Topic: Kongregate / Reccomendation for Developer chat room.

Originally posted by Frogmanex:

I don’t know about a developer-only chat, but I’d adore a developer-oriented chat. That is, I have at least 3 aspiring developers in my room who are always talking to one another, sharing ideas and asking questions. Being a developer myself, I participate in those discussions a lot, but oftentimes people get tired of seeing codebits and programming language in chat when they’d rather discuss something more general-knowledge.

The developer forums are wonderful when you have technical questions, but sometimes you just have simple questions you want to ask your peers instead of getting super-technical answers in the forums, which can be super-intimidating for new developers.

If this were to happen, I’d propose a development-geared chat room that allowed and encouraged programming chat. Regular chat rooms aren’t too conducive to that kind of talk and the Kong Labs chats are about the Kong Labs. Not to mention you have to have those games loaded in order to use those chats…

I am with Fromanex 100%, you hit the nail right on the head. As for the comments about “button games”, yea I know they suck, but it is where a lot of kids start when learning flash / actionscript. I personally encourage anyone who is willing to spend time learning and asking questions. A developer-oriented chat on kong seems like a really cool idea.

Topic: Kongregate / Chat Room Request: Developers / Collaboration

Originally posted by Yishan:

I think you’re being extremely judgmental of Kongregate chatrooms and community. You will not be silenced for asking such questions in a chat room. I have asked similar questions to my friends, regulars of my servers, and moderators, who have been more than happy to help out. From what you’re implying in the last few sentences, users without a developer icon are not “like minded individuals?” Just because you have a blue D next to your username does not mean that you are the only individual in that one chatroom that is willing to help out with the development in a game.

I didn’t say I was “Silenced”. Please read my post before replying. I said “you get silence”. lol.

And yes, people are generally less than helpful when it comes to dev questions in general chat rooms. If you do get help, it is far and between. Don’t get me wrong, any help or even good conversation created in any room is much appreciated.

Also, where do you get that when I say “like-minded people” that I am only talking about people with a “Blue D”? I don’t even know what that is. Please stop jumping to outlandish conclusions. As far as being critical.. I am just speaking from personal experience, is that against the rules? I have a feeling future rebuttals will be just as incoherent and counter progressive.

The idea of a dev chat is simple, and obviously warranted. I know you don’t see the potential, my only hope is that someone on the Kong team does.

Yishan – I have to completely disagree with you on all fronts. In fact, I’m pretty surprised that a dev chat isn’t already a standard on such a collaborative website. I know that if I want it and have looked for it, others have too. I just see plenty of rooms with oddball names, whats the harm in naming one for people who want to find others interested in development?

We have collaborations and Flash programming forums here which provide multiple oppurtunities. I don’t think so that it’s necessary to actually make a chat room. As said before, if you want, I can link you all to multiple websites that are free and have codes and actually teach you and help you understand line by line of code. As MrSpontaneous, theoretically, it might sound productive, but I don’t see how its going to be used properly. Developers looking for music and art can simply browse through the collabs offered by Kongregate, view and listen to them, and then contact them via whisper and email.

As for beta testing your games to be, I’ve found that just asking your friends on Kongregate or regulars that you can trust to just download your .swf from Rapid Share or some other third party website. We really don’t need to go out of the way for collabs, I’ve also found from personal experience that just scanning through the music and art collabs and just contacting the maker via whisper is effective – no need to make a specific room.

I understand where you are coming from, as I’ve seen sometimes collaboration forums are sometimes empty, but making a chatroom just isn’t necessary. :P

Anyone can google search for actionscript, flash, music tutorials, and paint brushes. The idea isn’t simply about code or finding tutorials on how to do things. It would be about conversing with your peers and sharing ideas in real-time.

I encourage you to look at the current list of chat room titles, and then tell me one with this purpose isn’t necessary. Like many developers have already told me, it would be their main room to hang out in. There is more to this that isn’t being recognized.

Do I really need to make a forum post to say “Anyone have any good ground textures?” or “What’s your favorite bass setup in fruity loops?”. These questions are too minor to create a new thread. At the same time, if you try to ask those questions in an ordinary chat room, you get silence. I would hope to think that in a room of like-minded individuals, there would be some kind of answer. :p

So is this request thread sufficient for advancing the idea? Do I need to e-mail the kong higher ups?

If you like the idea of a ‘Developers Chat’, lets rally behind it!

Topic: Kongregate / Chat Room Request: Developers / Collaboration

Hello Kongregate,

I was just talking to a chat mod in the ‘Area 51’ room about the prospect of a ‘Developers Chat Room’. She thought it was a great idea and everyone else I mention it to agrees.

It would be a great place to talk with like-minded people who are interested in flash game development. Also; artists, musicians, writers, and programmers could login to chat with their peers and find new game projects.

I know that Kongregate already has a forum for collaboration, but some questions require immediate response or may be too small to make a new forum topic. Plus it would be cool to just hang out with other people working on games.

Some potential names for the room:
Game Development
Develop & Collaborate
Etc.

I look forward to seeing what you guys think!

Topic: General Gaming / Modern Warfare 2: New Trailer

WaW is on par with MW in my opinion. I hope MW2 doesn’t do anything to mess my favorite game franchise. More than likely IW will take the series up another notch and I will be COD’d out for another 2 years.

Topic: Collaborations / Sexy artist looking for a sexy team

Hey Akurus!

Your artwork is amazing! We are currently working on a game called “Invasion From Hell II: Fire Down Under”. It is a top-down strategy game developed in flash. Although it is a flash based game, we can utilize any type of graphic images for buildings, soldiers, etc. We have two threads going here on kongregate.. one being our request for artwork (http://www.kongregate.com/forums/8/topics/33277), and the other is for beta testers (http://www.kongregate.com/forums/8/topics/34059). I will send you a recent beta so you can get an understanding of the game and how the graphics will be designed. If you are interested please email me or reply here. My email is: ryanscottwright@gmail.com.
Thanks!

Topic: Collaborations / 3D animator here ready to help where i can..!

Hey FredeP!

We are very interest in looking at some of your work. We are currently looking for a 3D animator to do some models of buildings, helicopters, a vehicle, soldiers, and demons from a top-down overhead perspective. The game itself is very close to completion and you would be able to see your 3D models in gameplay as they are completed.

For more information on our game, please check out this thread: http://www.kongregate.com/forums/8/topics/33277

Thank you!

Topic: Collaborations / Storywriter desperatley looking for work

I am currently looking for someone to help me come with ideas in writing out my game story. Some of the story is already written, and the basic “skeleton” of the plot and timeline is complete. What I need is for someone to work with my on interesting ideas for dialog during the games cutscenes.

The game is called “Klown”
Most of the games cutscenes will consist of dialog between our main character who is dead Clown (Rick) and Satan. The game is to be adult rated, which means it contains language and adult content. If you are not comfortable with such content, do not reply. Also, I would just like to comment that this is a very serious project and I have been working on for several months. Most of the core gameplay engine is complete and I am now moving on to graphics, music, and story. I plan on making a forum post for my game with various requests for people in the flash scene to if they would like to help make this game even better. I am only waiting until I have a new beta build with some more of the games final graphics. If you show genuine interest in writing for the game, I will send you a beta of the game along with the story blocking I have already written.

Thank you for your time reading up to this point.

Topic: Collaborations / Making PSP game

I wish you the best of luck. It IS VERY possible to run flash content on a PSP system. Just do the best job you can and only listen to people who really know what they are talking about.

Good luck my friend.
