The 30% extra Kreds is when you use a gamestop gift card to purchase Kreds, you get 30% more than you normally would. It’s not that you get free Kreds when you purchase a gamestop gift card.

It depends. If you use Internet Explorer 8, different tabs show up as different items in the list (probably because they are each their own process), so you can mute one tab and not another. I don’t know how other browsers behave.

Topic: Kongregate / My solution to the comment rating system

For the most part, I think the current comment system adds little (basically nothing) to the games. Sometimes (though not very often) there will be a comment that contains a helpful suggestion to the developer, but mostly it’s just crap like “needs badges” or “great game” and the occasional walkthough on point and click games. So as a user playing the game, I don’t feel like there is anything I get from the comments. No matter what changes are made, I don’t see that improving. What is there that I’m missing out on by having useless comments shown to me? From what I can see it’s just other useless comments. If there’s a bug that needs to be fixed by the developer, there’s a link to report a bug.

But, what the comments section does give, is a place for people to write down dumb shit. Instead of creating a forum post over some stupid thing, people can just leave it as a comment. By restricting access to the comments section, you’re forcing people who want to say stupid things to do it somewhere else. And since we have enough stupid posts in the forums already (blame gamestop for the sky falling posts, stalking staff and mod posts, 20 posts about ads, etc. and that’s just in the kong forum. In fact, of the 19 non-sticky posts on the first page right now, 4 have been locked.), anything that might bring more stupid posts here (like badge petition threads) is not a good thing in my opinion.

If commenting on a game isn’t much, then why bother to restrict it?

Topic: Kongregate / Aren't you people glad that monthly MMO games' badges is over?

If someone made a poll asking what people hate more, MMO badges or your complaint threads, I’m pretty sure MMOs would lose.

Or might come up with something to make you background for your account cooler. Ten dollars! Think about it. (I was joking about the first one.)

Most people who work at any job are people who want money. That’s what employment is. You work, they give you money.

Topic: Kongregate / Suggestions

Another solution would be make only level 10 or more kongregate users post comments, post replys to topic (not chat, chatting would be fine since 90% of times there’s a mod watching). Many spam accounts are level one.

This would be horid for the MMOs. There are scores of people who play games like Caesary, Heroes of Gaia, etc. who don’t play much aside form those games and so have quite low levels. Each of these games has a forum and not being able to post on the forums prevents them from entering any discussions about the game, posting on suggestion/bug threads, complaining about things going wrong, etc.

Any solution that prevents legitimate users from using the forums with ease is a bad solution.

Topic: Kongregate / Major Imbalance in Badge Difficulties

Because it’s perfectly fine to badge the same game every week just because it’s rated highly.

It seems pretty easy to test the API on these compared to other games. Hmmmm, let me beat the game. Did it send in the info? Yep, good. Okay, now let me reload and make sure it resends it so that if I was disconnected when I beat it I’ll still get the badge. Hey, that’s working, new badge is up. Seems like significantly less time than almost any other badge. And if this is all the time that greg has to make badges at the moment because he has other job duties to do, then hey at least there was one badge instead of none.

Topic: Lord Of Ages / My thoughts on the game

So I’ve been playing the game for about a day now and I have some comments to share with the developers.

  1. Coin – Coin is too rare for me right now. My growth is being held back because I don’t have enough coin to buy upgrades or troops. The only ways to get coins are through quests and attacking, but there is not enough available through these methods. This brings me to my next point.
  2. Wilderness – The quantity of wilderness available for attacking is too low. One of my quests is to attack 20 wilderness. There are only maybe 4 areas that are 10 minutes travel time per direction. To get 20 I’ll have to travel at least 30 – 45 minutes in each direction for some of the last ones.
  3. Heroes – My heroes started with 6 energy. After spending this it hasn’t come back after 12 hours. Does it ever come back? Heroes should regain energy when they sit idle. Another problem with heroes is that the game will not let me have more than 3. I get the message “You have reached the system limit for total numbers of hero or equipment. Please clear some and try again later.” What does this even mean? Is there any way for me to be able to have more heroes? Is it based on my character’s level? The error message needs to be more descriptive.
  4. Scouts – I scouted a town that had 0 population and 0 coins. Yet I lost 5/10 scouts that I sent. The town was empty. There were no units, no buildings, no people. How could I have possibly lost scouts from this?

