Thanks to all for participating in this little brainstorm. I’m still firm in my stance against this sort of Kred usage, but I’m glad to have read your varied opinions about it and feel like I understand the situation a bit better. Cheers!

Having an opinion is not “seeking attention”. We are having a discussion about what we like and don’t like. By your own logic, if you have no topical content to add to the discussion, why are you posting at all ? No one is forcing you to criticize my unease with this game’s effect on my beloved Kong.

I sincerely believe that the more of these forward profiteering games like HoG, Dream World, Remnants of Skystone and surely others we have on this site, the more indie “game jammers” will want to flock elsewhere, where they don’t have to lurk in the shadows of these semi-pro ventures. There is a big difference between a monthly MMO fee and this “pay to win” spiel, and I personally feel, as a 30-something gamer and occasional game developer, that this trend is harmful to the gaming ecosystem, tying income to enjoyment is the very opposite of what “play” is supposed to be.

I’ve been a Kongregate player for a while… couple years maybe. I come here for the indie games and the community, that’s what makes Kong unique. Now this game, Heroes of Gaia, does not fit here, in my not-so-humble opinion.

It is too big, too buggy, and has its own set of drama, not the least of which is the absurd economy that encourages people to spend $100s of dollars a month on in-game items. I was all in support of the Kreds “tipping” feature when it was launched, but this pay-to-pwn business is a travesty and an insult to Kong players.

I recognize the amount of work that went into building this game, anyone can see you’ve basically build a complete multiplayer HOMM clone from scratch, which is no small feat by any standard. You are more than welcome to operate the game as you see fit, and extract profit from the fruits of your labour… nothing I say or do can stop you, nor would I want to. My beef is with Kongregate alone, in featuring this title and lending it the non-profit Kred system, in what I feel is an aberration of its intended purpose. Every Kred spent on this game, is a Kred that doesn’t go to the small guys, the creative luminaries who give us the likes of Gemcraft, Hedgehog Launch and Shift, to name just a few. The ones who dare to think outside the box and come up with innovative games instead of rehashing the same old formula. Indie developers are the lifeblood of Kong, and what keeps me coming back, every single day, in search of new experiences.
