sometimes buying 10 will make the price skyrocket but buying 50 will let it keep dropping..

When does the game ends ? But, well, even if it had an ending, it's a bit too unbalanced. It's hard to buy 100 mines when you already need to buy oil, by waiting for the prices to be low, then waiting for a good offer, then buy mines and eventually ruin yourself, leading to an impossibility to acquire more oil.
The idea is good, but it needs balance.

There is a balance actually. The game was supposed to be difficult. You should play "Kiwi's Quest" if you prefer easy games. Or you should try "Fade" if you prefer awesome games ;) There are two ways to complete "Merchant": you can either rely on you luck and accept every risky deal or you can work out a strategy corresponding the market behavior.
