Topic: Kongregate / Okay... that's it... get rid of that annoying RATE THIS GAME popup that overtakes the chat room!

Alright a couple things:
Nice summary of what has been going on hamuka.

Well, Val, I don’t really know much of anything about the future of the rate-this-game popup either, in fact, who does? But at least we can make projections. And I think I can give a good guess as to how the popup will affect the future of kong.

1.If people get annoyed with the popup, and start giving games bad ratings because they really haven’t decided yet if it is good or not, then when they leave to go play another game, they might forget to change their rating. Then a popup will appear there and the same process will continue on. Not everyone is willing to rate a game after playing it for a few minutes. Some of us actually like to enjoy the game first, so we can give an honest rating. Trust me on this one, we aren’t hurting the developers, nor our recommendations, nor the games here. The feature is.

2. This is going to sound kind of strange, but when I go to play a game I have already rated, I don’t want to be asked to rate it again, considering that that is impossible. I know, how silly of me, right? If I recall how the rating system works, you can only rate an individual game once. Sure, you can always change your rating, but I don’t want to have to be asked to rate a game I just rated days, weeks, maybe even months ago. So, I can already verify that it is a very flawed feature.

3. Alright, picture this: You are on the sidewalk with an old friend, having a nice little chat. Then, suddenly, a popup…let’s say a rate-this-game pop-up, appears right in front of you. Now, you are unable to communicate with that person unless you find a way to get ride of it, or try to circumvent it in someway, so you can continue to carry on your conversation.

Okay, that was a ridiculous scenario. But basically, this popup is destroying chat. But Val, if you were chatting with somebody here, and all the sudden, you were dragged away from the chat room to rate a game, wouldn’t you be a little vexed? Even the slightest? That is what this feature is doing. It might be shocking, yes, but some people don’t want their chat to be obscured by a little popup.

Alright, let’s summarize.

  • Popup obscures chat.
  • Popup occasionally asks you to rate a game you have already rated.
  • Popup asks Kong+ members to rate beta-testing games.
  • Popup can frustrate players, which makes them leave bad ratings. This can hurt that players recommendations, as well as hurt the developers, and the ratings of the developers’ game.
  • Not everyone is prepared to rate a game after playing it for a few minutes.
  • Players might not be leaving incredibly honest ratings on games anymore, and you guys can’t help it since you can’t even see our ratings in the first place.
  • So, hope we got all that down. What bothers me the most though is that, not only are you guys hurting the players with this feature, but consider the developers too. Some people might be rating down their games, just because of the stupid feature, and it could end up being enough bad ratings to totally crush some games, or have their ratings drop tremendously. Then what will happen? Well, when a developer sees their game get awfully ratings, not every developer thinks “eh, oh well, it’s just one game, I can bust out an even better one!”. I think that developers might actually stop posting games here, because everyone will be down rating their games, or they might stop making games all together. This last paragraph here is really more of a guess, since I don’t believe many developers would just stop after seeing bad results from their games, but still, it is possible that some might pack their bags and go. Then Kongregate might lose some good developers.

Again, that last statement about developers leaving or stopping game production altogether is just a guess for the long run of the future of kong, as I said I would mention above. But really, I worry about Kongregate’s future. Will this feature get rid of some good developers and players? I think so.

But serious administrators and programmers of Kongregate, take a hint. Nobody likes this crummy feature.

Well, not every new game should be badged. Like Bluji said, not every new game is playable, and every game having badges would make the badge system seem pointless, because the most ridiculous of games would get badged. And now, with Greg’s 3.7 rating or higher policy, some great games are getting badged. He can’t badge them all.

Also, not every new game, or just games in general, should be badged. Do you really want to see some Mambo game or Sploder level (sometimes Sploder levels coming in daily), that many people upload to kong, get badged?

Topic: Kongregate / I missed a shiny kongpanion!

    Two Things:

    1. Shiny Kongpanions, and Kongpanions just in general, don’t really do anything yet, or may never serve any function or purpose, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about (unless, of course, you really like collecting them).

    2. It has been suggested before to have a throwback week, so people could go back and earn missed Kongpanions/Shiny Kongpanions. Jmtb02 thinks it’s a good idea (as he said during the live event), but as of right now, there are no current plans for a way to earn missed Kongpanions or Shiny Kongpanions.

    Topic: Kongregate / Suggestions

People (like myself) have been complaining a bit about some of Kongregate’s newest features (e.g.: Notable Games Section, rate-the-game popup) and I think there needs to be a survey so we can vote on what’s working and what’s not, or a direct place where we can comment on what new features we don’t think are working (I know, it costs a pretty penny for some of those new features, but there needs to be a better place where we can give our input and express our opinions of the new features).

Let’s take a little peek at the “Notable Games” Section:

The red boxes show games that are MMOs or pay-to-wins (Astroflux, Magic Barrage-Bitferno, Brave Tales, BloodRealm, Pirates: Tides of Fortune, Goodgame Empire, Ashtaria, Kamicat Football, Nightbanes).
The green boxes show games that are platformers (Elephant Quest, You Have To Burn The Rope).
The blue box shows games that aren’t related to the others or to each other, so they are miscellaneous (Burrito Bison Revenge, Gateway II, Sydney Shark).

After Kongregate surveyed 0 players, they decided multiplayer games were some of the most notable of games. Okay, that sounds like a load of crap. I honestly don’t think that many people consider MMOs and multiplayer games notable (well sure, some do, but really, that many?). The game spotlights on the homepage is by far enough, I don’t think we need to be showcasing anything else there.

Honestly, these games don’t look very notable. And when you say “Notable”, by what standard? Ratings? Plays? Overall quality of the game? Lots of people added it to their favorites or playlists? Notable can be a very vague term, and this is a good example of it being so (this was kind of already asked by Silentcook, but it is still a good question).

So, Kong, if you could get rid of this totally useless and idiotic feature, and bring back Recently Played Games to the homepage, that would be great.

Also, until I find out what the purpose of Notable Games is, or what it stands for, I am just going to assume it is some scheme for Kongregate to make more money.

Yes, the popup is incredibly bothersome. It doesn’t encourage me to rate a game more, it just makes me want to play games I haven’t rated yet less. I’ll rate a game, but you can’t ask me to rate it the minute after I start the game.
