Either there's a bug, or I don't understand how can a player gain money in this game. What are the conditions to get credits?

Too much grind at the end. Whenever it's more efficient to do shorter runs and/or ones with lower scores to get more money it's a flaw in the game design. There should be some more expensive attacks that don't take as long to perform which would help deal with the major grind issues.
