Topic: Game Programming / CPU-intensive games.

Another reason is that the native renderer of Flash uses Vector Graphics, which are fairly computationally intensive,
whilst other game frameworks like Slick (Java) simply blit (copy the pixels from raster graphics) to the screen.

There are many ways to cache movieclips into collections of bitmaps. At rendering time these images are often copied over to a single bitmap attached to the screen (consequently allowing the game to run much faster).
Two popular flash games which use blitting are SHMUP and boxhead.

Thanks for being the first to give me feedback :),
rather than those people who vote me down without telling me why.

Once I have a decent amount of time off Uni, I will resume implementing the rest of the gameplay features and adding in more visual/U.I. polish.

P.s. does anyone have any comments about the balance/gameplay about the game in it’s current state?
Your feedback will be used to improve the final product:

Topic: Off-topic / Kongregate vs Newgrounds

Newgrounds is superior:

I’d like to contradict the previous statement I made about Kongregate:
1. The way they implemented the under judgement system Sucks. Why? because as soon as you submit something, more likely than not it will quickly be burried beneath push the button games for over a month.
On newgrounds, under judgement submissions are placed at the top of the list, and users are rewarded extra blam/protection points for voting on them

2. Kongregate has trained most (not all) of its users to expect games with as small a learning curve as possible.
The message voters send to developers is “otherwise don’t even bother!”
Whilst Newgrounds encourage people to expect a new experience each time, and in general have much more well thought out comments in the form of reviews.

3. Kongregate only promotes a few of the most popular games, forgetting that Developer’s matter just as much as the players:

Topic: General Gaming / Droid Grids Beta 0.18.12 (Looking for Constructive Criticism)

Requesting intellegent feedback:
I am yet to received a single comment from another user on my game:

http://www.kongregate.com/games/glider521al/droid-grids-beta-0-18
(for people who are interested in a challenging top down shooter):

I’ve spent over 3 months on it (including the engine), and I’m looking for feedback on how I can improve it/what features people would like me to add (aside from those already mentioned in the updates section).

Overview (survival mode):
The objective is to survive for as long as you can against increasingly difficult waves of enemies, whilst utilizing weapons, turrets, special abilities and traps.

Each round, more weapons become unlocked, but enemies will become stronger (e.g. greater hover mine speed, infantry with more rapid firepower, better shielding etc.)

Features:
EQUIPMENT includes:

  • Nano bot med kits (rapidly recharge shields and repair armour)
  • Ammunition packs
  • Automated Turrets (currently these respawn after a fixed delay, but this will change in future versions)

different WEAPONS are unlocked each round and Include:

  • Dual weilded pistols (Available at start)
  • Shotgun
  • Plasma SMG
  • Flamethrower
  • Frag Grenades (Available at start)
  • Camo mines (just remember where you dropped these, or you’ll get a nasty surprise)
  • Rocket Launcher (new)!
  • More to come…

ENEMIES:

  • Droid minor: Armed with light plasma weaponary, melee attacks and occasionally equipped with shield gauntlets, they form the backbone of the army.
  • Sprinter Droids: These pests, like to get up close and personal, meleeing you with their shock gloves
  • Hover mines: Can hover over pits, and will home in and explode on their targets. Try and destroy these whilst they’re still nearby other enemies.
  • Droid Majors: These are the avant gaurde of the army, not only do they have regenerating shields like the player but weapons to match…
  • More to come…

TERRAIN OBJECTS:

  • Barrels filled with explosive radioactive material
  • Void Tiles (pits)
  • Panel switches
  • Forcefield bridges (Can be activated with panel switches).
  • More to come…

Miscellaneous Features:

  • Different control schemes, which you can customize to your liking
  • An armour ability system (Currently only cloaking is available)
  • Split screen co-op mode
  • Credit System for purchasing turrets (later to be used on upgrading weapons)
  • An effective targeting and pathfinding system that can deal with hordes of enemies.
  • A Credits System: Credits are earnt by slaying enemies and can be spent on unlocking/reviving turrets (in future versions you’ll be able to purchase weapon upgrades/armour permutations too).

FEATURES UPCOMING:
This game, is still WIP, but with this SWF, I hope to demonstrate the potential of my game engine.
There are many, more features and gameplay modes to come:

  • More Weapons/weapon upgrades
  • More special Abilities
  • Civilian Escourt mode
  • Reactor Defense mode
  • Mid range snipers
  • Tank units
  • Dropships
  • Better Graphics

Topic: General Gaming / Droid Grids Beta 0.18.3 (Top Down Shooter)

Right sorry, I forgot to hit the publish button when I submitted the newer version.

