Well, I now realized I don’t really need to worry about non-rectangular hitboxes… Just need to make the player’s ship a pair of overlapping ones (one for the fuselage, the other for the wings).

Umm… no, I can’t easily translate it. I’m just learning flash, and foolishly decided to use AS2. Maybe I’ll just switch to AS3.

Sorry to revive an old post, but this was the first one I found when I searched for “hit detection”…

I did some searching on collision detection at other websites, and found a pretty good method (just haven’t tried it yet). It involves creating a temporary bitmap of the intersection of any bounding boxes, using one of the offending objects as one color, then adding the other object with the “difference” method, then checking to see if any cyan exists (which shows up if there’s an overlap between the two different items.)
