ah, this is the very game that brought me to Kong 12 years ago. glad to see it still works here, so i can have some fun with archery :) never gets old.

Fun fact: a unit of Norman knights can completely wipe out any unprotected Viking unit with a single frontal charge, including Harold Hardrada.

Tips: Norman knights are fast but cowards. Always have 4-5 archers
FYI: It is funny that taunts do not always make sense like when you never taunt and the Normans call you 'foul-mouthed cur'... hello... whose taunting? Also try no archery on Stanford Bridge and Hasting and no knights on Hastings- that makes the story lie:)

Flash finally stoped working for me. It was fun while it lasted. All these memories that these simple but fun games helped us grow when we were young. Now it's gone. Sweet dreams my sweet prince.

Fun but sadistic way to play against the bot: mass Norman archers (5-6 units) on Stamford Bridge. Set up shield wall on chokepoint and let the archers do the killing for you. Works best against Vikings.

English soldiers: Literaly being decimated by viking warriors and quickly losing morale
Also English soldiers: "You oozing pus wound!"

Please make a sequel or keep up with this game, Ive been playing this game for over a decade and I would love to have this concept further on

One of the best free online games, I have been coming back and playing this game for over a decade now. Thank you, developers.

This needs badges, and more games with a similiar gameplay. this is the best and most unique strategy game I have ever played.

For people who have trouble with morale: keep an eye out for enemy unit's morale. If their morale is below 50% and is not in a formation, the AI will spam the taunt button as much as possible. For the units in formation under 50%, most of the time they won't taunt back.

JaiSh123, yeah, I am. In fact, I specifically wrote about that in my comment with archery tips. It's dependent on the game difficulty and the armies that are chosen. Letting arrows loose on English archers with strong defense in hard mode can be a pain, for example. What you've described surely can happen, but not in every situation, so I really don't know how you're getting those numbers unless you're always versing the Vikings in easy or medium (since their low defense will allow for more damage, but they also deal good damage themselves). Adding on, the power used in a shot doesn't affect the damage dealt either (or at least not very significantly). I may be mistaken with that, but that's just what I've observed.

TheFalseSwiss strange. It has always been the opposite for me. XD
I always expect to do 50-70 damage on several units of theirs, while they do no more than 50-60. Also, my archers always outlast the enemy's, and have more range than theirs. You sure you're shooting at 45 degrees at full power?

Follow up commentary about my "parade of death" method (might be in the see all comment section now). In Fulford and Stamford Bridge, line up your troops behind the natural impediments. The enemy won't be able to pass through the natural impediments but will seemingly just sit there. With six archer units all in a line, you can take out the enemy archers first and then the rest. Since the enemy won't be touching your units at all, you can get away from a battle without any deaths. Note that a shield wall might be sitting around as well. Take that out after the main line is taken out (including the king). Line up your archers with the enemy shield wall, and with their morale severely lowered, you should be able to take them about with only 1-4 volleys.

when your norman knights charge an enemy and wipe them out completley, all 500 dead in one move, it just feels kind of amazing

Archery Tips:
1) 45 degrees is about the maximum your archers can elevate their shots and still shoot further. Past that, their arrows will most likely fall short.
2) When the enemy is close (especially on flat terrain), it is better to shoot upwards in a parabolic/arching path. Trying to shoot with less power than the max is risky, although this is from my personal experience.
3) Practice shooting by setting up a large battle and lining up a bunch of archers. You'll be able to learn and remember the elevation and power needed to hit specific points.

I've found a very exploitable configuration: line up your archers, varangian/huscarl/men-at-arms, and the king. With this, the AI is tricked into lining up, allowing you to take easy shots at the enemy king and other troops with your archers. That being said, do not march the line forward; stay in one place, shoot, and fortify. I typically put the archers right behind a single unit of varangian/huscarl/men-at-arms and rotate that first rank whenever need be. Following up on my comment about archers, I've found that playing the Normans with this method is best; their overall balance allows them to make deadly shots at enemy archers and withstand some damage themselves. Obviously, take out the enemy archers first with this method. Using this "parade of death" method, I've been able to essentially break the game and achieve the "king" rank in nearly all battles.

The usefulness of archers is however, greatly diminished when the enemy manages to arrive at your army. Knights can do this in 2 turns. Other melee units might take 5 or so turns. Archers take a lot more than 5 turns to kill a squad. When the melee units arrive, combat can give casualties of perhaps 5:1 and charging/outflanking might give casualties of 10:1. Also, with too many archers, melee uniys will find it very easy to hunt down your king. Dead king = deserters

If there's one thing about this game that really grinds my gears, it's the sheer deadliness of enemy archers. From all I've observed, no matter what game mode you are in, they can expect to get 60 kills at the least when shooting at my own archers. You don't get those numbers anywhere else other than right out of easy mode, and even in easy mode, the enemy can still get these drastic kills. Not to mention that for some reason, they are able to shoot across the whole map with ease whereas my arrows drop before the last handful of squares.

Great game, one suggestion: In multiplayer, have an option to have two players play against each other on the same computer. They can take turns entering orders, and battle that way. That'd be awesome.

One of the better strategy games I've played, the artwork is simple yet intriguing, and the chance of armies fleeing really adds a challenge to committing to strategies, but I found this game very enjoyable, and gives insight to the battle of the hastings. Overall 10/10
