Battle music really makes you go right into fight or flight mode, and since there's no run button, there's only one thing you can do...
PS, "item" probably isn't what you would think if you've ever played an RPG before.

I killed the rat, I thought nothing of it. I saw the bunny, and I was skeptical. I saw the cat, and looked for a run option. I checked the "secret place", and nope'd my way out of there.

Doesn't overstay its welcome. Seriously punches you in the gut with eight bit graphics and maybe two battles at most.
