The biggest flash of brilliance I saw was with the combat system, it was one I've never seen before and with a bit of polish could work. I say forget about that platforming crap and focus on how better you can implement the bar combat system, you have something special now!
My advice going on forward, if you want to keep the platforming bit then you have to do a complete overhaul and look at DungeonVania. If you want to focus more on your combat bar system then find an overworld system that better suits it. (pt2)
Wow! What a feedback. When I see that the game has more than 400 plays (which is a lot for starters like us), but just one person spend his time to write about it, we feel is really worth the time we invested in the game. Thank you for that and we'll keep your considerations in mind and continue working to improve our knowledge and share good things with the community.

Very buggy but I'll give you a break on that since you're already getting burned on that, instead I'll focus more on the gameplay. Compared to DungeonVania it seems you have stepped back in some core places while advanced in the basics, this may seem weird but let me explain.
DungeonVania had amazing and tight controls with a couple kinks, it had potential to be an action RPG with its current standing. Shadows of the Castle though kinda went down the other way, with slower clunky controls. I had a lot of problems with the simple jumping segments because I felt like a brick, and even though the main attack isn't used - it was so slow it was unneeded. (pt1)

The action button will 'break' in battle meaning that the battle will be unfinishable.
