Topic: General Gaming / Star Craft: Brood Wars Strategy talk

I will tell you about the basics.
-Get better economy for as long as you dare. Do not defend much. Offence is far better than defence in this game.
-Expand very early with all races.
-Scout alot and strike your enermy where he is weak.
-If your army is standing still it is costing you alot. An army must be used.
-Starcraft is about speed. Play as fast as you possibly can.
-Know yourself and try to make it easy for yourself. If you cant handle reavers and psionic storms and dark archoons together, then dont. Do not micro unless you have time for it.
-Most important of all is to make a quick judgement in each upcoming fight if you should fight or retreat. Loosing a big battle almost always leads to defeat.
-To become really fast at BW you have to plan moves ahead while you are doing them. You must always know where your mouse should move after you are done with what you are doing. It is not how fast you move your hand but how fast you think that matters.
-Manage your time well. Always do the important stuff. It is not important to save a few units in late game if you could use the time to scout. It is not important to build a few extra probes if you have alot of minerals and not using your gateways.
When your army is big then controlling the army is the most important thing to do. seconly is to build in the gateways.
Never stack money like a bank.
-If you cant keep your money down you just have to build more gateways. It is not optimal but you must adept to your own speed.

This is my general tips. Specific strategies in this game won’t help you much.
I recommend protoss for slow players and terran for very fast players. very fast is above 200 actions / minute.
I hope this will help. Don’t give up, Brood war is the best game made for computers so far.

Sounds like you set your goals too high. Perhaps you need to do smaller projects that can be completed in time.

Topic: Kongregate / How to rate games

I guess this thread is not made to force everyone to rate in any specific way. Rate as you want. This discussion is for information only, for people that are intrested in how to rate or how other rate or how they want others to rate.
By the way I do like your way of rating. I rate just like that myself.

Blonde you are cute. I give you 5 stars.

Allright even if the rating is not made for comparison we still compare in our minds and the effekt of the rating is that the games on this site gets compared. Rating everything 5 can’t be good.

Balneger it is like a ladder so if you rate everything 5 all games will be rated equally bad. The whole point of rating is to compare games.

Topic: General Gaming / Best Video Game you've ever played

My favorite games are Starcraft Broodwar, Heroes of might and magic 3 and Serious sam 1.
Starcraft is a master piece and can not be compared to any other RTS. Starcraft is now more of a sport than a game. It wouldn’t suprise me if that game were still alive 10 years from now. I sure hope it will.

Thanks alot for the help! I will start with the free stuff first, sounds like a good idea.
I know almost no programming at all. I intend to learn as much as I can on my own. I intend to go to university and learn about game development later.

Billyfred I have considered rating like you do, I have not decided yet. I don’t think it’s terrible.
If the rating system works poorly I believe in your judjement rather then others.

When starcraft was quite new and I spent very much time in a cafe with computers. I had alot of friends there and we all loved starcraft and we loved to talk about it. Discuss strategies and stuff. Now most people sit at home with broad band. I miss the old time.

Thank you for your respons!
Intresting. Yes I agree and a rating can not be fully objective even if we wanted to.
I am curious. Are there any type of game that you really don’t like and if so, how would you think when you rated it?
I mean like sims for example. I hate sims and I would rather take care of my dish than play it. Should I rate such a game? If so, how should I proceed?

I see you have pointed out 5 important things in a game and fun is one of them. I want to clarify what I ment by fun. What I really mean is that I believe a game should be rated high if you like to use the game. Eye candy would for example make the game more enjoyable to use. Glitches would make it less enjoyable. I therefor believe we are considering the same details when we rate, am I right? Would you give a game high rating for graphic if the game was not at all enjoyable to play? I mean can the graphic in a game really be appreciated if noone wants to play it?

Please more opinions in this matter! Giving a fair rating is a quite complicated thing.

I believe that there are alot of players that rate bad games as 5 because they are immature and likes to trash things.

Topic: Kongregate / How to rate games

This thread is about how to rate a game.
I have noticed that the opinions are alot diffrent from person to person.
Some say that the rating should reflekt how much work the developer must have spent on the game. Some people seem to give 5/5 to be nice and other rate strategy games low because they prefer adventure games.

