What is interesting is you can test, (strategies) like using only snipers with common foot soldiers & double speed. It works!

"General, we are half way into the battle field, there is gas, mines, machine gunners, and hell up ahead, should we turn back?" "NO, YOU WILL GETS UR BUTTS ACROSS THE BATTLE FIELD, AND SHOVE THOSE GERMANS BACK TO WHERE THE WHERE, NOWHERE!" "SIR YES SIR" *army dies, looks down upon general as they ascend to heaven* "Damn... I knew I should've told them to retreat..."

I actually liked this more than the sequel for the first eight missions, but the ninth one rides hard into AI-is-a-cheating-bastard territory. The awkwardness of the morale system isn't so noticeable until then. You can be inches from winning, but your men will surrender for essentially no reason while the Germans seem impervious to any sort of discouragement whatsoever. Destroy all of their tanks you want; they won't care. Lose one of yours, and your men just start crying and throw in the towel right there. I'm fine with that. War is hell. The first world war absolutely devastated everyone involved. But come on, man, it should work both ways, here.

*my tank is destroyed* morale drops by 50% *Two german tanks go down* german morale drops by 10%

This game does a very good job of showing the ruthless calculus of war. All those soldiers that you just deployed to the frontlines, their lives are now expendable. Need to make room for a trench? No problem! Just kick one unit out so they can go forth to be ripped to shreds by German bullets and artillery. In war, the precious life of a soldier is in his/her commander's hands, and their lives are nothing more than a means to an end.

Enemy just surrendered on level 5 because they sent 3 infantry units out of a trench and they all immediately died to their own mortar hit... possibly the funniest thing I've seen this week

Heads up, if you pause the game while mortar (and possibly artillery) is being fired it will continue and it's still lethal.

Edit: once you unlock tanks, bring those out first (1 unit at the start). If you bring out anything else before the tank, its spawn time will delay. I like to bring out the tank then the machinegunners and then assault units. Officers/snipers are not as useful.

Here is a major tip for mid-to-late games: always bring out your Machinegunners first--they are the most effective trench units. You want to establish a defensive line first, so get as many machinegun units (I usually call in 2 at the start) as you can. Then start calling in your assault units to take on enemy trenches. When your artillery, mortars, and gas are ready, concentrate them on the most populated trenches and try to rush your units to overwhelm the enemy. Don't invest in snipers--use assault instead, they are better vs. trenches. Hope this helps.

Not one enemy on the battlefield, I have a tank about to reach the enemy zone, I have three sets of troops in each trench and then they gave up?
