Topic: General Gaming / Does anyone else hates TD games?

I kind of see them as games for people who’d rather watch than play. I get very little “fun” out of watching the units repeat the same actions over and over. With a few of these games, I’ve watched whole episodes of television while trying to get a card challenge. It’s like those Ron Popeil rotisserie gadgets – “Just set it, and forget it!”. Just tune in enough to set up the next level, and go back to your favorite show… hmmm… now I get why these are so popular.

Topic: Game Programming / Question: Is Total Training CS3 [Adobe] worth $100?

I’ve watched the flash ones and I thought they were good. If that was all you got for a hundred though I’m not sure they are that good, but with the other four sets, it is a pretty good deal.

The videos I saw were high quality and very helpful. If you think you are going to use the other sets also (besides flash), I’d probably go for it.

Topic: Game Programming / what's the best advice you've ever read on making games?

The best advice I’d ever read? Would be that making a video game is like composing a song on an instrument. If you don’t know how to play the instrument, your song probably isn’t going to turn out too well.

As for the article, I agree that feature creep is a valid concern, but rushing a game is also something I think has bitten many developers hind-end. The reason it works well in the cases in the article is that the games focus on one play concept. I’m not sure how that would extrapolate into games that fit into more broad categories, covering more than simple linear ideas.

Also, without knowledge of the background training of the participants of this “test”, I really can’t judge it ( I know this was done as a class, but I don’t know their particular level of experience). I can see someone with very detailed, finely tuned knowledge of AS busting out a game in much shorter time than someone that is picking it up as they go. What would take one person a week, could take another a month or more, only because the later person spent that extra time researching how to implement certain features they hadn’t come across before or spending time trying to figure out how to put it all together (the meta-programming). An experienced developer can bypass a lot of this extra work as much of it is either ingrained, because they know the language very well, or familiar because a lot of the processes are similar from one game to another.

I guess what I’m getting at is, while the advice here is sound, it needs to be seen in context. If you are experienced, then a week for a simple, one idea game can make sense, but if you are new, don’t be fooled into thinking that if it takes more than a week to whip out a game, that it will be bad. Be more concerned that if you are new and it “only took a week to make” that it probably isn’t going to be anything more than a training exercise. Don’t let your enjoyment of making the game cloud your judgement by making you think that it is a good game. It will be fun when you test it out, mostly because you made it. Don’t ever forget that. And taking that into account is awfully hard, and makes listening to others’ seemingly harsh criticism difficult to be objective too. Don’t be afraid of feedback, but don’t be bogged down by it either. Always expect negative and positive, throw out the extremes, and give the rest some real thought.

My advice, keep at it, do what you enjoy, and be yourself. One-size-fits-all never really fit anybody.

Setting to a blank frame is a great idea. I wonder why I’ve never come across that before.

Not trying to hijack, just wanted to express my amazement at such an overlooked simple technique.

Topic: Game Programming / HI IM NEW AND

If you are having trouble even starting out, which it sounds like you are, perhaps you should start with something like Game Maker . There are plenty of tutorials how to build games without knowing anything. Start small, work through understanding how games are put together first without the extra difficulty of learning a language at the same time. Then when you feel comfortable, you can move on to something like flash or another environment (or jump into the scripted language of Game Maker).

Try to remake some of the basic classics to get a feel for what is involved. Then when you are comfortable, expand into your own ideas.

One basic point that sometimes is missed in these type of threads: Making games is not trivial, nor easy. Imagine picking up a guitar for the first time and trying to write a song. Not going to be easy right? Well, making games is basically the same. It takes learning the basics of a lot of different techniques before you can easily put them all together and make a great game.

Topic: Game Programming / a Question

I’d simplify it a bit:

chance = Math.random();
if (chance <= .1) {
//pickpocket success
}else{
//pickpocket fail
}

You don’t need to do a Math.ceil or multiply by 100. Speed might not be a factor for you, but if it is, this will help.

Note: If this is the only time you use this particular chance, you can simplify it even further by eliminating the chance variable:

if (Math.random() <= .1) {
//pickpocket success
}else{
//pickpocket fail
}

Topic: Serious Discussion / YOUR religion?

I find it strange that someone who believes that the most advanced/complex thing/being ever possible (ie God) can spontaneously come into existence, finds the idea that the most basic of building blocks of the universe coming into spontaneous existence unbelievable.

I’m not saying the later is the case, but I find it much, much, much more likely than the former. If anything is just going to “pop-up out of nowhere” it probably is going to be the most simple of everything, not the most complex of everything.