My opinion is this. A game should be rated high because it was fun. In my opinion the purpose of a game is to be fun. Rating a bad game high to be nice is not very nice to the developers that has acually made good games.
Rating adventure games low because you prefer action games is not fair either.
If you hate adventure games and give them 1/5 because of it then this will be very missleading for the people that acually do like adventure.
Giving high rating to someone just because it was there first game is also very missleading to the customers. Customers in this case are the players. I believe the rating on Kongretate are made to serve the customers rather than the programmers. If the rating are made for the customers then it will also give valueble information to the developers because then they will know what games are fun and not. Otherwise they won’t know because their shit game got high rating just because it was the first game.

I want to hear your opinions. For example: How do you rate and how should we rate? What is the purpose of the rating on Kongretate? If you could choose a purpose for the rating, what would it be?

I see. Perhaps I should start a company just to get flash:).
Thanks for your answer.
I have one more question. I am not asking for free stuff. I want to pay but not 600$. Cs4 is not nessesary. I want as good stuff as possible but for like 200$ something. Good stuff but not the best stuff. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Is flash cs4 the latest version and better than flash cs3? 600$ is just crazy are there no other price for a private person anywhere. I would pay like 200$ but 600$ is just crazy.

I just played crazy guitarr and so one 2 and 3. I think this game doesn’t work as an example because they have almost the same rating and in both games the people writing comments complain about lag and not the interface.
Perhaps players like easy games but we can not draw that conclusion based on crazy guitarr.
Unreal tournament is also hard to use as an example because big games must be relieased in the right time or they will fail miserably. What games was realised at the same time as UT3? I don’t know but if it was fear or WOW or something that would explain stuff.
I am not saying you are wrong but the examples doesn’t convice me at all.

I think this problem can be solved with psycology. Some games have different modes, easy, normal and hard. Normal is very hard and hard is impossible. I end up playing the easy mode and I feel like a noob.

The mode “easy” is just a name and could just as well be named “hard” so that “hard” could be named “freaking insane impossible hell”. A game should start out easy and gets harder over time. I doubt a game will get impopular just because it is hard in the end (if it is not way too hard). Ofcourse there are many players that likes an easy game.

All kinds of people exist, what is important is how many they are and how many that are different. Also some people are much more willing to pay than others. I wonder how many players that did like the 3rd music game better and if they would be willing to pay.

I believe challenge is alright if the player expect it to be hard. They must feel good and that is the goal, they don’t have to succeed. Perhaps a player can feel good even if they fail, at least I do. When I find a game that is really hard for me I assume that the game is very hard and not that I am a noob.

UT3 is different because its multiplayer. If I get beat by other players I will feel like a noob. There is a trick to make it easier but I don’t know if it will be enough. When random and chance is a part of the game the looser often thinks that he is haunted by bad luck and keeps playing. It doesn’t have to affekt the game much, it’s just psycology. The player is looking for a reason other than that he is a noob and we can give him that reason or reasons.

You say that players like easy games and I agree. But you believe a challenge is nessesary too yes?
You goal would not be just to make a game easy. What would your goal be considering challenge?

Mence if you want me to stop discussing this subject in your thread please tell me.

I get your point now Jabor, expectations. Theres gotta be a way to manipulate this so that an awesome game can be made without having to adept so much to expectations. I need to learn more about psycology. I can’t compare with myself because I really don’t have expectations. The only thing I would want in a game that didn’t follow expectations is information. If health is something that you are supposed to loose in a up side down game the player must be informed of this.

So what if a game was made with a very strange weapon but we find some logic to it. Why it should behave like it does. Perhaps the expectations could be altered if the player knew more about the gun.
In any case the gun I described is far from perfect without considering expectations. I just gave an example of what can be done. I believe a really intresting gun can be made that would follow expectations. My point is that I think it would be fun focusing more on 1 weapon than making alot of them. Analyse why this weapon would be fun to use and make it require alot of skill. Not just aim at your target and fire.

Thank you for the link Frogmanex.
Hmm if the customers ignore the gameplay and focus on the art I understand why the sellers also focus on the art. I think it is sad. I just thought of something. What if you make a game that is easy to learn and then you make a sequel that is hard to learn. People will know a little before they start and they will expect it to be fun if the first game was fun. I wonder if Sonny 2 will work. Sonny 2 is much more complicated than sonny. I haven’t played it much yet because I assumed that it would be very unbalanced with so many complicated skills. I should give it a fair try some day.

