I love the science behind this, and it can even be used to model real life: Humans packed too closely or far away from each-other are bound to die. Or, if you believe humans can survive none-the-less, Mycelium follows rules similar to this, it's really fascinating!

@Pokejoe-thats a glider, but even better, try a light weight spaceship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Game_of_life_animated_LWSS.gif

@missem200 a waist if you do not understand it maybe but this game is older and has been played by more people and analysed in more depth than any other game on this site.

is there a goal of this? like killing all instantly, or filling the whole board up, or i dont know? it seems pointless to me.

Poke-Joe, that's called a glider and if you have ACTUALLY played the Game of Life before and not just coming across it, you would know.

i put a horizontal line at the bottom then waited for the right moment then i put a vertical line.... lets just say it looked awesome!

make one of those things where at the top it diagnoly into 2 and then those 2 each have one square directly beneath them and then it goes diagnoly down again back into one. now put another square in the lower spot where it touches 5 at once. wait until it completly stablizes and place another square in the lower spot of the lowest thing-a-ma-jig so it touchesfive of them at once and then play it and just watch. if you do it right you can see faces

Hit the random button. It's much better than wasting your time filling all the boxes. It will go forever with crazy designs. I just did one that didn't stabilize into certain shapes or patterns until after over 2000 steps

John Conway is a mathematician above many others, intelligent and able to make a game out of a simple mathematical pattern. Wow!

Try it!

Cool program, now you just need to come up with a way to really make a game out of it. I don't know, maybe some kind of sim managament type system?

Yes! i spent 10 minutes filling up every square thinking something awesome would happen and they all died. LIKE THIS SO PEOPLE DON'T WASTE THEIR TIME!

In genetics, to prevent infinite loops there can be a maximum allowed side step. You should also implement this feature and take an action when those side steps are reached.

if you want a checker board draw horizontal lines on every second line and then draw vertical lines (without lifting mouse) on every second line. If some horizontal lines are the same in a column draw over one of them (preferably the middle one if there is one (dont lift mouse)) and if and vertical lines are the same in a row draw over one.

I dont really understand the point of this game but its great if you want to make a mosaic. Wonder what happens if you click start on a mosaic...
