If you want a cool map, just leave the box blank. You get an empty map with only four cities (the capitals), the names of which are pretty hilarious too. (Redosia capital: Undefined)
Also, it's probably one of the biggest challenges for you. Your only source of new troops are the capitals. Also, no water.

Anyone else noticed how the land changes from lush green fields to mud and tombstones when you fight? [+] if you did!

cont: throughout you have to continuously use a few weak units just picking up ports including those in Violets corner

Nilep; Unit ! goes straight to Tashkent then heads North up to Vilnius picking up a port on the way
Unit 2 Gets Bangkok
Unit 3 just goes east
Turn 4 you want to combine those forces on Tashkent, this unit is now strong enough to take New Delhi.
Up at Vilinius free up a weak unit that just keeps going up and down that east coast taking and retaking ports. Bangkok, Valencia and Venice now do nothing but defend. Between Vilinius and and New Delhi you can take Blue

Do you want the biggest challenge possible in this game? I got ya. Click on map number, delete whatever number is there, LEAVE IT BLANK, and hit play. Absolutely NO cities, NO ports, NOTHING. Just 4 capitals (For me, Redosia's capital is "undefined") Good luck on this one, morale dies fast!

I beat 189829 in 27 turns. Try starting as blue, make a pact with Green early on, then go for Red. Red will probably eliminate violet then fight green. With you and green both attacking Red, Red will lose, hopefully to you. In the meantime, send 2 or 3 ships with 99 troops into the water right next to Green's capital. As soon as both violet and red are defeated, use those ships to quickly take out Green. Violet and Red will both become independent again but you should have enough troops to quickly mop them up.

Nilep, 'ports win prizes', on close games I have sent a unit two thirds of the way over the board just to get a couple of ports. Close games blocking is also crucial, sacrificing a unit so the enemy takes a town on the 5th turn rather than the fourth for example can make all the difference.

656690, I did it first go but have probably played getting on for 10K games over the years, so my 'hard' and yours are inevitably going to be different. Yes, it is relatively hard though so don't worry about that :)

Thanks, Tookey. I'll keep trying for another few weeks, then if I still can't get it, I'll ask you for the first three or four moves...

nilep, if 622965 is really doing your head in I can help but suspect you will get more satisfaction beating it on your own

Nilep, good news is that it is beatable but the bad news is I have been playing Hex for 7+ years and still took me over an hour of losing again and again! 38 turns on final go and had to use a 'speech' which I don't like doing. Good luck

Gaaaa! Well, the good news is that I killed Blue on turn 13. The bad news is that I died on turn 14. It's progress ..

nilep122, about 622965: Do not take too many cities too early, but get some ports (Montevideo, Wuppertal). Spread a few small armies around Poznah to slow down Blue. Get Brussels, Orebro, and slowly move north. The Washington Area stays unclaimed for some time. Wait patiently for an occasion to defeat Blue. The rest should be easy.

nilep, had another go, took Athens and Kinshasa quite quickly, after that you should be cruising as you will have 2 points to attack Blue capital and then afterwards you can use Athens as your base to start hitting red. 25 turns and no 'speech' this time. Have fun mate

nilep122, yes, I presume you mean playing as Green on Hard. Sorry but I have no idea how to explain how. I did defeat them in the order of Red, Blue then Violet if that helps, I also had to use a 'speech'. If it really starts doing your head in I will have another go and try to give some pointers.

Sania, glad you are enjoying it! Yes the AI can be a bit odd but its still a challenge so maybe it doesn't matter? Port ownership makes a surprising difference so you might own more hex's but if they have 2 or 3 more ports than you it can be a struggle. I frequently send off one unit just collecting ports.

Ok, I won 1 medium game, but I still stand on my point about AI. Super illogical. They let one of my soldiers run loose on their territory, when they could easily eliminate him, they just follow him. They surround a town with 5 times bigger numbers yet not attack, basically avoid conflict where necessary and go into conflict where it's not necessary.
