These tutorials are good, but why make everything in a new as file? Why not just put it in the frame? And btw, is the contest just for games like this?I am making a very similar one, but not using this code...

These tutorials RAWK!!! They are by far the most concise, effective and straight-to-the-point actionscript tutorials I have ever seen on the web. Kudos. I'm already preparing the art for my new, very own shooting game.

I say that the time between tutorials are good for experimenting.
and if you say "But the trial is just 30 days and its too expensive to buy". Use google, do some research on "torrents" and it will open a whole new world =D.

@cheekylee: wasn't there a sort of disclaimer at the start, warning off potential newbies from diving headlong into actionscript?

It's pretty frustrating that the contest submission starts on October 28, but the final tutorials aren't even going to be released until November 4.
There are going to be a lot of games submitted that don't have any of the finishing touches.

Lol, nvm my first 2 comments.
All I did wrong was a spelling mistake: I didn't write onEnterFrame but I wrote onEnterframe.
Now I really do realize that capitals are pretty important...
anyway, it sucks that entire Flashes can be spilled because of these mistakes.

if anybody is willing to check out my flash, and see if they can find my error, i'll send it to them.
oh, and yes, I Have checked the Compiler Errors box, but it says it's all fine and clear.
ty in advance

I think I did exactly what this tut sais me to do, but when i publish my movie, the enemy part isn't working.
I doublechecked everything, but it's all almost the same (the order is a bit diffrent, but that shouldn't matter, right??)

Kongregate benfit from people buying Flash because they get more games. However, Kongregate also benefit from people pirating Flash.
I'm liking the tuts, but think they maybe needed an introductory one first, talking about the concept behind ActionScript. I imagine some people are confused by things that anybody who has done any kind of programming can understand perfectly well.

hyperjumble, i dont get why you find it so hard, my brother 11 years old has already finished all the ones that are out.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
hyperjumble, I'd really be tempted to help you out, but honestly, if you can't follow the tutorials and get it then you're beyond my help... these are so simple to understand my 8 yr old daughter is doing them with no help from me. Making flash games is probably just not your calling.

To all those people saying the gap gives them time to experiment, have you considered *waiting until you've experimented* before moving on to the next one? that way you can - and I know this is a strange concept - have all the time you like to experiment before moving on.
Just because the next part's up doesn't mean you absolutely have to watch and follow it immediately...

The alien ships (EnemyShip) does spawn, just late because we added an extra 50 pixels on the right so it takes time for the ships to move onto the stage.
Loving the tuts btw, I prefer having the tuts spaced out because then I have time to mess around with the code (changing variables to the extreme ;D)

where are the next parts? this is fantastic, i have owned Flash Professional for a while now and these tutorials have inspired me to try my hand at making a flash game!
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
All going great, got my scrolling background and my ships working fine but i agree it is annoying that they can't release them all at once. The wait between the releases does give me time to try experimenting with the code to make my own game.

That aside, just want to say that I'm really enjoying these. I've been wanting to get into Flash games programming for a while, but I've never found a tutorial that clicked as well as this one.

lyankyj - I agree it'd be nice if they were all out together, especially given the competition deadline, but I don't see how Kongregate benefit from you buying an Adobe product. If that's what they were bothered with, why would they be pointing people to free, open-source Flash editors, too? The Flash trial is just the most user-friendly & legal way of starting out.

...
the problem is not with the "oh, my app will expire" thing. but with the thinking: they think with these weekly waits and with the expiration time more ppl wiill buy the product. That is their goal. For us, who cares while there is the internet, if we want smg we get it.
This is why this Adobe-ad-stlye won't really work, this is why it it not that clever.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
ok.... i agree with the others, tuts shld come out all at one time... becoz... nvm... anyway help! i did everything and no compiling errors but when i test the movie no alien ships come out!
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
If you have the trial you have no place in these tutorials. Im sorry your too stupid to use google. Get over it kids.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Agreed, it would be really nice to have them all come out at once to give us more time to play around before the trial expires.

Personally I pity the fact that we have to wait 3 weeks for the whole tutorial. Since Flash is only free for a month, we only have one week after to play with it and I don't think that is enough for me to be convinced and buy it for that much money.
Just my opinion.

before anybody sais anything bad: this is for beginners and well, it's great! most of the tutorials out there are hard to understand even for people with previous programming experiences. But not this one..