It should be available now (Beta 0.17.6)

Topic: General Gaming / Droid Grids Beta 0.18.3 (Top Down Shooter)

Update 0.17.6
1. Added new map- Quarantine: This is a symetrical map, with a far more balanced layout than the original (Added at the suggestion of 2 players who said the old one was a bit disorganized).
2. Enemies are restricted to attack from the Southern Border in round 1, but will be able to spawn at different borders as the game progresses.
3. Fixed Ability indicator not showing in co-op mode.
4. Turrets are slightly faster, and can take a bit more punishment.
5. Cleaned up the interface a bit. People have mentioned the U.I. as a significant issue. I’ll be working to improve it.

The future:
I may keep local co-op and implement mouse aiming seperately (As they’re are an equal number of people advocating for each).

The players who choose keyboard aiming and strafeing over the mouse, will have slightly stronger shields and armour to compensate for the more limited freedom.

The game is still indev, so I’m open to feedback and suggestions.

I looked up the name “Droid Grids” on google and no one else used it, let alone own it.
Copyrighting the word “droid” makes no more sense than Cadbury suing someone over using the colour purple on their product (they tried and failed).

Add WASD control system, and better sounds would be good.

There is a WASD control system for player 2 already, and you can change the controls.
I haven’t decided on what music to use (if any). Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Please remember to rate. Currently most of the rating is due to the previous version of the game, and therefore a incredibly outdated.

Topic: Kongregate / ***Kongregate Beta Game List (none right now)***

DROID GRIDS BETA 0.18.3

I’ve significantly updated the game and it’s available here:
www.kongregate.com/games/glider521al/droid-grids-beta-0-18

I’m looking for new feedback:
Was the game to hard/to easy?
What would you like to see added?
How can I improve the games (aside from sound/graphics)?

NEW FEATURES:

Cloaking is now an armour abiity:
Drawing inspiration from halo. A meter on the right of your HUD show’s how much power you have when engaging this ability. Once the power depletes to zero, you’ll need to wait
till it recharges to a certain level (icon will glow) before you can engage it again

Difficulty curve significantly changed:
Users complained that the game was too hard to begin with and they would get swarmed by enemies within the first 5 minutes of gameplay. To address this I’ve:

  • Added a more gradual difficulty curve with a system of rounds and waves:
Each round enemies become more agressive, more varied, more numerous and will sometimes have upgraded speed and combat capabilities.
Currently 3 waves make up a round (but that will change when I add more enemies in the future)
  • Limited the number of enemies that can stalk you around the map:
This feature took over a week of programming (on/off) to get right and prevents players from getting swarmed by a ridiculous number of enemies on the field.

This limit increases each round.

New Credits System:
Credits are earned by destroying enemies.

Turrets ports can now be unlocked by spending Credits at them:
-400 Credits to unlock a turret port
-50 Credits to Respawn a turret

Miscellaneous changes:

  • Fixed glitch with enemies standing stupid if they stand where you were 3 seconds ago.
  • Optimized code for custom controls
Remember that if the fire & strafe keys are the same for 1st/2nd player,
than the controls in Co-Op defaults to:
L: Strafe (1st player) Shift: Strafe (2nd player)
Enter: Fire (1st player) Space: Shoot (2nd Player)

Topic: Technical Support / Problems changing the name of/removing submission

Thanks for the reply, I may just post the new version under the same name after all (There are sticky threads for promoting new betas updates).

It would have been nice to be able to change the name of your submissions when you upload a new version(to reflect the version number).

Topic: Technical Support / Problems changing the name of/removing submission

I intend to release a significant update to an old game I submitted (To curb the difficulty level, and add alot more features)

However Kongregate will neither let me change the name of the older upload, nor will it let me delete it.

I want to DELETE this project:
http://www.kongregate.com/games/glider521al/droid-grids-beta

My reasons are as follows:
-Its incredibly outdated, and I want to upload a new version under a slightly different name.
-Users complained that the gameplay was too hard and they would get killed within the first 7 minutes (I agree with them, and have since introduced measures to fix this)
-It hasn’t got any feedback for months, so I want it removed.
-There are several crucial glitches I’ve fixed since than, and new features I’ve introduced since than.

Just out of interest the newer version is here (will upload once I delete the older one, and maybe add a better map):

Topic: Off-topic / Kongregate vs Newgrounds

Kongregate is far better:
-community aspect is much stronger.
-Friendlier attitude to developers and artists who are just starting out.
-Fewer angry trolls.
-Admin is not as paranoid (Seriously every 2nd message on new grounds was we’ll ban your account if you do something stupid).
-Ongoing support from the community when you release a game.

Newgrounds users generally completely ignore your game after the under judgement phase, unless you get a really high score. This really sucked for me because, the initial upload was rendered unplayable by encryption in anything older than flash player 10.1.
