Under rating threshold (show) Great game, but two complaints: 1. Give me a better visibility for my ship, I can't dodge all the bullets in this item/bullets/enemies/explosion rain. 2. When I mute the sound, I want every sound muted. But there are still some sound effects lefts that play even if muted the sound (mute music works, though). Otherwise, good game. 4/5

yeah I was aware of the 'low visiblity' problem when there's lots of smoke and explosions firing off - I tried to strike a balance between looking like all hell is breaking loose and still being playable, I'll have to work harder on that next time! I'll look into the sfx mute issue...if possible if you could PM me and let me know which sfx are still playing and when then that would be a great help.

Under rating threshold (show) Well... nice flashy game except... since 5th level I started pointlessly move my mouse midlevel, 'caus I could see nothing but explosions, smoke, and stuff. I had difficulties distingushing bullets from coins, but that's minor stuff

Under rating threshold (show) What I would have liked is the ability to also buy extra lives, cause otherwise if you need them you have to replay levels which could get repetitive if they dont want to drop, or worse you could end up losing lives instead. otherwise, very good game :D

Under rating threshold (show) Greatness ! Balanced between action and chaos :) Reminds me of Dodonpachi. However, there is just a little trouble : Why are the upgrades and levels reseted when you finish the game ? The main menu gives a reset option, so I assumed it to be player initiated.

Under rating threshold (show) You want an awesome front page game? Get rid of the motion blur on kills, the smoke trail on missiles, and then add a final upgrade on weapons so the player can change angle. Boom, Achievements.

I thought about it - I wanted it - but then I got fixated on the idea that your ship should look 'different' when you upgrade the armor, I didn't have the time to design multiple ship sprites so I dropped the whole idea....maybe I shouldn't have, but I'll definitely get it into the threequel.

Under rating threshold (show) I felt like the upgrades were not balanced. I could full upgrade a gun within 2 play throughs of the first lvl, others took more play throughs just to get 1, but overall they were all incredibly easy to get. I felt there should have been more levels to each upgrade or more upgrades overall.

Under rating threshold (show) Nice start. It needs a few changes like a larger screen (or smaller ships) to make the game less clustered : you're stuck with all ships and just have to stay in the center, dodging a few shots.. With a larger area, you have more options to move, search for one enemy squad, drops, using movespeed efficiently ; would be the first step, the primary point to change as it'd allow to include more content to the game after that. Then adding some new weapons else than those basics, some you can't use together and have to switch or something. Some more achievments are always pleasant, espescially if they give some rewards. Now the hard part : you need that little idea that make the game different from all other shooters ! That thing in gameplay or weapons, sometimes really simple but never seen before.. Not a must, but it defines the greater games players will never forget and refer to when it gets popular :) Anyway I enjoyed playing this and hope you'll make another even better ;)

you make a lot of good points. I really would have liked to make the play area bigger - it's only as small as it is 'cuz I wanted to reduce the amount of lag - I might try other optimisations in future so I can retain the larger screen.. I'll also definitely make the ship smaller which should at least make the screen 'feel' bigger.

Under rating threshold (show) Really nice, old school game but you should consider making the ship more visible through reduction of some graphic explosions (unfortunately because they are good) or add more enhancements for the ship to make it tougher.

yeah lots have people have mentioned this and there is a lot of parameters I can tweak to reduce the amount of fx spawned by exploding enemies so I'll take that into account when I make the next one.

Under rating threshold (show) My biggest problem with the game is that max upgrades seem to matter very little in the higher levels. The magnet has the worst problems where even the top version requires you to be pretty close to the items in order to pick them up, leading to a lot of damage just to get stuff.

my thoughts exactly ;) ..... I don't think it's possible for there to be too many retro space-shooters available free-to-play on the web. I'm always trying to find interesting angles on old ideas but in the end if I can just make a fun update of space-invaders then I'm pretty happy with that, (where the operative word is 'fun').

Under rating threshold (show) It seems to me that the hitbox is a bit big compared to other games in the genre. By level 7 or 8 or so, during the frequent bouts of really heavy fire I have a hard time avoiding bullets even if I see them and want to.

Under rating threshold (show) Upgrades. I like upgrades, no question here. It's just that upgrades here make almost no sense. One upgrade for each direction, firing/movement speed, rockets, shields, all cool.But if you can max out all guns almost immediately, and it doesn't make much difference, it's as if there weren't any upgrades at all. Magnet maximum range is also too small. With bullet hell you often get stuck in one place, and often have no way out without hurting your ship due to lack of spread shot.

Under rating threshold (show) When I play this game I find Im not even trying cecause I only use one hand.Even though being amongst so much laser fried star fodder I often think of otherd playing and think to myself for those about to shmup I salute you.Most days I just cant stop til I killed em all including ET and his friggin diamonds.Even through the mists of pixel fog war I can see the bugs crying but dont get upset cos the only good alien is a dead one and even though here at the edge of time amongst the carnage of war my dreams are of extreme alien photon terrors on the starfields of nephilim .Do these monsters sleep and do they dream of green sheep.

Under rating threshold (show) I rarely go back to a game unless I like it, and this game keeps me playing until I've finished everything which is a very good sign =) I changed my initial 3/5 to 4/5 because of how fun this classic shooter is. The only negative thing I find is that when it gets hectic, it becomes hard to see anything, which makes dodging very difficult.

Under rating threshold (show) Great game in terms of look and feel, but if you run your mouse outside of the flash movie area your ship will change directions and move fast in the wrong direction. I would suggest that if the mouse gets moved out of the play area the ship either stops moving or moves towards the spot the mouse disappeared not the top right corner.

I did think about something like that - I didn't do it 'cuz I've tried it in previous games and it's surprisingly hard to estimate exactly where the mouse pointer exited the window, (think about when you're moving the mouse really fast and so it jumps many pixels per-frame). I'm not saying it's impossible, but I havn't yet found a foolproof method....An alternative solution someone suggested would be just to add a border around the whole game...a third solution might be that adobe add flash-player support for windowed mouse-capture.....I'll try some/all of those solutions next time around.

thanks for the vote of confidence... all the artwork is entirely procedural and I had to write custom software to help me generate it... it's not the normal way to make gfx for a game like this and I was a bit worried about the results so I'm really pleased you liked it!

originally the magnet was a lot stronger - you could suck stuff in really fast from right across the screen - I changed that for 2 reasons: firstly 'cuz it often looked like the treasure was 'attacking' you and secondly 'cuz I wanted there to be a challenge in collecting everything even with full magnetism.... having said that I may have made the wrong call on this one and I'll reconsider stronger magnets when I get around to another version.

Under rating threshold (show) Production values were great. The smoke on missiles and their explosions was very well done. The bullet hell was too dense and hard to see through. All the blur effects along with dead enemies blurring offscreen toward the bottom made the game screen just a mass of junk - which is unfortunate since the art and effects I could see were excellent. Advice: make the game field bigger, all enemies and the player ship smaller, and for cripes' sake knock it off with all the blur.

I agree I did probably go a little over the top with blur etc. I got over excited about the code I'd written and wanted to show it off as much as possible. When I get around to doing the threequel I'll tone it down a bit....and yeah a larger screen would be nice - I only kept it so small to minimise lag - next time it'll be bigger.

ok, I'll bear that in mind: I'll definitely do another one at some point cuz I really like these kinda games and I love the name "Starmageddon", so I'd like to keep going and see how far I can take it...but probably not for a little while 'cuz I need to work on some other stuff first before I can approach the next version with the necessary enthusiasm.
