It seems that the boy you play as is a dead one who exists only in the girl's memories. As first, the world is void of colour in the mind of the girl, who cannot let go because of her sadness. As you give her the things that she like, you give colour to her empty world. Once you help her let go of her sadness, and let go of your death, then she can finally be happy and live her life full of colour; grey no more.

This games needs their own category. This is not just a game, but a beautiful story and a piece of art. The music, the colors, the end fit perfectly to build a whole story in a so short game. Absolutely Brilliant, no doubt.

Based on LittleHat's explanation, I also see that this game represent life itself, from childhood to adulthood, from the items you collect left to right. Starting from the left, there were gifts of a red balloon, a pink ribbon, a purple lollipop, and a brown teddy bear. You would consider all of them gifts of affection to a child. The four-leaf clover encountered in the way represents luck as a sense of hope to not give up. As the game progresses to the right, he gives a blue bead necklace, a more of an adult gift to symbolize a chain of love. The last thing you encounter is a yellow flower next to a tombstone to represent love beyond death. By the time the girl realize what was happening, she took life for granted. What remains are mementos of the boy's love.

A great game that is full of sadness... The color fits and the music is perfect for this game
This short game may be short, but it brought kindness into my heart.

In the game I noticed how there were 7 colors, not the traditional 6 colors of the rainbow. My interpretation of the game is that each item you bring to the girl is one step in the 7 stages of grief, I think this because there is a gravestone next to the flower. After each item you bring to the girl the character becomes more ghost like, this is the girl getting past the death, for I also believe that the character is dead, only existing in the girls memories, when the character becomes more ghost like, this is another step in the 7 stages of grief. In the end the character fades away, and the girl releases a bird, this is a common symbol of letting go, and the last step of the 7 stages of grief, acceptance.
I also decided to name the character Jack.

I'm supposing that LittleHat's explanation of this beautiful story was most definitely right, but it could mean different things. Say, the girl never noticed the boy through out her life, only noticing the prettier things in which he left for her. As they continued through their lives, the gifts got more mature (necklace) and finally a flower which would've been by his grave so she would remember him. When all of the gifts were all gone (letting go of the dove), she finally turned to see him but noticed he had died. He had taken all the colour out of his life and given it to her to make her happy.

The play button doesn't work here. However, you can play the game on ArmorGames, so here's the link! https://armorgames.com/play/12117/grey
(Yes, I posted this before, but I'll do it again so more people can see this! :D)

I too confirm that the "Play" button doesn't work in any browser, with or without ad blockers. I manage to play the game only in armor games where the "Play" button works fine.

I'm telling you guys, and I've suggested this before, but there SHOULD be a section under the name of, "Meaningful". Hell, there'd be so many good stories in there. Grey, The Majesty of Colors, A House in California, Don't Look Back, I wish I were the Moon, Babies Dream of Dead Worlds, I Can Hold my Breath Forever, ImorTALL, Storyteller, The Company of Myself, and more... I've done it once and I'll suggest it again.

I've seen some good explanations of this game and i would like to add my own:
When i first realized the boy was fading while the girl stayed completely black (solid) as the boy went everywhere to give her the colors of her world, it represents how the girl takes him for granted. He is willing to do anything for her such as... bring color to her colorless world. He fades into her background, while she enjoys the color he brought her and he has no time to enjoy it, because all he wants is the girl.

As I realised what was happening to the boy, I actually felt like I was losing something. The beautiful, yet simple piano score added a lot to this game, while the symbolism behind the game was touching. My favourite game on Kongregate.

What a beautiful game and story. The player is a ghost, a loved one who has passed away. You try to cheer up the non-playable character, who is depressed and mourning. Slowly, the world around the two of you is given colour as each item is returned to the NPC and you become more transparent and faded. At the end, the NPC fondly remembers you but no longer chains you down and you ascend to the afterlife in peace.

Him being dead would make sense. The point of it is that as she dwells on him more and more, she realizes that the happiness he brought her while alive far outweighs her immediate grief. She is able to let him go because she is happy once again. The tombstone was what really got me :'(

I find the game a bit like this: Perhaps he is part of her imagination, and when he gives her items, me brings her closer and closer to reality, until he, part of her imagination, is destroyed. I don't disagree to anyone about their ideas, but just perhaps...
I totally agree with EVERYONE. Why won't Kongregate make a category for these types of games? Just simply add a tag, please. It can't be that hard. Just give it a name something like 'touching' or something!! PLEEEEAAASE!!

Beautiful, think of the bird as his spirit, as time went on and memories passed, she could finally remember him without sadness and regret then let him go and be free. Just lke a bird needs to be.

A pretty game, but at the same time, there's something about the protagonist or the love interest ending up dead that runs a thread of stale sameness through them. Love, life, and death are the most poignant issues humans have express themselves about, but not the only things.

That is a truly beautiful game. It's art, game, story and tragic all in one. It's so hard to find games like this on Kongregate. I highly recommend that Kongregate should have a separate part with sad games like Grey, The Majesty of Colors, The Company of Myself and Don't look back. I nearly cried when I saw the grave, the ending was so touching. I love the mixture of kid and adult mementos and how the boy slowly fades everytime you give an item to the girl. It seems simple but when you think about what it's about it's really quite complicated. Make more games like this please! I love the comparing dove to the man. Truly amazing (: 5/5
