"Johnny 7823263, Let me tell you about something that happened long ago. There was once a Johnny 1, he lived for about two seconds too weak to move. Then he died. So then there was Johnny 2, he just randomly appeared out of nowhere, he shared the same lifespan as Johnny 1 but he could move. He moves toward a floating disk of gold. When he touched it it dissipated and he felt a sense of accomplishment. Then he died. Then there was Johnny 3, He could live for twice as long as the Johnnys who came before him. He live for four glorious seconds, picking up three majestic discs. For those four seconds he felt invincible. Then he died."
"So where are you going with all of this?"
"There were 7823262 Johnnies before you. And there will be thousand after you, goodbye my son"
*Johnny 7823263 explodes into bones and guts*

Hey, I've just killed the boss and saved the world. Now to retire and enjoy the remaining 25 seconds of my life to the fullest.

Hmm. I am an small human that is too weak to jump or even move. I have no weapons and a 2 second lifespan. What should i do with my life? I know, i will become a SUPERHERO!
Makes sense! :)

For those struggling with the boss: Dodge his first bullets. Then when canons rotate stand exactly below him to dodge those ones, too. When he stops shooting run away, cause he will drop to the ground. When he dropped you can shoot him exactly once, any more shots won't hurt him. Repeat four times and you won. Can be done easily without being hit even once, but you even have enough time to try to get to the boss with as many hearts as possible if you are unsure.

Lots of fun. Love the gameplay, love the style. I gave it 4/5 instead of 5/5 though, but only because the game was so short. You could add more levels and more abilities. Flying, swimming, magnetics, invisibility, bombs, upgrading aim like the ability to shoot up or down. There's lots of potential here for a whole series.

Great little game. I wanted to play more. I'd love to see some additions (more levels, more upgrade, achievements... anything really). The only problem I had was that the boss was really, really easy. It's just the same pattern a few times until you shoot him down. The only time I lost was when I ran out of time before I killed him.

FYI on boss - multiple hits do not work. Just look at his life bar (the vertical colorful bar on the top right). Basically just use 1 bullet each time he falls. + for others to know.

I have to say this game won me over and filled me with a great sense of nostalgia! Loved the art and whole lay out. It was a quick play (ie perfect for a flash game) and once I got over the very first death shock I was struck by the genius of it all. Defiantly a fav. I thought the 'pattern' style of boss fight was well done for the game as well. Would LOVE to see more!

This is what happens when you play too much COD and decide you can be a super soldier, so you slip on a random costume and leave your mother's basement, only realizing, too late, that your muscles have atrophied to the point movement outside is nearly impossible, and the sunlight has become so dangerous to you that you only have two seconds of life. Thankfully, you somehow have infinite lives to improve upon your initial attempt.

Good news! It isn't glitched if you use newgrounds' player: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/594891
Bad news is if you do this, you can't get the badge.

For those who are stuck on the boss, the boss is INVINCIBLE when its flying. Wait for it to fall down before attacking it. Also, try not to jump :)

Overall, I enjoyed the game. I like how the game progresses nicely. Although, the only thing that kept me from giving it a perfect score was the fact that the boss only had one attack pattern. You should have tried to make it a bit more difficult to dodge his shots, perhaps by adding a gun after every 25% health was gone. Something that would have made the fight less boring. Otherwise, solid 4/5 game.

Really cool game! I could see my self playing this for a very long time, but only if there were more levels and abilities... Different weapons, and more specials (like the double-jump) and some passive abilities like coin-magnet, monster repellant or others... 4/5 so far, but loads of potential for a 5/5 game!... Good job!

The boss is really easy once you understand that you can't attack him before he - by himself - gets down. After that it is just how much time you have.

What a miserable existence. Doomed to have your body torn apart by a mysterious explosion every 30 seconds..only to be born again, just to be blown apart again..for all eternity..how depressing.

All right folks, it's theory time. I'm gonna try and explain why what happens in Johnny Upgrade happens. Here goes: You never play as the original Johnny. The robot has found a way to cause the environment where the "level" is to cause people to lose every skill they have, and filled the air with poisonous gas that you can't last very long in. Johnny knew of this, and since he can't fight the robot himself, he has created an army of clones. Every upgrade you get is an upgrade for the clones; giving them the ability to keep their skills in the crazy environment. See, these upgrades are expensive, and being a superhero isn't a very high paying job. The actual Johnny is seen in the loading screen, the beginning when Johnny explains the whole upgrade thing, and the ending, where Johnny is seen flying away. The actual Johnny can fly, you see, but he can't seem to figure out how to get his clones to do so, although he did manage to give them a double jump. What do you think?

!!!TIPS FOR THE BOSS!!!
Stay under him, dodge his fire. When he starts spraying bullets, remain under him for protection. When he stops spraying he stomps the ground. That is the time for you to go next to him and shoot him while he's on the ground and while he's taking off. Repeat until he's dead. I finished with full health and 50 sec left, so no problem.
PRO TIP: shoot at the boss until he dies.

There better be a second part or something, iv'e got just a minute... =P
Really loveable game! 20 Johnnies out of 20!
(I could listen to the soundtrack as if it were some sort of popular pop song! XD)

This was wonderful! I love how if you figure out the shortcut you can save a lot of time, and you need all the upgrades to win. The boss felt very Zelda-like to me so I found it easy, but it was definitely challenging enough to make it worthwhile.
