Topic: AdVenture Capitalist / Breach of trust

So, I came back after two days, when I saw that update notice in messages. The first thing I noticed was that the game still ate my two day’s earnings (burp), damn glutton. However, I didn’t notice any bugs after that and offline mode probably started working. Let’s celebrate … or not, if a cheating girlfriend told me she still loves me, I wouldn’t cry of joy either.

You view a game differently when you give money to it verses someone that just plays it for fun. I understand your reasoning to leave the game, and people need to view it from your point of view. I see it as “Why give money to a company that doesn’t really seem to care about it’s players” at the end of the day the game is made for the players, and it’s a developers job to make the game appealing to the players. There seems to be good intent put into the updates but so much that needs to be done is ignored. The make 50% profit because of manager speed, the x15 surge is nice but no idle income doesn’t make that scale even to me.

Vlasec i’m sorry for the issues this game has, and I hope to see you back playing one day but I understand if you don’t.

I kinda like their approach to people, they talk nicely to everyone. From that I believe their intentions aren’t bad. But their decisions are usually bad in almost every aspect you could think of. And I especially don’t like how the updates change the gameplay really radically. From being at a wall to doubling your angels in 10 minutes, thus waiting for quadruple at least or even more. Then the only thing that matters is sitting actively near it, giving no you absolutely reward for grinding or warping the time. I mean, if you get two upgrades per business type (both x3) and two more for all (x3 and x5), you’ll get x135 total multiplier from those, making it ridiculously fast, until you hit another wall yet again. No university degree in maths is needed to realize that.

(4) … you should not pay for the future of a game but you should pay for the time you have already spent. …

Well, you made some points and I want to react to those.

1) You are right that it is mostly meant just to support the game. However, you can support it with multipliers as well. So the reason why would anyone choose gold suit instead of just getting some more x15 is just style. But it looks like this donation was disregarded.

2) Well, I can agree that multipliers give you a constant advantage. The same doesn’t apply to time warp and angel claim. I wonder why they even offer such options. One could use it to get some extra progress in a slow grind. Then an update comes and everyone catches up in no time. HyperHippo updates the game without a glimpse of balance or continuity.

3) Yeah, it’s one’s own decision, but it’s not exactly the same as donation. If a game has “donate” button and I really like it, I just donate. Here, one can pay for extras. And if you do and the devs then kinda remove the advantage you had over those who didn’t pay (or made worse decisions) by equalizing the score by a silly upgrade, you have a good reason to be “nitpicky”.

4) If it was just a donation, what you wrote would make a complete sense. The fact it’s in fact a kind of purchase makes it slightly off, but still it’s a good point.

Anyway, I met so many people in chat room yesterday and the day before that, saying, “It’s a free game, you don’t have the right to criticize it”. It’s a bit like you had no right to criticize the polluted air you breathe. If you don’t like the air, just move to a city that is not polluted as much, right?

Also, someone said “see you tomorow Vlasec”. Hi, I see you here, but we won’t meet in game chat no matter which room you choose. I don’t play it today.

Hopefully I translated it well. It’s an act usually performed by a state and its representatives. Be it purposeful or caused by mistake, investors take it as a betrayal and they are much more hesitant about investments in the country. The state loses rating quickly if there’s some especially serious case of that.

In AdVenture Capitalist, one can “invest” his time and his kreds, I did both. The kred multiplier is probably the most significant kred upgrade. It is however often forgotten in updates and there were already several bugs that ignored the multiplier (e.g. the “your money is safe with us” screen). Then there is time warp – if the game was a slow grinding with no freebies, it would be very helpful, but there are those huge flashy updates every once a while when they come to a hippo’s mind. I skipped the angel claim feature completely, and then there is the gold suit that is no longer visible on the main screen at all. Be it purposeful or caused by mistake, HyperHippoGames make sure you regret paying them.

As for time invested, yesterday in morning I noticed the update. I almost came late to work, trying to upgrade my portfolio as much as I can, so that I earn good offline money. I came back – and nothing. Zero money gained while I was away. With market surge nearly gone, I’ve just read the other people writing how they already have all the upgrades and managers while I was exactly where I left it in the morning, giving me no reward for the decision in the game’s world either.

So, that is probably how an investor feels when breach of trust happens. That is close to how an angel investor, hoping for huge outcome of his investments, ends up being burned on an altar with pentagram painted on it.

So I say goodbye, HyperHippoGames. You might have good intentions and effort, but the results are embarassing at best. If a child was tampering with the code, it couldn’t be much worse. The frequent bugs and the jumpy decisions undermine the value of anything i “invested” into the game. It also lowers the importance of decisions (should I get that angel upgrade already? when should I reset?) to pretty much insignificant. Your could easily have 4/5 from me, maybe even 5/5. But I updated the rating to 1/5 as those reasons above made me lose nearly all the interest in game.

