Since I beat the game with both endings I can give a more concise review. To be blunt, I freaking love this game. The controls are smooth, and easy to remember. The speed of the character is nice, not too fast or too slow. The graphics are bright and colorful, which is nice. Even in dark areas I know what I'm looking at. The music is something else, it adds emotion to scenes and areas. I've even had one track stuck in my head because I liked it so much. I want to give you a personal thank you for adding backtracking in. It's something I miss in platformers. I love being able to revisit levels that I liked, and having to problem solve.

Whoa, thanks for all the comments! I'm going to look over them and figure out what I need to start working on for version 1.7. :) The more feedback I get, the better I can make the game! So thanks for playing and giving me that valuable information.
The first priority is to deal with the "black screen" error that a number of you are reporting. This bug did not show up in initial testing, so I suspect it's something to do with the Kongregate version of this game. For those who sent me a bug report: THANK YOU! If you don't mind, I will be contacting you shortly with information on how you can help me test this further.

Very good game. To defeat the first boss lure him to the big bombs. For the last boss you must bounce his bombs onto him and then press down and c. Continue that. Ending 1=Don't put the gems into the machines and directly step onto the light-(Bad Ending) Ending 2= Put all the gems into the machines and then step into the light. (Good Ending) The locations of gems are in one of the best comments. Plz + so everyone can see

Better guide to the secret room (This requires the wings): Within “Worldly Ruminations” (the cave after “Alter Ego”), there is a door leading into “Ancestor Grounds”. Next to that door, there is a platform going upward. Follow that. Keep going and going until you reach the room full of spikes scattered on the ground with a brain in the middle with a hovering turret. To reassure you're in the right place, the memory collected talks about the kinship between machines and animals. There will be a platform slowly going back and forth. If you jump and just miss the ledge the brain is waiting on, you’ll hit the secret room.
There is no benefit or consequence for this room, but it’s fun to discover. For me, at least. :3

This game was awesome! It definitely brings the feeling of a true retro game and that is worth quite some praise. It doesn't feel too short like some games leave players feeling (I completed the first play-through in an hour and a half). The only things I would like to see is the ability to shoot spines in air and when you find secret areas, clear the foreground layer to show the "cave" you are moving through. What would also be cool is, taking from metroid, secret breakable walls. If you added that then more and more upgrades could be hidden or just fun facts.

people have been asking "what exactly are we controlling here?" well, my best guess is a pterodactylgreyhound thing with wings

I just finished the game. Wow. That was amazing. This and Endeavor, and all of those kind of games... WE NEED MORE OF THEM! The pixel art made my day, and the story was really good. The controls were a bit awkward and I wished we could attack while we jump(maybe make a force-field for the last boss while hes in the air), but the game was amazing. Smacked it onto my favorite list.

Good news! I've found the cause of the black screen bug. I will be releasing a fix today that will keep the bug from causing a black screen and completely ruining the game for some of you. To those who are getting the black screen: CONGRATULATIONS! You're totally sequence breaking my game. :D
There's a reason for that. Originally it wasn't a map. N for...NAVIGATION WAYPOINT. But now it's a map. Since this seemed to bug so many people, it's now M for MAP.
Oh yeah, and it's I for Status right now, since WASD controls conflict with that. ;)
Actually, it's now I for INVENTORY. Just in case that bugs anyone.

i miss these story-driven games, always better than the gameplay-driven games imo, and now they are all but extinct, no new ones are being made and that hurts.

I like how the speed of the quills you fire is directly related to the speed you're currently moving. It would be nice to fire while jumping, though.

ChainedLupine is a pretty sick developer cause he's actually listening to people's suggestions! Keep up the good work!

Loved it, I was ar first seeing just a normal game, but it quickly became more of a book for me, where my main focus wasn't upgraded (like I do in most platformers) but instead I focused greatly upon finding the memory tidbits, which helped moved the whole game along beautifully. Thanks for creating it, and kudos for doing it such a short manner of time!

Why is the realm always treacherous? I mean, isn't there a land of fluffy bunnies and unicorns who help you on your quest for the magical lollypop? But still, great game, 5/5.

Is the Jump magic Jump badge a reference to David Bowie's number in Jim Henson's Labyrinth? Love the inside references for badges.

Played Game. Completed 100%. Years later, plays again with achieves. Misses a couple things, but gets double jump. No Achieve. Ya Know, it still deserves the 5 stars.

The final boss is strange because it seems really hard but if you know what you are doing it becomes a cakewalk. First off if you haven't figured it out the goal is to tackle the bombs it throws back at it in order to ground it, and then when it is on the ground attack it with your spikes to actually damage it. (If you are having trouble hitting it with a bomb I found that jumping to hit the bombs in the air made it a lot easier, but use whatever works for you.) The cakewalk piece is that the first thing it will always do after taking to the sky is throw more bombs. With a bit of luck you don't have to see it fire a bullet other than waiting for the first bomb.

I found two "Fun facts". The first is after the double jump, take the elevator then when you'll see the bat go to the flying island next to the elevator. You'll see an egg. Then the second is outside the mountain. Just climb it and you'll find the egg on the top of the moutain in a hidden tunnel.

This game reminds me of when i was young, and we had to walk fifteen miles to the nearest games machine, uphill and in all weathers.

Hey, just popping in to say I think about this game every so often and was quite surprised and hopeful to see the creator still working on it, even on another platform!

here's a tip, once you unlock the double jump you can tank a hit on the wall to the left of the man+dog statue, land on the ledge during invincibility frames, and get to the top, which unlocks the dash. please upvote this if it's useful, ok?

Please note that in the end where it says get all the health packs, it really means it. >_> That boss is hard even when you figured out how to kill the thing. 11/10 though. Great game!

My fourth favorite game on Kongregate would have to be “Legend of Kalevala”. It has a “good” and a “bad” ending. There is an in game item called “Ancestor Records” that contains 18 different achievements that is fun trying to get, as well as the three from Kong. You can finish this game in under an hour, but much more fun to me if you really search things out. (hint: go for the “good” ending)

1.6.2 is live! This fixes the black screen crash. I've also added a new error catching screen in case this happens again. If you see it, please screenshot it and send me a bug report! (Be sure to add what you were doing at the time, too.)
Next version will be done by tomorrow, and will include some more bug fixes (all minor, non-game-crashy sorts) and re-tune some of the game play mechanics. In particular, the boss fight is too hard!

Brilliant. I wish there were more designers who actually care about video games as an art form like you do. The story was interesting, and I liked the atmosphere of slowly accumulating memories. I also liked how you explained how most of the powers worked, though I'm disappointed there's no explanation for double jumping. Ah well. The music was quite nice, though surprisingly fast-paced and upbeat in places. Suggestion: Record text from memories in case you want to see them? Perhaps in an additional sub-menu on the main menu. It would be also nice to have an easier way to backtrack at the point right before the final boss; it probably took me at least half and hour trying to get through the lava gauntlet backwards.