Topic: Collaborations / Need some ideas and maybe an artist

Sorry, Phantasmagoria, that it has taken me so long to reply. I appreciate the time you took to post a very thorough reply and quite like a lot of your ideas (probably because they paralleled much of mine :) )

I do think that the abstract graphical way is probably the closest to ideal here, and will probably go in that direction. And the “expanded” view, I think that is a great idea, and would solve the resource problem I foresaw if implementing such on all fields all the time.

Also, I agree about making it clearer on when the ball is ready to hit. There are quite a few minor changes (such as the arrows idea) I think I can make to really bring this together.

Thanks for the encourage words, I really appreciate it.

And to Nqkoi1, I’m hesitant to say, but your apathy was a big turn-off. Don’t take this the wrong way because I think you add a lot to many threads, but I was put off by this particular post. I understand your disheartenment, but try not to let it be so obvious.

As a side, I do like your style on you DA page, especially the lower lefthand rendition in the self-portrait piece.

Topic: Serious Discussion / YOUR religion?

My religion? No religion.

I’d love to believe in all kinds of fantastic beings, but not one yet has shown me any slightest proof.

Also, the thought that somehow people need the threat of punishment to do good deeds appalls me. I do good for others because it is the right (just) thing to do, not because I don’t want to be punished. And I don’t require a reward either. The ones that need the punishment threat or reward are the scary ones to me.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why you shouldn't vote for a president

Personally, I only want people voting that are making an informed choice. Do you want to force people to vote based on which name they recognize or sounds like a good name? There are a lot of people out there that purposely choose to not know anything about what is going on politically and if we were to force them to vote, who knows what reasons they would use to make a pick. But being informed will not be one of them.

And as for changing the presidency, it’s not congress that would have the ultimate say in this. Since it is a constitutional issue, the states would have the final say on it by either ratifying it or not.

Added Rant: We should get rid of the electoral college and also the all-or-none vote by state. As a Californian, I know if I wanted to vote Republican, that it is a waste of time. It doesn’t mean a thing. (Not saying that is my bent, I hold to no current party; just making an example.)

Wild Idea: Make people take a test on government while voting (simple, three-five questions) that show they have a basic clue what is going on. Count peoples votes based on number of questions they get right. If you get all five, then you get five votes, if zero, then you are out of luck. Also, let people vote not for one candidate in either a yes or no fashion, but vote for each candidate on a scale of 1 to 10. This would make it much better for third party candidates to have a chance.

Final rant: I hate parties – everyone should vote on the issues that are important to them, not on a party that represents a larger portion of them than another. Having two choices always is not a good thing.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Hilary Clinton or Barrack Obama?

Obama for me. This is the first time I’ve ever felt that I was choosing not for the least worst candidate, but for the best one.

I’d say for me, the turning point came last year when Obama was on Conan O’Brian’s show and was talking about how his family, especially his children, keep him in check and don’t let his power go to his head. Sure he’s a senator, but to his kids, he’s just dad and all that goes with that. This really made me feel that here was a person that was real, putting himself out there because he believes he can make a difference. Not a pollster reader bent on gaining power for the sake of it, but someone who just wants a better world for his children.

Sure, I don’t agree with everything he has to say, but I feel he cares about us as a people. I just can’t say that about the other popular choices right now.

Topic: Kongregate / This MS Office ad needs to die.

I have no problem with ads in general – as long as they don’t blink, blare sound, expand beyond their indicated boundaries, follow along with scrolling, and/or pop-up over other content. I would be distraught if I found these type of ads on my site, and I’d be talking to my ad company or looking for a new one.

Topic: Collaborations / Need some ideas and maybe an artist

I’m thinking about going back and redoing a game I created for a contest which due to time constraints had very minimal graphics. It’s a golf game where the ball interacts with physics equations (the theme of the contest was ball physics). I received quite a bit of feedback saying that instead of using text for the equations, that graphical representation would work better. (Also, that I needed to make it easier to get started – it is a bit complicated, but I feel I’ve already got that part worked out – by adding a tutorial/practice course that guides the player into it rather than drop them in as real golf does, which was the route I unfortunately had initially chosen.).

What I’m looking for are ideas on what type of graphics could work here, and also, perhaps find someone interested in working with me on it. Right off, I realize that the game is complicated as it stands, but I’m planning on making it much easier to get started. I plan on keeping the three courses I have now as is, with new graphics, while also adding a new course that teaches the game gradually.

