas are doing their thing in the city?

In the distant future, aliens come to our planet, unseen. They started by slowly removing one bird species at a time. soon there was only one bird left. And soon they were replaced, replaced by what seemed to be a normal bird, but they were far from it. They were made to be the perfect spy. looking for humans. Soon the humans began to disappear and reappear... different, in just months there was but a single normal man left. And he knew it. He knew that they knew he knew their secret. And so it began, they hunt for the last human. the birds keeping watch over him, telling the aliens were to shoot the bombs. The aliens in their HUGE machines tearing the very earth apart looking for him! All he could do is run and so here you are, the last run of your life...... Good luck.

"Hey, the worlds about to get blown up by aliens, and we should probably get going, but I've got this easy bake oven and I don't know what to do with it." "Oh, just put it on the roof, no ones going to be up there anyway."

Remember: if you GET A HIGH SCORE on Canabalt, be sure to PLAY AT LEAST ONE MORE TIME before you leave the webpage. Apparently the game only saves a high score once you've started another game, so if you just quit immediately after dying, then the high score you just made will be lost. This happened to me a couple times already. Of course, daily and weekly scores reset at the end of the day or the week, so unless you get an all time high your score won't last very long anyway.

I finally succeeded in getting the hard badge, with 7000 meters, but now that I stopped, my screen has started moving left to right in my eye :D

(POSSIBLE) TEMPORARY FIX FOR JUMP GLITCH (Firefox tested only): Bear with me here. When you see your character's framerate starting to look static-y, right click on the Flash screen to open the pop-up menu - but do NOT click into it. While the game is "paused" without actually being paused, click on the "+" button to open a new tab. Once the new tab is open, go back to the game tab by clicking on the tab itself on the top of the browser - your game should now actually be paused. Click back into the Flash game screen, and it should somehow stabilize the game. Worked three times in a row, got my 2K on the second try once I was actually able to jump.
Please note I am merely trying to help the group of us who cannot get this game to function properly. I still believe the programmers need to look at this to find out what is going on, but at least this will allow people to get their badge if they can actually get to 2K within the intended mechanics of the game.
