Topic: Kongregate / [New Feature] Introducing Kongpanions!

So, now you’ve taken out which badges I’ll need for the rest of the week? Now you only mention which game it will be?

I need blue portals. If you shoot me, I will shoot you back! :)

EDIT: All done! Thanks, guys!

Thanks again for all your feedback. I’ll update the game with a lot of your comments. And, hopefully, the overall rating will rise a bit more.

Thanks!!!

sigh I guess so.

It’s just disheartening, I guess. I mean, why should I bother even trying to make new games when this happens?

Topic: Kongregate / Game Ratings

Let me begin by saying that I am really disappointed. I know my the game I made and programmed for over three weeks isn’t as robust as GemCraft nor is it as complex as Sonny or DTD. It’s my first flash game, after all, not a triple-A title.

But I don’t understand how my functional and unique game is being rated as low as it is. Especially since other generic maze games or ones which take code directly from the Shootorials are being rated at the same level or better than mine. I just can’t fathom what is so poor about my game. Like I said, it’s not a trile-A title, but I think it’s fun, and it’s obvious that more time went into it than some other higher-rated games on this site.

Could someone please help me better understand what it is that is so wrong with it? My comments range from “This game sucks” to “It doesn’t shoot”. That’s about it.

Topic: Game Programming / Shooting without clicking a button

I didn’t think I’d be posting on here again since the game I was working on has been released, but I think I need to update it a bit due to complaints and incredibly poor reviews (which makes me very sad given how much time I spent on it).

My game is here: http://www.kongregate.com/games/stingjc/hollywood-zombies

My problem is that right now I have buttons nested in each zombie’s head. So, when the player clicks the right zombie head, the gun shoots and the level ends. Apparently, people just aren’t getting this. They are saying that the gun doesn’t shoot. So, how do I make it so that the gun shoots regardless of whether the zombie head is clicked. I’m using AS2 by the way.

Thanks again, guys!

Yay! My game made it….but my review scores are so low… :(

EDIT: sigh never mind. I’m not on there anymore. Even a game which is just the shootorials is beating mine now. :(

Topic: Game Programming / [AS2] Sounds in onEnterFrame function [fixed]

That is definitely it. I set the volume back to 100 and now it works. I have no clue why it was set to 1, but I don’t care. It works now. Thanks for your help!!!

Ah, I see. Okay, what I’m about to ask is a total newbie question. I understand ahead of time that I may be scolded or berated for my sheer stupidity, but I’ll ask it anyways. I was under the impression that volume ran from 0 to 100. Is that true?

I ask because when I ran the trace you supplied, the output was 1. Which means I need to change the volume?

Topic: Game Programming / [AS2] Sounds in onEnterFrame function [fixed]

I placed it directly on the timeline (I think that’s what you meant). When I play it, the sound works, but when I test the movie, no sound plays. I don’t know if that’s normal as I don’t work with the timeline itself much besides adding new frames. :)

On a side note, I was trying to see if I could run a trace on the sound itself. Again, I’m new with programming, so what I did was run this: trace(barFX.getVolume);

Again, I don’t know if it would do anything at all, but the output I got was this: [type Function].

Is that normal?

I dropped the parameters, but it didn’t work. I also placed a trace on barTimer 10, and it is indeed running fine. But no sound is playing. Oh, well. I’ll try a different approach, I guess. Thanks for trying, guys. :)

Thanks for the reply! I wish that was the case. That would be an easy fix. But no, I exported the file for Actionscript, and I gave it the identifier “barClose.wav”.

Topic: Game Programming / [AS2] Sounds in onEnterFrame function [fixed]

I’m 95% complete with my game (which took me forever, by the by, as it’s my first). However, I hit a snag involving sounds. Based off the tutorials, I thought sounds would be simple as pie. But it’s not working. And I don’t get it.

In the frame’s actions panel, I put:

barFX = new Sound();

Now, I want the sound to play as my “bar” is moving to the right. So, this is what I put in the onEnterFrame function:

barTimer++;

if(barTimer == 10) {
barFX.attachSound(“barClose.wav”);
barFX.start(0,1);
}

if(barTimer > 10 && barTimer < 35) {
run1.doorbar1._x += 10;
}

The bar slides. But no sound is played. The identifier for the sound I want is indeed barClose.wav. I’ve also tried the start function with and without the numbers in the parentheses. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Topic: Game Programming / Stumped about programming with keyframes

I’m having a bit of trouble with attaching movieclips within keyframes.

I have a keyframe (which is frame 8) which attaches MCs to the stage. If this code is put in the first frame, it works. But if it’s in any later frames, nothing attaches to the stage.

I placed it in the onLoad() function of my AS2. Am I supposed to put it elsewhere? Like an onEnterKeyframe or something? I have a feeling the onLoad() is mucking up my code, but I don’t know how to fix it.

Topic: Game Programming / [AS2] Nested button

I’m trying to make a sniper game, and I ran into a snag.

I’m trying to make the timeline go to frame 2 if I click on the movieclip’s head. I took my movieclip (named Man) and converted his head into a button (named manHead). I then placed manHead on a layer above the rest of the body in the movieclip’s timeline.

After that, I went to the main timeline and spawned an instance of Man using AS2. But I cannot get the onPress function to work when I click the Man’s head. Here’s my AS for frame 1:

stop();

function onLoad()
{
var man1 = root.attachMovie(“man”,“man01”,root.getNextHighe stDepth());
man1.x = 100;
man1.
y = 100;
}

function onEnterFrame()
{
man01.manHead.onPress = function ()
{
gotoAndPlay(2);
}
}

P.S. I’m using AS2 to spawn my guy because I want him to be randomly placed later. I’m only using the coordinates shown to illustrate that he will appear on the stage during gameplay.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I’ll see what works best for me. I appreciate all your help. :D

Topic: Game Programming / Wait for user input

Okay, so I made a function called speak() which allows text to be inserted into a dynamic textbox in my game. Here’s the problem. If I string the two functions together like so:

speak("Hello world!");
speak("Don't be cruel to me!");

Then, the second speak overpowers the first since they run at the same time. I think I’m missing something to stop the speak function from continuing until some sort of user input happens, like the player presses the spacebar. What coding would allow everything to stop until that input is triggered?

Thanks!

Topic: Game Programming / Cutscenes in my Game

So, let’s say I want to add a cutscene to my game (never made movies before). I have a character that I want to walk into the room and then talk. Now, I can’t do those without something added to the code because the talk bubble will appear at the same time as the character is walking. Would the best way to solve this be adding a timer or creating a walking variable? Or perhaps something else entirely?

P.S. – I only want to use ActionScript to solve the problem. Not the timeline.

Thanks!

Topic: Game Programming / Game Dialogue/Conversations

Hey, everyone! I am trying to finish the planning stages of my game and I need a bit of advice. I’m trying to create dialogue between my characters with an image of the speaking character to the left of the text. Something like the beginning sequence of this: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Pseudolonewolf/mardek-rpg-chapter-1

However, my game is very, very dialogue heavy and I was wondering the best way to approach this. Should I stick with arrays? If so, how do I alert the script whose picture should appear. Or would I have to individually code in each piece of dialogue?

Thanks for any help!!! :)