Also, I’d like to redo the menus and transition screens. Right now they are bland and boring. Again, at the time I just didn’t have the time to put anything else together before the deadline.

Note: Here is a link to some of the feedback I received so you can have an idea of what people were asking for graphically.

Topic: General Gaming / CALL TO BOYCOTT IN-GAME ADVERTISING

Just wanted to add my support to the developers. I’m more than happy to watch a couple ads now and then , if it is going to benefit the game creators. I know I’m in the minority here, but I’d like to see even more done to compensate the developers, and encourage more revenue streams. Perhaps a paypal-type link for each game to donate (Kong could keep a small percentage in return for the service).

But for now, I think it would be in the best interest of all if more games contained more unobtrusive (no blaring sound or blinking) advertisement – this would help developers recoup their costs and give players a way to give back. I know I’d feel better if I had an easier way to give back as a player. The idea that I some how deserve to play these games for free as if I were a customer (with no obligation to pay) boggles my mind. Selfish doesn’t seem a strong enough word.

Topic: Game Programming / Question involving Classes (AS3)

build a sort of proxy type class that takes carries out whatever code you need done and have your classes use that class

ColbyCheeze, I’m not sure I know what you are talking about here. What do you mean by “use that class”? Is this similar to the idea that Moonkey had about using a class with the methods I want consolidated and making an instance of it in each class that uses those methods? From your wording, I’m thinking you are meaning something else, but I don’t know what that could be.

And thanks for the book recommendations. I’ve been thinking about getting a book like these so I’ll check into them.

But you could make the references to the new class private, so only the parent has access to the object itself.

That would do just as well, I would think. The more I think about your idea, Moonkey, the more it seems this is the way it is probably meant to be done.

Topic: Game Programming / Question involving Classes (AS3)

Depending on what you’re doing, you could take the relevant info out of all the different classes and put them into a new class, and then give each of your original classes a reference to an instance of the new class.

That’s an intriguing idea. I think I’ll give that a try just to see it in action. My concern is would I be able to keep these methods private to the parent class? In my case, I’m the only one probably ever using this code, so it’s not necessary. But, for learning purposes, I’d like to try to keep them private as they aren’t going to be used outside the parent class.

As for motivation, I find maintaining the same code in multiple spots troublesome, not because of laziness, but because it is error prone and harder to keep track of.

Dazzer said that, not me. I think it’s a very good (and fundamental) reason!

Topic: Game Programming / Question involving Classes (AS3)

I ran across one super-hackfull solution which was good for a chuckle, but not really a good solution. It basically involved using interfaces, and then creating a separate actionscript file that had the full text for all the functions. You then include the .as file in any class that implements the interface and the functions are declared and filled in from that single file.

I thought of something similar, and came to the same conclusion that it was a horrible solution. If I’d stuck to putting everything on the stage timeline, this would be trivial, but I keep hearing that classes are the way to go, so I’m trying to get it to work using classes. I figure I can’t really make a decision on which method is better until I’ve tried them both properly.

Topic: Game Programming / Question involving Classes (AS3)

Interfaces in my case would be pointless, as these methods are only used by the classes that they are in. It’s not the names that I need to keep the same (though they are right now), but the code inside the methods.

But if “I don’t want to copy and paste code” is the reason why you’re looking for multiple inheritance then you’re looking at the wrong reasons.

Could you elaborate on this, dazzer? I was under the impression that this was one of the fundamental reasons.

Edit: Changed Phantasmagoria to dazzer. Had mis-attributed the quote.

Topic: Game Programming / Question involving Classes (AS3)

I have a couple classes that use some of the same methods, and I can’t figure out how to make it so I don’t have to give each class a copy of these methods. I’d like to have them in one place only, but I’ve already extended these classes (from MovieClips), so I don’t think that is an option. I’ve tried making one set internal (since both classes are in the same package), but I can’t get the other class to use those methods. I contemplated making a new class with them that extends MovieClips, then have the classes extend this new one, but that seemed very cumbersome, and if in the future I wanted another group of shared methods between one of these classes and another unrelated one, this method wouldn’t work again.

My question is, am I missing something fundamental here? I would think this would come up all the time, but I haven’t come across it yet. Any help would be very appreciated.

(Note: I’m trying to make a switch to OOP using a document class and other classes, and would like to stay away from options such as putting them on the timeline. If this is misguided, any advice there would also be helpful.)

Topic: General Gaming / Should Coil Be Banned?

How sad are we, when surrounded by hundreds of games dedicated to ending life, we can conceive of shunning the one that depicts starting one.