Degrees are so overated imo :(
I acually believe that the best people in many fields cared much less about their degree than the rest. They are intrested in learning intresting stuff, not getting a good degree in several unintresting subjects that will never come to any use. In school everyone learns to think like everyone else. It is hard to come up with something unique after that. Many great discoveries required some thinking outside the box.

Yes only programmer and no idea how to make a funny game sounds bad when there are only a few members of the team. Many flashgames are made by one person right? or are they? I intend to learn flash myself. Haven’t got around to it yet because I don’t know if I should get flash cs3 or cs4 or perhaps something entierly different.
I also saw that it cost alot. There has to be a cheaper way to get it but I want the real stuff, something that really works. I pay if I have to.
Programming is probably fun but I would rather figure out how to make funny games. It seems that it’s very hard to find a partner with only that skill. I think I must program games myself.

Have you ever heard of Jeremy and Pure Pwnage ? He has made a funny version of zero punktuation where he say what he thinks of all the new expensive games that has shit gameplay and gets boring after 3 days. It’s really fun :)

Topic: Game Programming / Game design in general

First of all it seems there is no room for this topic. If this is the programming part and not both. In my opinion game design should have it’s own part in the forum.

I want to find something out. A game contains art, music and story. This is not all because this also fits the description of a movie and there is a differance between a movie and a game.
Almost all games on kongregate have art, music and story but in my opinion they often lack the rest. The actual game, the rules or the concept.
They are either unbalanced, too easy or lack any kind of challenge all together.
What would you call this part that I am reffering to?
What is lacking in those games and who works with this?
A programmer often needs an artist and someone who can make music but who makes the game?
Is it normally the programmer who does it? Are there any professional workers in this field of expertise? Are they called lead designer in bigger company’s?
What is “game play”?

I don’t want to waste space in this forum with just a question just because I’m lazy and didn’t do alot of research. I also want to state my opinion.

My opinion is that “this” (whatever it is called) is ignored much to often. I wish games were more like games and less like movies.
When I was young games were games and didn’t have fancy graphic but they were very fun. Many of them are still fun.
I rather play games on kongregate than buy games in a store. Not because it’s cheaper but because it’s more fun. This is strange? How come the boring games cost alot of money and the funny games are for free? What do you think about this?

Topic: Collaborations / im makeing a game

yeah Jabor that was my thought exactly. In my mind I had a vision of a futuristic gun that could behave in any way we want because futuristic guns does not exist. Halo has these strange guns for example.
Besides, I wouldn’t care if a gun was unrealistic and I am not alone. There are alot of noobs who wants everything to be exactly as it should be in reality but there are already thousands of sucky games that they can choose from. Good gamers have to look really hard to find 1 good game so if someone succeeded in making a good game they would have plenty of customers and some of them would be willing to pay extra for it because good games barely exist.

A game without choices is not a game at all.

Topic: Collaborations / im makeing a game

Make a shooter with a really advanced gun, (in my opinion shooters are action games).
Guns normally have the following facts.
They shoot a bullet that goes straight. Each time you klick it does this. It has a range, a damage and a max rate of fire. Also the bullets have a speed and you have either a fixed number of ammo or infinit. Instead of making the gun more fun most games have several boring guns to choose from instead.

If you think about it this is quite dull. A gun could in theory work in any way we want. For example, what if the reload were faster when the ammo was low. or slower. What if we had energy instead of ammo that rechardged. What if we could affekt the range damage or the eliptic curve for the bullet with how long we choose to press the firebutton before we reliease. How long time it takes between your fire button klicks could also affekt the bullet.
the gun could do more damage or shorter range. Perhaps higher dps but less efficient with energy.

I would like to see a game like this in combination with action. Many shooter games is about being a coward and hide behind stuff but in serious sam for example you are locked up in a room and surrounded by enermies wich is much more fun. I don’t expect anyone to do this in 3D but you get the idea.
Instead of focusing on the AI of the opponent you could make alot of different enermies that behaves differently. This will create a challenge even if there are almost no AI. Besides this will give the player a clue what to do instead of being clueless when they approach a new enermy with new AI all the time.

So basically what I am suggesting is a shooter where it matter how often you press fire and for how long and for how long you wait until you press fire again. Also it matter how close you are to the enermy and you also have to consider that the bullet travel in an eliptic cure. We could add much more than this if we want. What time it is on the ingame clock and what enviroment you are in at the moment. The more we add the more complex it will become but a noob can still shoot with it without having to read a wall of text.
