Notes: the highlighted flags are the ones you can probably beat. There are 10 Tyrian quests for the badge (they're a dark blue color when they haven't been completed). They're in the middle bottom third of the map. Invest your points in wisdom first (8-9 pts is good).

been many a year since I played this. is there a way to sell units? I keep getting killed by enemies that absorb the element of things I don't seem to be able to remove from the field.

lol the first time i played this when it came out i was kind of young and naive and lost so many times i gave up... but now with improved logical thinking ive devised a way to make it so easy, all you do is hire one hero of each element and make sure both its units are magical units( you can use shop items to change units or elements to achieve this) so then you can invest all of your points into magic use and buy several copies of the item in the council shop that gives +6 magic use and +6 elemental and basically you're all set. and with such high elemental you can still easily kill enemies that are strong against your hero's element later xD

Swordplay at level 12 should give a 24% melee dmg increase, which means a melee unit with 15 base power, should deal at least 18 damage(rounded up 19 dmg), but in mission those melee units have 16 (base) power. Why?

Tip: Choose 2 hero mages and go full magic use, you will end up with 100+ dmg per shot. (IF not absorb i would go only 1)

I found some items that equip to the player directly. how do you equip stuff to the player, and how does that stuff influence anything?

It seems kind of pointless to not be able to fully expand a units skill tree. I know that this game and related games have ceased being updated but I would love it if I could get my units to have their entire skill tree open so I can watch full scale badassery.

Sometimes units gain xp from poison damage and sometimes they don't. Does anybody know where to find out why that is; it is not in the protectopedia

In Protector IV.V do I want a unit with higher or lower speed. I mean does it correlate to the speed of attacks, or the number of attacks in a set time frame or the cooldown.
Basically of my 2 units : Engineer (Speed of 8) and Technomancer (Speed 5) Which is faster?

The way I beat Forged Metal. With fire Warriors (armor) and Wizards (debuff). And poison Trainees (debuff). I put them the best accessories I could find from stores. Low cost for paving gloves is good too, have one.

Or maybe since this is a weak / strong map flip-flop, maybe try for another completely different map. Or look for a unit with consecration?

Follow the red flags to complete the questline required for the hard badge. Try to skill into Wisdom on both your heroes and yourself early on to increase your EXP gain, then skill into damage. Melee units are bad, and are to be avoided. Try to have at least 1 Frost and Fire hero in your loadout. Good luck, this game is an old school jewel!

are skills cumulative? If I have 3 units attack with a 1 damage per second infection will the enemy lose 3 hit points per second, or 1 hp p/s
the same with the debuff, slow, bleed, etc?

While I know the game isn't maintained anymore; balance-wise melee needs a buff. There's too many maps where you can't use melee or else you lose to the flying rounds. And melee doesn't get enough of a damage boost to justify being used over stuff that can hit flyers.