Topic: AdVenture Capitalist / Progress while down is not correct

Reminds me of how I lost lot of money when (thanks to some Shockwave Flash Plugin crash) I opened the game and I saw no multiplier. Then I refreshed and multipliers were back, but over 12h worth of money were gone irreversibly. It kinda sucks to pay when it happens so often that some feature doesn’t pay attention to kred multipliers at all.

P.S. I realize where I messed up in my first post. I said “This would have a much larger impact…” I should have said “This could have…”

I’m interested in the results. The rounding might happen with the payment only with price being always counted from the base like $1 * 1.07^3650 in case of my lemons. Or, it might affect the price of next purchases as well and in this case, if it rounds rather up than down, it can cause some larger discrepancy later. If it rounded up only half of the time, it should actually be slightly cheaper rather than more expensive, though – since e.g. 98*102 is less than 100*100.

Topic: AdVenture Capitalist / calculating the cost of next upgrade

If you are really speaking of upgrades, none formula works for those. If you mean purchasing the business, there are formulas – for x1 purchase it starts on x1.07 on oil and ends with x1.15 on news (with lemonade being x1.07 again). For x100, you have to use 100th power of the multiplier, e.g. 1.15^100 = 1,173,415.45, so next 100 news cost more than a million times as much as the one you are buying right now.

If this doesn’t work for you either, then there must be a problem somewhere inside you.

Topic: AdVenture Capitalist / Scientific Notation?

A nice idea indeed, and I have yet another one:
The game uses the short scale now. There is long scale as well, that works a bit different way (used in most parts of Europe nowadays). So beside scientific notation and short scale, I’d love to see long scale as well.
E.g., a unvigintillion in short scale eqyaks an undecillion in the long scale. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales

Rather an improvement than an actual feature, but:
Could the Kongpanions be drawn as vector images? The game is in vectors, but the Kongpanion seems to be a bitmap.
Another one, could you work on the controls a bit? In jumps, it is very hard to land where you want to, but there is always some genius who makes those 1 tile landings in a pool of lava.

I’d like to have an option to change the shopkeeper’s apparel. Basically, you can customize your shopkeeper when the game starts. At this point, most people don’t care about that and they want to continue to the game itself.

I don’t know, maybe it would be better to have some limitations on it, like, doing it disables the change for a whole month or so. Changing one’s apparel every day would be pretty lame, anyway.

Sry man, RAM over 50% should still be very much OK. Only RAM over 80% is a problem, in case swap isn’t disabled, it swaps, in case it is, your apps can get out of memory. I have 16 gigs of RAM, it’s definitely not caused by RAM deficiency, crappy coding is much more probable cause, and maybe some Flash limitation as the devs mentioned.

Anyway, here is my workaround that actually works like charm! Just download GreaseMonkey (I suppose it’s not just for Firefox, but I’m not sure which browsers it supports). Then search for a script named Reload 4 Kong. It adds a little button to the top bar above the game, which says “Reload”. It reloads the game without ruining your chat conversation. It also saves you time with refreshing the whole page. I don’t know any better solution, but it’s surely a great workaround for the crappy coding of this game.

Dear cheesemeister, your “use google” tip is not much helpful. Could you instead try to link some particular article you found while googling that, or elaborate a bit more right there? Either would work. I prefer not wasting half of a day just searching if some guy in the forum was right.

In the few links I tried on google, there was some Wikipedia theoretical stuff. So I learned what is the difference between Netscape plugins API and Pepper plugins API. Well, it’s nice and I’m glad google is innovative in this plugin stuff. I just didn’t find anything about upgrading performance. I only know that PepperFlash is able to load the ballance to two (or possibly more) cores, making it more playable on e.g. some old laptop i5 with hyperthreading, but it changes nothing on the fact that the game is CPU-heavy as hell.

This game was developed by incompetent beings (people, or maybe even monkeys?). There is something like memory leaks. CPU-intensivity is way higher than you’d expect in a game with so simple graphics, on 5yo machines it’s barely playable. The build screen frequently freezes for a few seconds (sometimes for more than a half minute, which is the point where I prefer to refresh instead of waiting if it ever unfreezes, which it might not). Also a lot of aforementioned bugs, most of which are probably not yet fixed. Then the pre-crafts are sometimes such a nonsense (e.g. bagpipes made from drum, two daggers welded together and stuff).

There is something I still like on this game, there are some nice ideas, but the way it’s programmed is just horrible (way worse than most of the games here on Kongregate).

As for your groundhog days: You should get an error #. If you get the same number more than once (in a row), let me know.
I am also interested in the “very weird things”.

Okay, I disabled PepperFlash. Now there is only one process eating around 15-20% of my quad-core. Still freakin’ ineffective, but not nearly as bad as it was. However, it still gets frozen quite often, mostly in the build mode. It freezes anywhere else from time to time, it either stops reacting or there is a black screen with either Loading… or just blank. It happened to me in the pub, shop (daytime), city view, … It’s like it had some memory leaks or stuff and got out of memory, I dunno. I have over 8 GB free RAM most of time, so I doubt that would be the reason.

