Topic: Kongregate / [Event] Come celebrate 100K games on Kongregate! ROUND TWO!

I must confess to being disappointed. The impression I got from the banner was that I would be able to vote for my favourite game, but I ended up having to vote for the staff members’ favourite games. How on Earth did Factory Balls 2 make the cut, but nothing from the Shift series? All four of them have medium badges and none of them has been in a quest before.

Topic: Swarm Simulator / Nexus V - possible in less than 8 hours?

You have 8000 energy after building the fourth nexus. The optimal number of lepidoptera, independent of the mutagen you’ve put into them, is sqrt(50D – 250000) – 500, where D is the energy increase required for the fifth nexus, so we get an optimal number of 572 lepidoptera. If the mutagen give you 100% improvement in energy production, this gives a time of 30905 seconds, or 8:35:05.

But taking into account the point about being better off having more lepidoptera when you buy the fifth nexus, and since you’ll need to spend at least 350k energy after buying the fifth nexus (including the energy spent to actually ascend), it’s actually better to buy the maximum of 800 immediately, and the maximum of 1000 immediately after the fifth nexus. And in fact those aren’t even optimal values, but calculations on the basis of two button presses are much easier than assuming you can hover over the “Buy 1 lepidoptera” button for a few hours.

Topic: Kongregate / Flash on Linux Chromium

I apologise to the Kong staff: it turns out that the problem was actually on my end. When I rebooted, apparently Mint overwrote a Chromium config file and effectively uninstalled the Flash plugin.

For the benefit of anyone else who has the same problem, /usr/share/linuxmint/common/artwork/chromium/default gets copied over /etc/chromium-browser/default, so if you’ve added . /usr/lib/pepflashplugin-installer/pepflashplayer.sh to the latter you need to instead add it to the former.

Oops, I thought I had. If I don’t hear anything in a few days I’ll cross-post it.

Topic: Kongregate / Flash on Linux Chromium

A recent change to the Kong site has a “Your version of Adobe Flash is no longer supported by Kongregate” message appearing at the top of most pages and in place of the games. Looking at the JavaScript, it seems to be checking for version 10.0.0 or later. I’m running Chromium (specifically 37.0.2062.120 (Built on Ubuntu 12.04, running on LinuxMint 13)), which has its own Flash player instead of the Adobe one.

Would you be so kind as to adapt the version check so that I’m still able to play Flash games on Kong?

More options aren’t always better. There’s some interesting research which has been done on it. (That link is really just a starting point for reading).

I don’t often miss the badge of the day, but I’m a Linux user and this time I have no choice. What I really don’t understand is why Kong would allow some new technology which probably very few people had installed before, but point blank refuses to allow Java.

Topic: Kongregate / "Hey! Are you running an ad blocker?"

I got the message even though I don’t run an ad-blocker. I do, however, use my hosts file to block certain ad providers. To get on that blacklist, they need to come to my attention, and the main way they do that is by taking ages to load and blocking access to the page for long enough for me to get bored, look at the status bar, and write down the domain name. If Kong wants me to see the ads, all you need to do is stop outsourcing to incompetent third parties and serve text or images directly from your own servers.

Topic: Technical Support / 403 Forbidden on chat

The problem seems to have fixed itself in the past 7 hours, so I’m inclined to label it provisionally as a temporary routing issue.

Topic: Technical Support / 403 Forbidden on chat

Chat isn’t loading at all (which is a nuisance when it comes to getting badges, if nothing else). I used the browser dev tools to discover that chat.kongregate.com is returning me a 403 Forbidden.

I’ve tried logging out and in again in case it was a cookie issue, and I’ve tried doing a DNS lookup from another computer and editing my /etc/hosts in case it was a single Akamai host having problems. Before editing /etc/hosts the domain was resolving to 212.106.219.177. I’ve also tried 204.0.5.56 without success.

Any ideas?

Topic: Kongregate / Two challenges per week?

The Current Challenges page says:

“Each week Kongregate will feature two time-limited Challenges that you can complete to win prizes like points, Kongai cards and raffle entries. These challenges are featured on the front page and start every Monday and Thursday evening.”

There haven’t been two challenges for several weeks now. Is this an intentional change to policy which you forgot to mention in a news post and update in the Challenges page, or are you just lacking the time to set the challenges up?

I suspect the latter, given that at time of posting there’s no current challenge, but it would be nice to have confirmation.
