the problem with adding the engine burnout is that now you constantly lose power and they come wreck you. the engine burns out if you just try to manuver, something they can do with no problem. so inevitably you either stay still and get killed or try to fight back, stall out and get killed.

The optimal strategy seems to be to fly around in a wide circle, letting the vipers commit suicide. You'll never be hit unless a viper spawns on top of you.