I might have more to add as I keep playing.

Look at the number of people earning the badges. 15k have the upgrade powers medium, 12k have the campaign medium, 2.5k have the gauntlet hard. Seems the badge levels were spot on.

Topic: Kongregate / Idea - You Make The Badge

Wizards of the Coast runs a promotion (for lack of a better word) called “You Make the Card” where players of Magic: the Gathering get to create cards that will be used in the game. With that in mind, I was thinking some sort of “You Make the Badge” could work here on Kongregate. It would obviously have to be supported by – and probably run by – the admins. (From now on, I will use the term “greg” to mean “the admins”, for ease of typing)

First, a game must be selected. This could be decided by greg, or he could come up with a list of games with good working APIs and good potential for badges of varying difficulty, and then the community would vote on which one they wanted to make badges for.

Once a game is selected, info about what stats the API submits are posted somewhere, and based on these, users are asked to submit ideas for a good easy badge, including what the relevant API info should be. greg will search through these and select the best ones (~4 – 6 ideas). The community then gets to vote on which one they want the easy badge to be.

I need to stress here that the possible games should have good badge potetnial. A generic tower defense game with 20 levels and only submitting stats for highest level completed and score would be awful for this. Cursed Treasure Don’t Touch My Gems would have had potential because of the upgrade system and the star ratings for the different levels.

(Any issues of people not liking the gameplay aside) [Visible] III comes to mind as a game that might also have good potential (assuming the API gets implemented), since there are in game achievements, a campaign mode that tracks time, deaths, and coins, and also a gauntlet mode which provides challenging levels.

Once the requirements are selected, people are asked to submit name ideas for the badge. Again greg selects the best ones and the community gets to vote for the one they like best. Possibly repeat for badge images, although it would make more sense for this to just have voting with some images selected by greg.

The process is then repeated for a medium and then a hard badge.

I estimate it would take approximately 1 week for each round of submitting and voting, so 10 weeks in total. This is a long time to make badges for a game, but it would get the community involved in a way that they haven’t really been able to up until now, unless they happen to have been around when greg has posted a “should I do x or y for badges on this game” thread.

The people who submit the winning ideas for the various things would be mentioned somewhere on a “you make the badge” page somewhere on kong. In the case where multiple people submit essentially the same ideas, greg will randomly select one.

Possible implementations include (not sure on the feasibility of any of these with kongregates back end):

  • submissions via e-mail (e-mail to youmakethebadge@kongregate.com with certain subejct line), some sort of parser to go through it and collate it into a database for easy perusal
  • create a flash “game” where people can submit their ideas to something serverside
  • a flash “game” could also be used for voting
  • standard radio button voting
  • something like collabs, where people get to rate each suggested idea from 1 – 5 and the top rated one wins (this should not be used for all the suggestions, only once greg has decided on a small number, since early suggestions would have a significant advantage over later ones)

A couple of possible modifications (again, not sure on the feasability of implementing some of these):

  • In order to vote in a particular week you have to get a ticket by completing a challenge from a previous week
  • To make things shorter, ask for people to submit everything at once: badge name, requirments, and image.
  • Give some kreds to each person whose idea makes it to the “elimination round”, and a few more to the winner of each.
  • Find a developer who wants to be part of this that would list the winners somewhere in the credits of the game, or name characters after them, or in the case of an MMO, give them free in game “cash”, or …?
  • I suppose instead of badges you could let people vote on kongai card designs, but I doubt people would care about that as much

So, I guess the important question for now is, would people be interested in participating in something like this?

Topic: Kongregate / Kongregate needs more 'Social'

Kong already has several social aspects. There is an integrated level sharing feature where you can share levels you make with other kong users. There’s collabs, where you can “meet and mingle with some of the biggest names on Kongregate.” There are also scores of multiplayer games where users interact with each other all the time. When I played Heroes of Gaia, my guild was like a family. There’s also the game chat windows for certain games, and just the regular chats, where lots of social interactions happen.

That’s not to say there shouldn’t be more social things on kong, but if you want more social things, maybe you should suggest some ideas. That way, people can discuss them (and be social!) and the admins will have some ideas of what else people want from kong.
