very deep story.. and amazing music.. very emotional. however wrote this deserves a medal.. and some cake.. after finishing the game, it made me feel all squishy inside, in a good way htough.. i would love to be able to see your "Letters from beyond the rainbow".. this is truly epic.. easily a 5/5.. and also if you drew those pictures, they're very good.. perhaps a link to the music would be nice. i love the smooth calm feel to the song.. as if the wind was blowing.. in my heart.. ^.^ i look forward to your future works whether they be games or novels because the story you wrote is amazing.
Hey!
There's a link to the whole soundtrack in the game description ;)
And actually, the chapter 4 and menu music is called When the Wind Blows, so you weren't wrong at all!

I have a big appreciation for games like this. My friend and I often design games like point and click games on paper (puzzle adventures). To see one on an actual game sight is cool. Good job!
Ahh no, sorry, just the one! No sequels, ever, that was what I had decided when I first started the game. I want the game to feel like a real adventure, not like most other, 'casual' games that can have countless sequels.

It's so great to see all this wonderful comments! Sice I ddiscovered Kongregate 4 years ago I wanted to publish a game here, and when we finally made The Gray Rainbow I was anxious of the reception we'd receive on Kongregate. You guys made me feel great! Thank you very very much!

I set only a Hand full of Games to my Favourites, but THIS Game, even though it should be played once, deserved to get faved. It was a deep game with the perfect Message at the best time. I started to get a little bit depressive over here in Germany. We still got Snow and everything is just white, grey(clouds) and black(people dressed all the same). It just feels like the beginning of this Game. That story really touched me. 5/5 and faved.

Hmm, that Hint Book is rather full of itself. "I am a very smart book", indeed....... Oh wait, it actually DOES know everything, nevermind. Lol.

A hand-drawn game? Cool! :) I started to develop a hand-painted story game awhile ago myself....and never finished it :P My excuse is that i was using Stencyl XD

I don't get why rating is so low. It is simple in its beauty. This game deserves the first place in the monthly challenge. Seriously :) the story was really slow at the beginning, it was hard for me to get into the game and into the graphics, which are really particular, but that perfectly fit with the story, the characters and the message. I loved it as soon as it touched my heart, after speaking with mr tree :) The music seems as if there is a wind that slowly pushes the story towards something more and more deep that actually is much nearer to real life than anything else. I loved the ambience, loved the story, loved the funny characters. I would make a book or even a movie about this. :) 10/5. I would really appreciate a sequel or another story. Thanks for introducing us to this dream world!
Thank you for the very kind words.
I don't think there's ever going to be a sequel. This story is over. The world of The Grey Rainbow is still alive and out there somewhere, with all its adventures and secrets and dangers. But it is not our story anymore.
I do, however, have an idea for a very short (written) story titled "Letters from Beyond the Rainbow". But only if a lot of people ask for it (and I mean a LOT. Like, a million game views, or several hundred emails and pms ;)

Teal3x stick your silly religious nonsense where the sun doesn't shine. You were rated down because this is a game site and not a religious forum. Preach elsewhere.

Lol, what can I say... 3 minutes, and I reached the rating treshold. I wish a neverending happy relationship for anyone not voting me down, and depression pills for the rest.

Your message: "Forget it, don't fight. Life finds a way."
You were trying hard, and I appreciate that, and your sense of importance on conversation.
I was trying hard too, it took me 3 days to play through the game (mentally).
Nevertheless, quoting one of my latest comments:
these things are ok and things are not ok (fail) for me:
1 getting no girl: fail 2 not getting a specific girl: ok 3 losing a girl after she is yours: fail.
You know, it is lent now, and while it is true, that life always finds a way,
it is true too, that Jesus was tempted by the Devil 3 times, and I am thinking about the third one now.
It can be a perfectly valid situation that your heart tells "no" to the third temptation of the Devil.
It is something that is hard to talk about correctly.

Loved the game, and the references to literature were a nice touch. It even made me shed a few tears. One of the best point-and-click games I've played here.
I wouldn't know. Never read it. I remember seeing the movie, but also remember disliking it; even though the message was nice, it felt too sloppily done and had a terrible soundtrack.

nice game..the only thing is that reading the conversations takes a big deal of time...which is quite boring..otherwise its a superb game..nice story and adventure....4/5.well done uploader

5 stars all the way. Easy, but one of the most interesting and engrossing point and clicks I've played. It reminds me of "The Neverending Story" so much that I half expected to see Falkor flying by. I'm also glad the guy from A-ha's "Take on Me" video was able to find work as the detective. We demand more of this greatness.
Cats are awesome!

Oh my God... That was an experience. Over an hour spent on it, all worth it. :) Thank you so much for such a beautiful story.

huh...i apparently need to reach those berries with the staff but i mannaged to break the staff trying to move the slab...
Repair it in the white lake. "White is for mending"...
NOTE: As you are the second person who asked about this, I have uploaded a new version with a slightly changed hint that tells you exactly what to do with a broken staff.
Isn't it a black olive on a green background?
NOTE FROM DESIGNER: Yeah, in the splash screen I made a green olive for Black Olive Games. I thought it was funny, on so many levels ;)

Wow... what a beautiful game. Good mix of adventure, philosophy and humor. Good story-telling, lovely characters, very imaginative places and quests. Fitting music, even if it gets a little repetivive. The only point of criticizm (imho) are the graphics. While I really like the handdrawn style, the variying quality of the drawings was a little disturbing - some things were drawn very well and detailed while others looked a little poor and messy. Maybe you could put a little more effort in a consistent style of drawing... that would be awesome. You could use better outlines (stronger, a little darker) for example, variying in size and strength. I think that would fit to the crayons. Anyway, nice game, 5/5. I'd love to see more. :)
Oh... but next time you should make it PEGI18... that wizzard's brick was REALLY evil. So scary...

I gave it 5 stars although i wish that it wasn't this easy. I was expecting me to have to revisit older locations later on, i even wrote down what colors do, thinking i would have to use the colors later on, etc. The best area was the oasis for my taste (i mean because of the puzzle there).
Ah. It was my first adventure game; I just wanted people to enjoy the story, and puzzles that are easier to solve. I hadn't really had a good feel for puzzles in the beginning; I kept thinking they were too hard, so I made them easier. That's why, as the game progressed, the puzzles became better (we did the game sequentially - first the mountain, then the town, etc.), because I was getting more confident with the puzzles.
Note from the developer: ...and I was letting him do more bizarre puzzles as my framework evolved because at first I thought this would be a simple adventure game...but then if it was simple it wouldn't be fun :) So I made possible to add more different game mechanics which were used for clever puzzles!
