frustrating game but here are a couple tips for newbies. 1. if a general is in a neigboring nation attack it before it attacks you (you can tell it is a general by a full gold facemask). 2. only defend, never attack in battle until you have at least beat persia (after you kill persia they cant raid you anymore. I took out persia ASAP and after that the game is painless) 3. upgrade your money making before your units (trading with the west and the war taxes) 4. PAY ATTENTION TO THE ADVISORS! they tell you when a persian army is coming and what the general is best at so you can take out those units 5. dont worry about most of the countries until you have beat persia.
The game can be frustrating when you first start but stick with it, it really developes into an amazing game.

I agree with most who say this game is easy on son of zeus, maybe have more units? i feel like im using same units the entire game... Persian mode too? play with persian units and ally with other countries?

game is easy, as long as you know the basic strategy and follow through it: just attack the troops with their weaknesses or use summon strongest troops right before weak enemy units like archers get past your border

Guys, just because it's similar to a previous game does not mean it is a rip-off. If it brings new ideas to the table it's not.

If you feel the game is too easy try wining son of zeus in minimum time (5 years). This means you have to take a province every turn and cannot loose a battle. After some struggle I manage to do it about half of the times I try. The strongest start I found is upgrading armor and trade routes first turn and buy swords the second. From that point on you try to only buy as few units as possible to secure the win and making the important upgrades (giving priorities to weapon and armor upgrades) and only transitioning to stronger units when you can by having easier fights next round (since buying stronger units is expensive and will reduce your army size). The reason armor and weapon upgrades are better than gold is because you are loosing less money by having stronger units and wining the fight faster than you gain by getting gold upgrades (that being said you should still make few gold upgrades when possible). Whao, once you've taken over persia, All you need is Companion Cavalry with full upgrades for most enemy troops. Might lose a couple CC if the enemy sends spearmen but you can just overrun them with your 3 sec horse recharge. 5/5 Love the game. :D

I like it how you can take on the masses of armies of the persians with just a little army. Makes you feel like you are Alexander yourself (the real Persian army was huge too, larger than the Macedonian army anyway).

Historical note: Alexander's pikemen would not be called "Macedonian Pikemen" they would actually be called "Phalangmen"

im interested in the fact that if the persians take one your countries you cant defend it at all you have to retake it rather than defending it like the persians do

@arakantos, the problem with using Companion Cavalry in that is is that the enemy is quite capable of responding by sending several spear infantry to fight it. Companion Cavalry may be strong, but it can't beat 5 Kardake or Medean Infantry. If you use this strategy, I recommend buying at least ten and/or using archer/peltast support.

Dont just say Alexander is a rip off. Ever heard of a genre? If you play it for at least 10 mins you realise this game is decent. Finding ways to beat enemy generals. recruit awesome armies of up to 200 men. upgrades are also cool. I would say Alexander is better than warlords. Enemy armies actually attack you in Alexander rather than sit there, waiting to be conquered like in Warlords. Alexander, in this case, presents more of a challenge.

Put a fast, powerful unit on an empty row (best available cavalry). With luck, it will kill one or two new opponents before reaching the other side, then it's health is restored. Can get through a lot of battles with very few casualties, and invest all your gold in cavalry improvements - ignoring the other weapons saves a LOT.

remember: just because a unit is considered a counter to another doesn't mean it will always win. if a super upgraded enemy cavalry unit goes against a militia it could take a lot of militia to fight

I think everything should be slowed down. The AI can summon a full line of men instantaneously. Meanwhile, I sometimes can't keep up with the right units. Otherwise, great game.

First time i played i played it on Son of Zeus difficulty (and won :D )
I love how you can just mess around after you take Persia! But this game could really be more enjoyable with badges, not something like purchase all upgrades, cos once you beat persia you can just click end turn over and over and buy it all. Something like complete on hardest difficulty, maybe do something, like take persia, by a certain turn?

I do have one thing to say about the game I think that our armies world be more like the persins meaning that we would have to move the army to a spot we can attack and that we could have multiple armies just on diffrent spots because you could have just taken persia and then attack Dacia on the other side of the map without having to move the army and with multiple armies you could attack areas at the same time

I'm experiencing some issues...this game was so great I wanted to play it again. So I pressed 'New Game' and selected my difficulty...and it told me I had won, with the statistics I had from playing the first time.

oh, and stop complaining that you cannot defend your countries. You can counter armies and generals tell you about persian armies. How can an army be in two places at once?

If anyone was wondering why the best cavalry in the game was called "companion cavalry" its because they would be made up of Alexander's companions. They are THE people you would want to be. They're the military AND social elite!

12.5 years, units trained: 1.266 killed: 2.857 Gold Earned 1,560,111. Wish it had badges and wish Babylonians or Egyptians had fought as well as Persians did. It took all excitement away once I wiped out Persians.. :S

Now when I play it second time I really wish they were more aggressive and not as sneaky as persians. Say you had Persians attacking it should show on the map colours as they're gaining ground etc. Atleast 3 nations fighting it would be most amazing ever! And yeah. There is bug after couple of rounds displaying instantly

Battle Instructions: Use Pikeman/Hypaspist/Cavalry combination in the middle game. Archer and Peltasts are somewhat useless in the game, since Cavalry takes a quick shot and u have to send pikeman to stop them. (They are actually good, but there are better units) Against Immortals, use well-upgraded Hypastist. (Range units can work, but u have to send them earlier, which hypastist works better) Against Range, use Cavalry. Against Cavalry, use Long Spearman (Pikeman,Guard) when you have almost infinite money, use Guard/Companion Cavalry since it is the best (and the most expensive) combination. Always remember to hotkey your units to counter-attack your enemy. Upgrade wisely. They really affects the game. (Please press + if this helped you)

It feels like tons of games have been made in this genre, but the way this one does resource, army management is exactly what they've all been missing.
