I really like this toturial of yours, but how can I make the player move diagnolly when I press up and left or down and right, etc?
I believe that's covered in part 2 (might be part 3 though). You can find links for the rest of the tutorials (as well as notes as to what are the differences between what is shown and the current version of Stencyl) in the "News" section.

Hey im haveing a Problem When I Reached the part that Said Collision Groups I Didn't Find it in Stencyl And i didn't Even find the game Settings

What I Mean is Like for much Gravity and the coding for like player to move left and right and jump. your Tutorial 4: Shooting & HP i can not understand it um is the tutorial out of date for the shooting & HP?.
In the "News" section (which is unfortunately now hidden instead of easy to find), you can find all of my updates. One section covers the differences between this series and the latest Stencyl versions. The others are links to more tutorials, including a second set based on the current version, which directly covers how to make a platformer.

small question, when I edit for my character to "cannot be pushed" and it doesn't collides with it's bullet, but the bullet keep push the character away...
Check to see if the bullet is "cannot be moved". If so, that trumps "cannot be moved". Else, send me a PM and I might answer sooner than a few months later this time ;). (I rarely check these comments; there is no notification system)

Thank you so much for the time invested in these tutorials, i never leave comments but felt you were really owed a Thank you.

I just finished the tutorial. It looked intimidating at first, but it did not take that long. I learned a lot. But you make coding fun and easy to understand. Time to move on to the next tutorial.
Coding itself seems intimidating at first (and learning new coding even after you know some code is still intimidating... at least for me). I'm glad I was able to simplify it to an accessible level though :).

Hi Abigail, thanks for creating this useful tutorial. However it's time to bite the bullet and update it for Stencyl 3.2. I've been mucking around now for 2 hours with the collisions because they look nothing like Stencyl 1.0. As the only complicated thing in this tutorial is the collision and fade in, then it's worth ensuring this piece is working. Again, a very sincere thanks for all the effort u put in.
Check out my games page (kongregate.com/games/abigayl) to see the updates. Instead of remaking the first series, I made an entire second series (and a completely interactive 3.x tutorial as well).
The amount that they spawn is based on the time loop. In the tutorial, I suggest "do every 0.1 seconds", but if you want to lower the amount, increase the time between spawning. For example to spawn half as fast, use 0.2 to double the time between spawns.

Abigayl, really, you are the best, i looked all over internet to find Stencyl Tutorials, and you created one, thanks (:
Well, i made 3 times the tutorial and the game is correct, but there are only two enemies that go out the screen, then no other enemie appears, help me. Thanks
Make sure you are using a "do every" loop instead of a "do after" delay. That's a common mistake. If you want, upload the game to Forge, make it public, and let me know the name, and I'll take a look at it for you.
Yep. Once you start to learn the basics and really understand them, things get easier. In under a year of dedication, I have become what I am today. But, it does take perserverence and a dedication to doing a good job. Good luck to you if you decide to start up too :)

The only Stencyl problem is that all games save in .stencyl format, which Kongregate doesn't read as a SWF. When I edited it to .swf, the game went just blank screen. Anyone knows how to fix it?
You have to use the publish menu instead. "Export game" means you want to save all of the inner-workings of the file (i.e. to work on it on another computer). "Publish game" means make the SWF file for places like Kongregate :).

Your tutorials are amazing!
I made this while going through them:

I finished the tutorial but when i test the game, my person can just push around the enemy and does not die , any idea what has gone wrong ?
Any help would be appreciated :)

wow, i thought it would be a lot more complecated than that, expect a game from me within the year (gonna make a collect and avoid game with a nice background and health) and i will be sure to mention you and your tutorials in the description as you helped me a lot
It can get more complicated (see my advanced tutorial), but Stencyl does a lot to help keep things simple. If you run into questions or issues, feel free to stop by my livestream. For making games, I suggest starting off simple. In fact, today begins the GITD contest (see the programming forums), which could provide an excellent starting place for you before diving into a year-long game. Either way, good luck :)

THanks for the tutorial, this was very helpful. Funny story, I did this tutorial and thought, "Maybe 8-directional movement would be better." So I tried to code it simply but it would not work. So I went on stencyl to download someone elses 8-directional code, and it was so complex and I stared at it, dumbfounded, thinking to myself, "How is adding diagonal directions in a game so confusing?"

i would like to point out that stencylworks has its own version of paint (pencyl) built in. it is nearly exactly the same as paint and saves the trouble of uploading and so forth, all you need to do to open it is click "create (or edit) frame external" on the animations page, i find this is much easier
I use Paint.NET. It's a free, powerful tool, but it only works on Windows. There's also GIMP and some other free graphics tools. Those are the two though I would recommend (Paint.NET for Windows users, GIMP for others).

This is really helpful, I was overwhelmed by the coding screen when I tried to make a game, but now it makes a lot more sense. As a side note, if you drew the instructor person, you are also a very talented artist.
I'm glad it helped out :). The instructor is actually the rough draft of my avatar, which the very talented ilolamai drew for me: http://ilolamai.deviantart.com/

Just ran through your tutorial. Nice job! The coding had me a bit worried, but you mastered it wonderfully. Thanks! I look forward to your next 4 tutorials. I plan on making a side scroller woth this program, so we'll see.

i was just shown Stencyl when i voiced my irritation trying to work with Gamemaker and coding. I'm liking it..and these tutorials should prove helpful. Once i get through them maybe ill figure out how to go about making an RPG or some other game ideas i have. ^_^
RPG games are very tough to do for your first Stencyl game. I would advise focusing on something smaller first to learn the ropes. Perhaps to a simple turn-based combat game that could develop into an RPG later ;)
I have tried Scratch myself as I had to tutor a student in it (I am a tutor IRL). While Scratch has some benefits (the color-based collision coding is sharp once one learns how to do it), it has nowhere near the power of Stencyl (see my previous response to Nekuray).

PLEASE HELP! I have ''tested'' your game and it's scaling with window to fit it... I have troubles with this on my own game (not public posted) and I want you to tell me how you do it... I have tried nearly anything possible but nothing helped... if I change to ''start in full screen mode'' nothing appears (just black after it's loaded), otherwise it's not scaled currently. PLEASE, help me to solve this problem!
I did not use the scaling options for this game. In fact, I have not used any scaling in my games like that. If it's just black, it might be that another code is stopping the game from loading. Are there error messages in your logs? Also, you can likely find quicker support in the Stencyl forums: http://community.stencyl.com/index.php
In Stencyl 3.x, you can add a collision event instead and pick actor with group and go from there. I also have a more updated series for 2.x (which is much more similar to 3.x than 1.x): kongregate.com/games/Abigayl

I never would have thought a 12 year old could make a simple shooter from scratch. 5/5! Please make more advance tutorials like this one!
