Topic: Kongregate / It's time for the forums to change.

Personally, I would agree with adv0catus. I think the forums do need an overhaul. I see many, many long posts with issues using Textile… along with the completely linear fashion of the forums making conversation difficult to separate. Giving topics flags would also be helpful in some respects, eg. mid-thread “tangent” flags with that part split off from the main conversation.

A forum that can do this is ftlog. It may not have been updated in a long time but it does the job quite well actually. Easy management and free forums make the job easier.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why fixing a mistake mid sentence is bad, and makes you a slower typer.

As with many systems – such as Dragon’s NaturallySpeaking et al., speech recognition systems are designed to learn and adapt to the speaker’s voice and intonation. This allows for the software to become more accurate and faster to process our speech. However, speech has many more nuances than written prose – so shouldn’t it be more difficult for a computer to understand the complexity of natural speech rather than our own writing?

In a contextual sense, perhaps speech may be easier to recognise – mere signal comparisons are easier to perform than having to distinguish grammatical and contextual nuances – however, it could be easier for a word processor to understand patterns that are pre-established – patterns that conform to our usual grammatical and contextual rules, such as subject-verb-object in English, and act accordingly.

Take, for instance, the sentence: “The apple ate the worm.” Anyone could see that an inanimate object (fruit in this case) is unable to eat an animal – the subject is inappropriate for the verb and object to make sense. This could be pre-defined or learnt via a similar method to what is used with speech-to-text applications. By breaking the contextual argument down in to several elements, it becomes easier for the processor to understand how the words fit together; eg. inanimate objects cannot perform actions without the aid of an outside agency (“the bowling ball knocked down the pins” could be a counter-example, but these could be specifically defined").

The problem is not with Kongregate itself, it’s with the shady ADVERTISING COMPANIES that choose the adverts FOR THEMSELVES. Someone needs to make a sticky saying that Kongregate does not contain a form of malware directly – blame AdChoices and Google.

Topic: Kongregate / Break the 4 Badge Limit Per Game

Having read the thread, I can see two main points of view:

1) 5+ badges on a game is good because of the high amount of content/challenges that have been included within the game. 2) 5+ badges are a bad idea because of: a) the high amount of badges already, b) a lack of games, c) lack of emotion in achieving badges.

To get the best of both worlds, how’s about my idea:

The community gets to vote for a single game with 4 badges to get a special fifth badge, chosen by a majority of the community. (By this, I do not mean the flawed First Past The Post, I mean Alternative Vote – vote for preferences, numbering candidates – google it if you don’t know). This would allow the community to have a choice in what they feel is best for the community as a whole and also give them a choice, unlike now where Greg/whoever handles badges has the final say.

End result:

1) Happy community
2) Happy GameStop via happy marketing (via having a happy community, this gives people an incentive to get more people to visit the website = more revenue to GameStop).

Topic: Kongregate / back yard monsters.. badged... wtf greg

And then Anti-Idle: The Game is an idle game, of course, being one of the more robust games on Kongregate. </sarcasm> If the idea of a game is to wait, it’s boring. Anti-Idle has more features and encourages you to NOT idle. So where’s the badges?

Backyard Monsters doesn’t even have a working freaking tutorial. I have to enlarge the screen every time I click on a 22 INCH WIDESCREEN monitor for the tutorial. I don’t see how that gets badges when an actual game with virtually zero bugs as far as I can tell, appropriate features and actual fun doesn’t.

Do pray tell.

Topic: Kongregate / has a virus

I don’t know why you people care about some stupid claim of Kongregate handing out free malware. They don’t. It’s the advertising agencies… what a suprise.

Protip (and listen up good kiddies, you heard it from the expert who analyses malware on a day to day basis): Use a Linux-based OS. There’s 1/5,000th of the amount of malware on Linux as there is on Windows, with Windows at around a couple million strains. Do the math: Linux has roughly 1,000 pieces of malware, of which the attack vectors for these have been consequentially patched.

TL;DR: Use Linux. Don’t buy a new hard drive, stick Comodo Anti-virus + Defense+ on Windows for you advanced people, otherwise use something like BitDefender or Kaspersky, with non-cryptic alerts. Simple as that.

Topic: Kongregate / Kongregate-Con?

Maybe this would be a good idea if there were some competitions, eh?

As GameStop is massive, I propose we have 2 tournaments.

One – The Gamers Tournament.

Around 16-32 tournament winners, runners up and a random wildcard go to Kon-Con, playing 30-50 games to completion for $10,000 or something like that. Each round has around 10 games, with the bottom half getting knocked out (32-16-8-4-2-1). These games are chosen by the community or are the major prize winners ($1,500 monthly prize) from the past couple of years, with each game feature earning the dev/devs say, $200-400. There will be a variety of custom badges, of which every player will try to achieve without hacking (ofc). Every badge earns a variety of points (using the normal 5-15-30-60 point system), and there will be 10 2-hour sessions throughout the 4-5 day Kon-Con where every player will have a chance to claim those badges throughout the day. Person with the most points at the end of the session wins $100, end of day winner gets $500 and the whole competition winner gets $5,000.

Second, the Speed Developer competition. This will be split in to three parts, Flash, Stencyl and Unity3D. Each developer who is invited to compete in the inaugural competition will get 5 hours for Flash, 3 hours for Stencyl and 12 hours for Unity (all in one session, live in front of the whole crowd) to program and test their games for bugs. Judges will be the most famed gamers in all of Kongredom, Moderators and maybe even Jim (all bow down to his greatness) himself, looking to give awards for a variety of categories. Each category win awards around $100-300, with the overall winner in each category getting $2k for Flash, $1.5k for Stencyl and $5k for Unity.

Total prize pool for the Player tournament: $7,500 for the players, $5-12k for developers. Total: $12.5k to ~$20k.
Total prize pool for the SpdDev tournament: $2-3k for category wins, $8.5k for overall wins Total: $10k to ~$12-13k
Grand total prize pool: $22,500 to ~$32,500.

Any thoughts on that proposal?

I’ve researched this topic for many a month after Norton gave me a warning, and the only malicious part of the game is when you try to PAY THROUGH THEIR SYSTEM. Hosted at hxxp:// and was once previously hijacked, to this day still does not remain clean through my own and others’ research. Game is fine, just don’t bother trying to pay for anything.

There are cards that do all of the things you have stated…

Dream Book = 1 DEF
Powerup = +3/
4 (upg) ATK
Shield Break = -10/-14 (upg) DEF
and the list goes on.
