Topic: Serious Discussion / If You could choose where your taxes went...

I’d want my tax dollars to support mental health awareness. I feel many people in America are uneducated about many psychological disorders, and because of this many go untreated.

Topic: Serious Discussion / What is it like being gay

Off-Topic: I love how so many straight guys are answering.

On-topic: In general, I assume being gay is like being straight. It’s the specifics that are different. Meaning that we all have stereotypes pushed on us, but the stereotypes are different.

P.S. I happen to be quite flamboyant, and it is just who I am. Why can’t I act over the top? I enjoy it, and I’m having fun.

Topic: The Arts / Is fashion art?

The fashion program has a lot more art classes than business classes. It’s got everything from tailoring to weaving, and fashion illustration to classes focusing on creating your own textiles.

Topic: The Arts / Is fashion art?

I recently chose to major in Fashion Design at college, and the school I go to wants to move the fashion classes out of the Arts center and into the business building. I feel this move is unwarranted because I think the fashion design is an art form. What do the people of Kong think?

Something can be wrong even if it’s a positive thing. Like something designed to so something specific, but ends up having a side effect that is good. The original design would still be wrong though.

As for proving it to be a mental illness, it’s in the DSM I think it’s called. It’s classified a legitimate mental illness.

It’s called Gender Identity Disorder, it is in the DSM-IV, and I’m pretty sure treatment is therapy, hormones, and eventually CORRECTIVE surgery, but I will have to double check.

Pretty much nailed it, Vannie. Since we cannot change an entire brain, and turn a person into a different person (for a barrage of moral reasons, as well as technological) it is easier to change the body.

It might be easier right now to change the body, but in the future I think we can develop a drug or treatment that can cure these conflicted feelings in these people, curing the damage or imbalance they have in their brain.

Thus, no need for physical surgeries that mutilate the body in a attempt to pretend to be the other sex. I think people with this mental illness understand and know deep down that no matter how skilled the surgeons, or how effective the drugs, when they came out of their mothers, they were born a sex that god gave them. No amount of drugs or surgery can change that physically, unless they can go back in time and abort themselves before they were ever born into the sex they feel is wrong.

I do think these people have the right to exist and to try to understand things, but they are indeed mentally ill and need the treatments that come along with that, for the rest of their lives. I don’t dislike or fear these people, I pity them. I am so fortunate that I was not born with such a severe mental illness that my brain and body did not and do not ‘match’!

As a person with a psychological disorder (Bipolar II) who will most likely be on medication the rest of his life, I’m going to say that I don’t wish it on anybody. If there was a surgery that could make it go away I would jump at the chance.

Also, how is it that a sex change mutilates the body, but elective cosmetic surgery is fine?

We need to develop some sort of treatment for these mentally disturbed people so they don’t have to go out and pretend to be something via crude surgeries and excessive hormone treatments.

did you know that pretty much all treatments for psychological disorders are based on a THEORY of how the brain works, since we don’t know for sure?

I really don’t see why any would have a big deal with it, its really no different than any kind of surgery to change the body. As in plastic surgery to alter ones face or breast implants and so on. The only difference is that people who undergo a sex change tend to do it for deep emotional reasons. All the power to them.

It is, to change the size of someones breast and change sex is a huge difrence.

you’re right, there is a huge difference. People who change their sex do it because, in some cases, it is literally killing them to be trapped in the wrong body. People who get breast implants do it because they can.

Vannie, sorry I mean Omega, I’d like to address one part of your post specifically.

I can’t ‘get’ these sex change feelings. You CANT change your sex – it is one of the few things that are set in stone.

Just because technology and medicine can simulate being another sex does not mean it should be done. What is next, we allow people who feel furry to get operations to look like furries, and call them a furry on their I.D.?

Actually, nothing about an organic body is ultimately set in stone. Whether or not we have the full ability, is very different to whether or not it is possible. Fundamentally, no, I can see no long-term impossibilities about being able to give a person the body they desire, whatever that is.

As to the furry part, well that’s a different topic, but ultimately, anthropomorphism is fundamentally possible, yes, and I do know a few people who would be interested in customising parts of their body after animals, if it was possible under our technology to do it.

That is entirely their choice to do so. If that change gives them different abilities, a note on their ID seems fine.

And your OK with perverting the base human? Also what is a Vannie? I admit I am not hip to all the LBGT lingo.

So when someone is born with a life threatening genetic defect, they should be allowed to just die without trying to fix it?

ETA: In my mind a transgendered person is born with a genetic defense, their brain identifies as a gender that their body doesn’t match.

As a gay man who has friends who are transgendered I can tell you probably don’t know any.

1) 1/3 of all teen suicides are committed by LBGT teens. That isn’t just a challenge.

2) They have done studies showing that a part of the brain in people who are gay is different from those in people who are straight.

3) People don’t just go and get a sex change, they go through years of therapy and treatment.

4) What is wrong with someone getting an operation that could potentially give them a reason to live and stop suicidal thoughts?

why did I convert?
Centering my religious beliefs around being a good person and having them fit what I want/need out of life seemed pretty good to me.

Some people claim to be pagans but do not understand it just as SaintDogbert said. There are those kids who think its cool, and just want to be able to say they are a witch.

it is not an internet phenomenon, Pagans are considered to be those who worship one of the Goddess religions. That is how true pagans define it.

Topic: Serious Discussion / pagans are not satanists

Back to the topic, Pagans define themselves as a religion that believes in a main goddess, which is almost the only constant in the religion.

edit: I would also like to point out that when defining paganism the definition should be by people who consider themselves pagan. Not every non-christian religion should be considered pagan.
