Topic: Kongregate / a game I made before I started Kongregate

Hi guys -

I haven’t been around much, lately, partly because I’m starting a non-profit to improve the problem of money in politics. You should hear more about that very soon.

But! I wanted to stop by to tell you about back when I used to make games. It was the 90s, and the Internet was not very good yet. My friends and I started a little game studio, and made a demo of an online RTS. It involved using Tetris pieces to connect islands floating in the sky so you could sacrifice your enemie’s priest.

It was a little weird, but fun. PC Gamer gave it a 91, I think? Activision published it. But it did not sell. In fact, C-Net named it the #1 Game of All-time that Nobody Bought.

Luckily, some people liked it. And the people who liked, it liked it a lot. Some of them, led by a farmer in West Virginia, decided to remake the game for modern machines. It’s called Disciples of the Storm. I helped them out, giving them $20,000 to get the game in shape to do a Kickstarter for the additional funds they would need. And they’ve launched that Kickstarter. Check out the video and see if you think it’s a game that should exist: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/525138512/disciples-of-the-storm

Thanks!

Topic: Kongregate / Say Hello to Your New CEO

Hi all -

Today I’m announcing that I’m stepping down as CEO of Kongregate – I’ll continue to be here half time, with my sister Emily taking over the CEO role. Here’s the email I sent out to our team about it – TLDR: I couldn’t be happier or more proud of the team and my sister.

Dear Kongregators,

It’s going on 8 years since Emily and I started Kongregate – it’s kind of amazing how much has changed since then. For instance, this was the top selling phone:

There was a new social network growing like crazy:

In the spring of 2006, I was working at Pogo with BenV and Rusty on a downloadable version of Poppit.

I quit my job at EA, reserved Kongregate.com, and put up this homepage:

Emily joined 2 weeks later. Our first day of work together was at Casual Connect in Seattle, where we toasted our new venture over lunch at Benihana…

6 months later, we had hired the beginnings of a great team, and built this: this https://web.archive.org/web/20061223022832/http://kongregate.com/:

I can’t express how proud I am of the team and the site we’ve built. I’m literally tearing up as I type this. I’m especially proud of my little sister:

And I’m even more proud of what’s happened this year. And, of the fact that I wasn’t really needed for anything (except recruiting the first two members of our mobile team, Mike and Pany).

Today we have loyal players, happy developers, a great business, and great leadership.

I’ll be at Kongregate, Mondays, Wednesdays, and half-days on Friday. I’ll spend the rest of my time on something new in the world of politics… stay tuned for more on that!

As I said on the call, I’m the happiest I’ve been in my life, and I’m bursting with pride at what we’ve done together and with what I know we’ll continue to do.

Sincerely,

Jim Greer
CEO^H^H^HCTO, Kongregate

Topic: Kongregate / New Kongregate Version: Speeding Up Page Loads

I’m sorry that the scripts broke, but our tests show that for users with an empty cache, we reduced game page load times significantly. I’m afraid the script authors will need to fix.

Yes, we changed the ordering of our javascript loading to speed things up.

Viewing high scores has been temporarily disabled due to a performance problem – they are still being recorded and saved, so don’t worry. They’ll be back.

It doesn’t appear to be mentioned anywhere, so is Kongregate looking for ideas to fund or existing games/prototypes/studios/etc to fund? (The Mochi fund is the pitch an idea, so I just wanted to clarify this.)

Currently we’re only looking at games with a playable prototype (or more)…

Hey guys – the guy we hired from Zynga is the founder of Urbansquall – who made Battalion Nemesis, Bloody Fun Day, etc. He’s much more of a Kongregate kind of guy. His studio got bought by Zynga but he really wanted to come here.

Topic: Kongregate / Introducing Cinematic Mode

Originally posted by 123aaa789:

A slight bug I’ve been having with a few games, link to image because it’s big. Basically, when I close the cinematic mode thing, it offsets the game and chat in a weird way (you can see it best in the bottom right) and causes some strange clipping (you can see it in the top right), and it only gets fixed with a refresh (pay no attention to it being white where the game normally is, that’s just the image capture tool’s fault). This game was Overtorque Stunt Racing that caused it to look like this.

Thanks for the bug report! What browser are you using? Also, what resolution is your screen? Does it happen no matter what size your browser window is, or just in certain sizes?

Topic: Technical Support / If you are having Kongregate problems, try this.

Last night our DNS provider failed. We have fixed the root problem, and will be switching to a more reliable provider.

Because DNS is cached, you may still experience problems connecting to Kongregate, depending on what your DNS server is.

Google operates a free public DNS server, and it has correct entries for Kongregate. If you want to switch to using it, here’s how to do it:

Ah, now I get it. The recommendations on the game page are actually ‘people who liked this game also liked these games’. But we couldn’t think of a short way to say that. And it does include games you’ve already rated.

Topic: Kongregate / Deleting old users.

Right now our policy is that we rename accounts to delXXX after two years if they weren’t used at all after being created. Even if the user came back the next day after creating it, and then never returned again, we don’t do it. We could maybe be a little more aggressive than that…

Topic: Kongregate / how the heck do i get rid of this badge from my recommendations?

This is kind of a bug – I looked at your recommendations. It can’t make quite enough personal recommendations to fill the homepage module so that last two are just ‘popular badges’. For those it doesn’t check if you hate the game… Toss the Turtle is popular, so that’s why it’s in there.

Are you on PC or Mac? Mac Chrome doesn’t work well with Unity, nothing the dev can do. If you’re on Windows make sure you’ve got the latest Chrome and the latest Unity player. (It’s not a Flash game).
