Sigh. I ended that post with bang-bang-eleventy-bang-bang and the forum ate all but one “!”. Stupid computer can’t spot a parody even with a neon “Eleventy!” sign pointing at it.

They already can.

Going up around a corner: Grab the ceiling. Ceiling climb to the corner. Hold away (left or right) as you quickly double tap the jump key. Then hold towards to grab the wall. The timing of all of this is easier than one might think.

Going down around a corner is more difficult. You’ll need to jump off the wall, steer under the ceiling and do a double jump into the ceiling. Precise timing is essential.

Crud Hawthorns do suck crud. Fortunately, we got the good Hawthorn, and not any of those knockoff Crud Hawthorns.

(What? It’s not like any other explanation of the statement makes sense.)

625 brass each. (2500 brass is enough to pick up 4 extras—that, when paired with the can you get from the quest, is enough to hold water for all five plants.)

Re: zenithlord—You had to be level 10 at the moment they opened access to level 10. You probably got to level 10 after that moment and will thus have to wait for the next wave of invites (or until they remove level restrictions entirely, whichever comes first).

Gah—forgot that Kong likes to eat newlines—that looked a whole lot better when I posted it and before Kong mangled it. Anywho, the Epic War 3 page suggests that I might want to play “Frontline Defense First Ass…” and I want the right to whitespace, darn it.

Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates is a game written in Java that is far more complex than any flash game I’ve ever seen. I do agree that most Java games are rather small and crude, but that doesn’t mean you can’t build huge, complex games in that language.

Obviously whoever designed…doesn’t play too many games himself either.

The designer, David Sirlin, does quite well at national and international fighting game competitions.

Topic: Kongregate / Let's compare card drop rates

I have 4 ‘K’ cards from 19 wins (and 76 other cards from challenges) for a drop rate of over 21%.

That’s the way that random numbers work—I hit a lucky streak, you hit an unlucky streak.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] Jim deleted a bunch of Kongai cards!!

I had 4 K cards (or maybe 5—probably 4). I’m now down to two, as (at least) two items K cards have been thrown in the bit-bucket. (My 2 character K cards are still present [and still useless as I already have those characters, but that’s another story.])

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] Kongai suggestion: STARTER Cards become Weekly TRIAL Cards

My incentive is to make those ugly [starter] cards disappear from my collection, for good, so they’re not going to show up in my profile.

Has it ever occurred to you that you’re way too sensitive regarding this issue? I know the feeling (having being diagnosed with OCD and all) but, yeesh, take some deep breaths already.

If this is keeping you up at night, man, I wish could trade your problem for some of mine…

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] The Kongai card earning system is completely screwed up

Relax peoples…Kongai’s not finished yet. Emily said that Kongregate is deliberately not hyping the game yet as the servers aren’t ready. (“This has been a soft launch, more of an Open Beta than a real launch.”)

I fully agree that Kongregate should sell cards but I don’t find it surprising that they’re not selling cards while the servers still aren’t 100% ready yet.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] Make the Kongai/cup challenge permanent, please?

The reason for not changing the item is to make it so people don’t have to revisit the challenge every 2 weeks/every month.

Kongbot is a great adversary for complete rookies- no time limits, doesn’t get upset at you or forfeit after the second turn, gives players plenty of chances to see how bad tactics can get pwned… It’s a very boring adversary once you’ve gotten in a few practice games.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] Make the Kongai/cup challenge permanent, please?

The current Kongai challenge is brilliant. (And, as a person who detests a fair number of challenges done on this site, that’s a very high complement.)

I can only see one flaw in it—it ends.

Why does it have to end?

Except for Tafari, the cup is a noticeable improvement to all characters. New players tend to item-deprived for awhile. Heck, the challenge even encourages people to practice Kongai a bit before stumbling into their first fight against other players. (Raw newbies who are still trying to figure out the interface aren’t the most entertaining opponents!)

I realize that the challenge concept works best when there’s a new challenge every week. I still think that 1 Kongai perma-challenge would improve the site.

2 weekly challenges + 1 perma-challenge + 3 starter cards = newbies can “play with a full deck” on day one.

Topic: Kongregate / When will Kongi be availible?

Please give me a shout\whisper when it’s ready Mods.

It’s been ready-enough-to-be—VERY-playable 1 for quite some time now.

1) Start cracking on getting points (tons of badges ftw) to get to the level 10-13 range.

2) Sign up on the cards page (click on the grey CARDS button under KONGREGATE on the top left of the screen.) There’s a sign up button on that page—be sure to click that!

3) Wait for the next invite batch. There’s no firm schedule but they DO happen.

4) Proftit! Enjoy!

1 Unless you have a slow piece of poo computer like the one I’m using now. :(

Topic: General Gaming / Drone Wars, A Ruthlessly Infuriating, Stupid Game

“Traditional RTS players are not used to micromanaging individual units because they’re incapable of leading, prediction, and aggro management.”

The bad AI cuts both ways. I’ve completed both badge requirements with extremely little management of any kind thanks to the lousy opponent AI. You can complete stage 8 with no control drones—5 unsupervised mining drones and herding a lone cruiser around the map is enough to win.

I’ve also gotten over 3800 points in survival mode with next to no instructions given to drones except for:

  • herding a few drones that wandered WAY away from the mothership
  • moving control drones around occasionally and
  • toggling repair drones from standby to repair and back.

Your cruisers are only slightly smarter than toast but, eh, the enemy cruisers are just as moronic. Fighting this way does mean that your army WILL be going severely downhill around level 27 but the remaining rag-tag drones should be able to survive to the low thirties.

One COULD micromanage ships to last well beyond level 29 but, eh, with no further badges to win and the existence of other games that are actually fun to play, why bother?

Topic: Kongregate / Everyone play Drone Wars on survival mode! (UPDATE: regarding this week's challenge pick)

“See, this I don’t mind. My email address is greg@kongregate.com if you’d like to tell me directly how much you wish eternal suffering upon my soul.”

I wish no such thing. I just want weekly challenges that are actually FUN. When decent (badged!) games get passed by for the weekly challenges and dreck shows up in the challenges (repeatedly!), I want the challenge selection processed to be changed. As far as I can tell, that will never, ever happen on your watch.

“What bothers me more is when hatred is directed toward a game and/or that game’s developer, as a direct result of a challenge or badges. All developers do is create the best game they can, provide it for free, and implement our API. Seriously, how can anyone be angry at them about this?”

Most bad, tedious and free games can be tossed aside without consequence. But, when a bad, tedious but free game is the one obstacle keeping thousands of players from getting a coveted goal (read: the weekly card)—honestly, how can you NOT expect the hate to erupt?

Really, you’ve seen this pattern happen again and again to the point that you’ve asked people to not give (bad!) games bad ratings before.

The card system is supposed to be a way of highlighting fun games. This week, it’s are-you-willing-to-suffer-for-the-sake-of-a-subpar-Kongai-card? time.

Topic: Kongregate / Everyone play Drone Wars on survival mode! (UPDATE: regarding this week's challenge pick)

“That said, though, Drone Wars is an excellent game that’s well-deserving of the challenge slot. I have no regrets about featuring it.”

I didn’t like the MusicBounce game much but at least that challenge was short (and I even found that game semi-amusing enough to complete several levels past the card challenge level).

I quit level 3 out of mindblowingly high levels of tedium and I’m having difficulty restarting the game at level 3 due to bugs. This challenge (and your misplaced confidence in this game) makes me wish that Kongregate had a “Fire Greg” button.