As for the “very weird stuff”, people in the shop started lagging, then it froze, but the progress-piecharts on the left and over the workers didn’t stop, neither did the day. I saw no customers, but if I clicked on the right spot where the customer stood, the dialog screen appeared. I finished the day, then it wrote I had to reload and I started the day over. It only happened in PepperFlash though. Now when something like that happens, it freezes completely and after I refresh the page, at least it continues from mid-day. A reload button that would be present all the time could help, I really HATE refreshing the whole kong page including the chat, all the time.

The game gets bugged and forces me to reload, pretty much often. I don’t know if AMD Phenom II X4 965BE (4yo quad core) is too weak to run the Flash game, or if there are some issues with Google Chrome. Most people don’t report such bugs. Sometimes it just lags in the day, sometimes it does very weird things and when the day ends, it reloads and starts over from the begining. So I have to deal with the 12 customers and make the stuff again.

I rarely have such troubles with anything in Flash. Not even in games that are said to be “CPU intensive”. Here, however, it spawns two processes with roughly 15% of CPU power eaten by each. Are you mining bitcoins in my browsers, or doing some CPU heavy stuff, or is it just so freakin’ ineffective crap by your devs?

A weird bug:

My leatherworker needs a 2-II sewing table. One of the tables is in progress to 2-II, the other one is nearly 2-V already. The worker looks, “hey, this one is 2-II, which is the lowest that fits my recipe”, and he selects the table. However, it’s not 2-II yet, it’s an upgrade in progress. So it says me I don’t have the needed table and I have to pay you money to get it earlier.

Well, I won’t obviously pay you huge money just because it’s bugged and paying goes faster than fixing. Try to fix this, my friends experienced it as well, and it’s fking annoying.

thebeeast, maybe you were allowed to take ONE greater demon item like power+2 or another crap.
I allowed someone to do it (since I brought those items), I needed space for new items I found.
BUT I HEARD YOU CLEARED ALL THE GREATER DEMON STUFF! That makes my visit go in vain.

If you didn’t mean any harm, you still completely ruined the vault and you are dangerous for being brainless.
Just try thinking sometimes. Most RoR members are around lvl 55. Some were waiting for this stuff.
Also, GM can clear the vault himself, selling the bad stuff for guild improvements.
Thanks for your help, now go away and don’t make me see you again.

Topic: General Gaming / Thousand dollar Soul

Well, it seems to me that the real Todd found out he has nothing to live for anymore. So he went retrospective. Using this device, he could even simulate what could happen. Maybe he lost the grasp of reality after so many resets, thinking of the real life the same way.

It is worth noting there are several endings for the real Todd:
a) Self-sacrifice four days before the attack
b) Stopped just in time while sitting in a parked car
c) Beaten while in bathroom of Clint&Angela’s house after the crime
d) Beaten while lying on a beach in Cancun two years after the crime
e) Never stopped with last known simulation 20 years after the crime

I am wondering:
- How quickly does that simulation happen? I suppose it must be really quick, as Todd used the simulation on the crime scene as well. Also, I suppose the simulation continues when the player returns while AI doesn’t notice being interrupted.
- The visit in Sudan – Are there more real-life scenarios unknown to us? Otherwise he should be in jail for attempted murder, not on a beach in Cancun.
- Does it just seem to me or are the AI people feeling alive? Especially if they can overtake a real human body.
- The people who were long dead before the brain scanners are alive there. Were they recreated from other people’s mental images of them?
- New people are born here. Some of them weren’t born in real life. Does the simulator even generate new souls?
- What happens to the body in real world when it’s actual owner dies in the simulation? Is it brain dead, corpse, or is the person alive with some of the souls in the simulation? Especially the Sudan path gives me these ideas. Also, “Future” Todd killing AI with angelfire caused the souls to be mixed up, so it seems it is able of picking a soul.

Well, I can see about 25k players playing in a single moment. That would make them play quite a short time if 2 millions had to be active, meaning they visit kongregate at least weekly … Also, I don’t know where did you get those 2 millions, but I found many permanently banned players when looking for new trainees. They can’t be trained. So if you counted these as players …

Now it seems they got too bored to even update the data, funny :D Shit happens.

Topic: Kongregate / left 4 death month - what now?

So we have a left for death month, almost everyone including many inactive players is either zombie or trained survivor. What now? Is there gonna be something more? I hope that’s not all.

My opinion is that there should be some shootout or whatever. The survivors would be able to hurt the zombies (takes few hits to kill), zombies would bite the survivors (if successful) to infect them. Of course, it would be unfair if it would be possible to change sides in this part, then the zombies would never be able to win.

Also, I suggest that Kongregate level would be important in these fights somehow.

Just growth and growth, but it will stop soon, I suppose. Getting boring already and we’re not even through half of the month …
