Well... After reading LordBucket's interpretation, I came up with my own...
It seems to me that you're in a world where you'd like to be many things, but sometimes you can only be one at once in order to fit into a group. That's what the colors are. Gray is a mix of every color, but darker, which sort of seems to me as an analogy to the fact that you can't do everything in a perfect way. When you find the last square who actually likes you, you find someone who actually "brightens" you up and shows that it's possible that other people may have your ways to things. I may be wrong, but that's what I thought of it. It's a constant quest to find where we belong. While we're on to it, we try to fit ourselves into different societies, trying to find what do we want... When we do, we feel good, which is why gray becomes white. That's it.

So what does the ! button do? it was never explained :S

The '!' will make your character say '!', and it's useful to locate your character if you can't figure out which one is you :P.

That last level was a pain.
I feel people lie more the greater the friendship as you do not want to lose them, even if the friendship is very honest and open as time goes on people and things change.
There should be achievements an easy one for not picking a colour for level 3.

I'm not sure what the intended message here was supposed to be, but the message I get is that you can only survive by lying to people, it's ok to break up other people's friendships to survive, and if people discover the truth about you, they'll reject you, but they'll accept you if you go right back to lying about them.
Did you play until the end? Tricking others will only get you so far, once you get to level 4 it starts being ineffective, and on level 5, you're going to have to do something that changes the message completely.
