… for some reason my post isn’t showing up (probably a problem with my computer) so I can’t edit my post, but I’d like to add that it won’t change much. Of course there are going to be more changeovers, with this new and improved, easier-to-use technology.

EDIT: I dunno what happened, but what I said was, I don’t things will change (much). It’s utterly repulsive to most to change genders, even putting sterility aside. Is it considered gay? Well, how does society view a gender change now? That would remain the same.

I don’t think anything would change. Even today, the idea of a gender change is utterly repulsive to most, even taking sterility out of the picture. As for ‘straight’ versus ‘gay’, when someone today changes genders and partners with the opposite sex (i.e. the gender they changed from), are they considered gay by today’s standards? As far as I know they are (feel free to correct me on this).

Invite her to a setting that would allow you to be together alone. (For example, the beach, the park, etc. The cinema is not such a great idea the first time, because you aren’t really talking.) Don’t expect anything to happen, it’ll just tighten your friendship. It helps that you guys are friends already, and both are of the same social group. It’s possible that she has shown indications of liking you, but you just haven’t picked them up. For instance, if you jog, ask her to go with you. Ask her to study for a test together. It should get to the point that you won’t need to say anything, because it’s a given that you feel that way and she feels the same way about you. If she seems unterested, do not push harder.

Vika, if the infector doesn’t know, this whole discussion goes out the window. My point was if the victim is unaware that their partner has a disease, and the partner isn’t sharing that information (or lies about it, aimed at axlk), then obviously this isn’t such a good match up, and they are simply together for the physical pleasure aspect of a relationship. As I said:

“…if someone isn’t going to be straight enough with you that they won’t even provide this information, then maybe this isn’t the type of character you should be bedding with.”

While this was a fictional story I read a few months ago, it essentially addresses the points you make. Quite a good read, if I may add.

On the planet ‘Placet’, at certain times during the day, light slows down to the speed of sound. Since you got this far already, I’ll let you think and try to figure out what that would do to your perception of the world. ;)

Also- I don’t feel as this is a fair title for the thread; none of this would apply if you were, say, blind, so I think it’s fair to say that you are here right now, you just don’t perceive it to be that way.

If one is in a situation where it is impossible to confirm his partner as healthy, then maybe one should be more careful not to hop into bed with the first yuckaputz who shows a little leg. Sorry if that comes across as a bit obnoxious, but I can’t imagine that anyone with true feelings towards another would ever infect them on purpose. It’s certainly possible, however, that my teenage naivety comes into play here, but I truly believe that if someone isn’t going to be straight enough with you that they won’t even provide this information, then maybe this isn’t the type of character you should be bedding with.

I disagree. STDs are spread through very intimate actions, and, as such, I would say that it is the ‘receiving’ party’s (that is, the one being infected) responsibility to be very sure the person they are sleeping with is disease-free. While I don’t say the ‘infector’ is right in doing this (from a moral standpoint), I don’t see how one can be prosecuted by the law for doing this act that is totally consensual by both involved.

Jewish. Though I constantly read philosophical/scientific works to challenge my faith. As for the whole evolution thing, it’s possible to say that evolution fits with religion, even the Bible itself, since, from a religious perpective, creation has always been described in a very vague/mysterious fashion.

Interestingly enough, I happen to be Jewish, and the book was written in reference to the Jewish God, but it doesn’t matter for the sake of this discussion. Besides, no matter what faith, you essentially attribute the same features/abilities to God. As for the ‘G’ as opposed to ‘g’, I didn’t mean anything by it. I just thought grammatically it’d be more correct to capitalize it.

And in your previous post, what do you mean by ‘the author needs to do some research’? This model wasn’t to say you are God as in THE God, or a god at all for that matter. It was just meant in a way that you are in a position to play the role of God. I feel as if you missed the whole point of this thread.

The Problem:

You are given an island where several tribes live.

By nature and culture, these tribes are exploitative and belligerent. This results in much suffering on the island, caused by war poverty and prejudice.

They have been living this way for centuries without any sign of improvement.

Your Assignment:

To try to improve this society.

To teach its members to live together in harmony and reduce suffering to a minimum or eliminate it entirely.

To create a healthy society.

Your Resources:

You have all the resources that a highly advanced technology can offer.

You have the entire island under surveillance and can see what is happening in any place at any time.

You have such devices as cloud-seeding equipment and can plant underground explosives. Within reason, you can control weather, flooding, volcanoes and earthquakes, and produce any “natural” phenomenon on cue.

You also have devices that can be used to implant ideas through subliminal suggestion. You can implant ideas to entire populations or to certain select leaders.

However, you must take into account the sever limitations of subliminal suggestion. If you try to implant any ideas that go against the basic nature of the populace, they will be totally rejected and your efforts will be in vain.

One alternative would be to implant ideas that somehow would make use of the acknowledged bad nature of these people.

Your Restrictions:

Under no circumstances are the natives of this island to be aware of your presence.

This supersedes all other considerations.

The cultural shock caused by your revealing yourself would disrupt the entire fabric of the island culture. It would cause much suffering and more than offset any good that you could possibly accomplish.

The natives would be reduced to a state of almost vegetable-like dependence from which they would be unlikely to recover. If they did recover, they might rebel so violently as to eliminate any positive values they might have originally had.

Therefore, the restrictions that you not reveal yourself must be followed without exception under any circumstances.

But aside from this restriction, you have a free hand to proceed as humanely or as ruthlessly as you see fit.

In short, you have the opportunity to play God.

What would you do?

(Note: I did not write this. It is a direct quote from a philosophy book I was reading (it was addressing the question as to why, if God exists, does He ignore suffering. This thread is not here to address that question), and I am just curious to see what you guys come up with. Also- I considered putting this in the FG forum, but I decided it’s not so much a ‘game’ as it is just a place for you to respond as to what course of action you would take in this situation. I had it in OT, but that didn’t work out, so here we are.)

I’m pretty sure that comic book sales are going down.

As such, the value of old comics go up. Marvel has been killing many of their heroes through the Civil War/Ultimatum story arcs.
