Despite making some criticisms of the game, I suggest making all your survivors soldiers. The zombies that surround you keep scaling. The soldiers are the best way to keep your city from being overrun.
Starting off, I usually check to see if there's a lab, school, and hospital.
Hospital is a must. The laboratory is a second must. School is a luxury. Send the survivors with no skills with soldiers to convert them into soldiers. Convert your suburbs into farms. You'll need it once you make a radio to attract people to your base. Food and happiness are your worst enemy. They go hand in hand. If you have enough places for gathering food you can throw parties at bars to keep your morale up to prevent people from leaving.

Another dumb thing is people dying right when the food hits 0. Give them at least 3 days to starve for crying out loud.

This game on difficulty doesn't scale well and there's really no reward for doing a higher difficulty. Don't waste your time. Just do normal if you want to complete the game.

I don't like the game. You can't recover from losing a couple squares. Once you lose the first square you it's pretty much game over.

There are four possible endings:
1. Research cure to the zombieism in the lab;
2. Destroy the evil portal in the Evil Graveyard;
3. Draft the Constitution in the City Hall;
4. Reclaim all buildings.

Still one of my favorite games for replay value, even if nightmare is a bit easy. I would recommend the soldiers -1% danger when scouting be transferred to the scavengers and some additional bump for the scientists (+ 1% food production?).

You can turn the music off. While in the game, on the upper left, click the wheel shape with the note over it; then click music. (This is also where you can quit your game.)

A few weeks into nightmare mode a survivor named Chuck Norris joined my fort and then somehow died randomly from a bite the next day. Not exactly what I was expecting...

I tried speeding through the days without doing anything and eventually ended up with only the Leader left. She held the police station by herself, and each night one of the people who had already died starved to death.

"Whats that? We're about to be over run with hordes of zombies?"
"Let me just plant this turnip and I'll be right over."

i prefer the second but i thought i would give the first a shot. i am on easy mode day 200 and losing with 2%s....WTF MAN TWO F*CKING PERCENT?!? I HAVE LOT ALL MY SOLDIERS ON 2%S AND BUILDERS ON 1%S i lost all my leaders on damn illness's cause there was only one hospital on the map.........

Rosie Campbell (leader): "who the heck sent a survivor out there on his own to kill zombies? Well congratulations, he didn't stand a chance, and never came back."
Me: yeah I wonder who... :3

went all out and got the cure for zombieism, shut down evil portal, and captured every building on the map on day 174, so its prety much farmville from now onwards lol

Claimed half the area, completed it in around an hour, I like this game and would recommend it to anyone thinking of trying it out.

i've sealed the portal, rebuilt the whole city, cured zombieism, established a constitution, and am now the president of a governed society...
i'm proud of myself

If could change anything about this otherwise awesome game, it would be to give us an option to turn off the notices that come up after every day. They don't give any info that isn't shown elsewhere, and half the game is spent clicking through them.

Have those extra people do a myriad of other jobs. The game is easier if you rush towards a side [corner] anyways.... Seriously though, I hope you aren't only attacking / reclaiming, etc., one building at a time. There are so many jobs for the people to do. Keep the people busy, busy, busy, while also making sure you have enough guys to stand guard.

ok ill put 2 builders on now what do i do with my 1000 others but if i put my other 100 on it will still take 2 days WTF

My advice for those struggling with this game is to start strong. If the map generated on the first day is terrible (no labs or malls/stores nearby, only offices/warehouses/graveyards nearby, not enough useful survivors) then restart until the condition favors you. The game would be much more enjoyable with a "lucky" environment, trust me:)

It really wasn't luck. It may not have taken me too many tries to win Harder, but unlike Rebuild 2's Impossible, Rebuild's Nightmare took me awhile to learn. This is not a game where the hardest modes have enough luck to truly help one win. (Though too much bad luck is a definite possibility.) One just needs to learn to adjust their playing style until they finally get it right. If you get frustrated, try Rebuild 2. It is easier and the strategy is slightly different there, and it may help you learn to adjust your playing style, just as it did myself. (And winning the hard badge there might also help your confidence here.) If you keep at it, I am sure you can at least win playing Harder. Good luck. :)
