Hey guys/gals! Someone on NG asked some questions about the backstory of the world and the game. Nothing much, but I thought I should re-post my answers here for anyone interested.
"We know about the old man, but where did his friends go? Did they die in happytown with their families?"-His friends are all dead. I won't say how, why or when, though...
"What does the inside of the wizard's tower look like?"-At first there was supposed to be a scene inside the tower, but I cut it out early on, for pacing purposes. It was important for the puzzles to feel organic, instead of 'new screen-another puzzle'.
"Are there other towns?"-of course there are. Big and small. There used to be a colossal city in the desert with the phoenix, but now there are only ruins. There's a whole world out there. We see only one very small part of it.
"Did the dwarf ever manage to make something of himself?"-I don't know what he'll do next, but he definitely didn't, and won't, climb the mountain.
Cheers!

''A potion that makes you think you're funny, even though you're not.'' So THAT'S what my friends were drinking! Ahhh, it all becomes clear...

If u want to read the whole story here is the link http://www.blackolivegames.com/games/thegreyrainbow.pdf
, thought I recommend first playing the game to have a better understanding of what is going to happen

Okay, so I talk to the Tree of Death, and then I lose the ability to click? What the hell?
I've reloaded several times and it happens each time. I'm running Firefox on Windows, if that matters.
Hmm, this is the first time I've heard about this problem. What's weird is that there is no chapter change after the Tree, all you get is the seed in your inventory. Off the top of my head, you can try enabling all the cookies in you browser and maybe disabling max security (if you have it on) in your browser.

I got into certain aspects of this story - particularly the ones where the dialogue was shorter. Although I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks the story of this game isn't in proportion to the gameplay. It should balance out. :/ If I want to read a book, I have a few on my shelf I'd rather read.

I have to admit... Once i heard the Old Man's tale, after whe found the pool, i actually bec ame quite sad. Amazing, beatfull, sad history, i may wonder if it is from your life, or from someone you ever met.

I adore all the reasons it gives for why you can't combine two items, or cut a stick. Little things like that just make this an even better game.
I really like the Beavis and Butthead nod when you try to use something with the rainbow cage ;) And the one you get when you use something with the forest in the very first scene.

So... By the end of the story i could easily say this is one of my favorites and was very delightful and uplifting. 5/5 Hope to see more like this.

5 out of 5. I've been playing for 20 minutes and this is the best little adventure game I've played for a while. Also, whoever drew all of these things, gets an A+.

I finally figured out the new save file location for The Grey Rainbow! Take the usual route to get to the flash save data; on Mac that's:
~ / Library / Preferences / Macromedia / Flash Player / #Shared Objects / *Random* /
It will be slightly different on Windows.
Then, instead of going to chat.kongregate.com go to:
assets.kongregate.com / gamez / 0016 / 9748 / live / TheGrayRainbow.swf / and drop your old save file (grayRainbowProgres.sol) here. This part will be the same on Windows.

Quite lovely, a thoughtful and thought-provoking story. I think it says quite a bit about our society, how today so many people just want to be entertained, and don't take the time to really think about and enjoy what they're doing. Even the protagonist just wants to "get on" with his "dream", but his journey is about learning to appreciate life, not just living.

The music is heartwarming, it was interesting from the start, and though it may have given me amazing goosebumps, cursed here and there, been a little tough at times, and taken a little over two hours to read, it was definitely worth the experience. I believe this to be one of the most lesson-teaching thing I've read in over 4 or 5 years, and it'll have me thinking about it for the next month or so, affecting my choices, in a good, nay, WONDERFUL way. This game is worth the badge and so much more. I could go on, but there may be people reading the comments before reading this astounding webcomic, and suffice to say, i do NOT want to keep them waiting. May the Lord bless the creators, and my the ground quake as you pass. Thank you. ~Cc053

I keep having the mouse flutter between the white ingame and the standard mouse pointer for my computer... Is that normal?

I have no problem with text or reading, and a good story is a must. But there is way, wayyyy too much text. You spend 90% of the time reading blocks of it. It takes me out of the experience and just makes me want to keep clicking to get on with it. As for the game itself...the journal literally tells you what to do and where to go. Lastly the art. I know that was the style and it's supposed to be all hand drawn. I appreciate the work that went into it but...yea. Obviously lots of people like it and a lot of time went into this but..there's really nothing at all I like about this. That's just me and this will be down voted to oblivion anyways.

I found it quite difficult to enter this game but i'm glad i didn't actually give up because "cats are awesome and they need to eat", oh wait. Relaxing game, indeed. Thank you!

Just a note--the experience is a lot better with the game than with the story. I had originally read only the story because I was interested in the game as a moral concept, but I found that the story is more potent by far with images. Although I still disagree with the story's premise, I appreciate it much more now.
But the game is just a game, and the story just a story. I wasn't trying to make anything preachy or give a moral lesson (since there isn't one, in fact), I just wanted to make a game that makes people happy, that is relaxing to play and where you won't have to shoot something, choose who lives or who dies or get an adrenaline rush. I wanted to make a world that feels alive, one that is romanticized but still very much grounded in the natural order of things. In short, I wanted to make an adventure, something that makes you feel like you truly are on a journey.

I haven't played the game, but instead read the story--the story was...good, I'll say. I disagree with the message and premise of the game, but it is good for such ideas, through any medium, to be discussed. 5/5 because it shows thought.

"A book that talks about a nation of people who believe that all life is a dream." The Aiel from The Wheel of Time maybe?

@DennisM47, I actually like the drawing style. It feels kinda unrefined, which helps set the mood for the game. It has that feeling of the innocence of childhood, which the story is trying to re-inspire in us.
In the end, I loved this game. Nothing ground breaking, but a nice story with tasteful music and a warm fuzzy feeling to discover in the end.

Awesome game! Fun art, fun story, and fun to play.
However, I just gotta say one thing: a land of color tied to magic, where everybody has "Breath" with a capitol "B"? Has anyone else here read "Warbreaker"?
I understand Easter Eggs are fun and references a great if you catch them, but this is only a couple of steps from being able to be called "Warbreaker: the Flash Game".
Anyhoo, still a great game. 5/5.
It has absolutely no relation to Warbreaker! It's just a name for a kiss. EDIT: if I had called the kiss 'Essence' or somesuch, noone would mention Sanderson, but the game would still be the same.
