This game would be drastically improved by adding mouse-look, a "forward" key, and cross-hairs.

I don't seem to be capable of dying. Not by letting enemies have their way with me. And not by falling off the map. (Falling off the map just seems to soft-lock the game.)

I think you *really* need to implement camera-relative movement. Trying to remember North, East, South, or West, so I can figure out if I need to press the North, South, East, or West key to turn left is a huge hassle.
