Topic: General Gaming / top 5 shooters (first or third person)

ok I will divide this to single and multiplayer as these types of FPS are totally different. IMO!!

Singleplayer

1) Half-life series

2) Portal

3) Vietcong + add on

4) Mafia

5) Max Payne

(I didn’t list Jedi Knight 2 as it wasn’t the shooting that appealed to me in the game, but the lightsaber duels). Moreover as you can see on this list in singleplayer I look for a great an immersing storyline not awesome graphics or realism (which I quite care for in some Multiplayer shooters). I also came back to all of these games except Max Payne. Stalker would probably land on that list, but I haven’t played it yet so I can’t really say at the moment.

Multiplayer

1) Battlefield 2142 ( probably because I play in a clan for the sheer fun. If I played that alone I’d quit a looong time ago, still with friends it’s just great even though it could be much much better. It’s not realistc at all it’s just good to play bevcuase there can be some tactic involved and teamwork is essential )

2) ArmA (funnily enpugh I only played 2 games of this in Co-op mode, and I must say it’s a true simulation of warfare. Oh last game I played lasted about 100 minutes and the first shot was fired ( with permission ) after about 70 minutes this game has a really narrow public. It’s not fun it’s serious.)

3) Americas Army (for realism and fun at the same time, just not too much teamwork)

4) CoD4 (great game it’s just that teamwork on a random server just blows. Some games are unplayable without teamwork, like ArmA, some encourage it, like BF2142. This one just doesn’t do nothing to help it)

5) Counter Strike 1.6 (well I started long before 1.6 but that’s what got me into “realistic” online FPS)

DISCLAIMER This list is extremely biased so if you want to bash and shout ‘WHAT NO HALO?! or WHAT COD4 on 4th place?! after BF2142’ then just bugger off. I played a lot of shooters, I just didn’t play them all.

Topic: Serious Discussion / New Year's Baby's Death

(“One day this was a happy, perfect family, and the next day it’s been devastated.”)

(Family members said the couple’s only source of conflict was Craig’s interaction with Corrine’s mother.)

(Craig Wilson and Crystal Twiddy, both recovering alcoholics)

(and several broken ribs — some of which, according to the autopsy, turned out to be older injuries.)

Yeah, perfect familly.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Russia starts war with Georgia

(And that’s Poland giving 12 points to Russia, I see they don’t want to lose there oil.)

Did you know that the Polish president was one of the first to criticize Russia for this conflict? (I don’t know if it’s right for him to be so judgmental so quickly, but this totally contradicts what you said).

Deficit you are just pulling ‘facts’ out of your hat.

Deficit what’s your basis on that one?

(Of course the US would win.)

i presume a war with Russia?

Because in my opinion if a war between USA and Russia would occur surely enough other countries would engage in that and it would go into World War

What the hell are you saying guys? Russia IS NOT A SOCIALIST republic, check your sources.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Nationalism In A Globalized World

pmr in my opinion:

-equality doesn’t equal (oh the irony :) ) good things/treatment etc. for everyone. Equality is often mediocre or poverty ( look at socialism for example ). Forced equality also usually ends up in this:

There was a saying during the time of communism in my country – Poland (I’ll try to translate it):

“Resting or working you still get paid.” It’s not an exact quote, but it delivers the meaning pretty accurately. In that time every man was forced to have a job, so every guy was employed, but you can imagine that a lot of these guys were slacking off and their work was usually poor ( cause of no motivation ). I think that’s a pretty nasty example of equality messing up.

- how would you imagine all the world as one country? First we would need to get rid of poverty. You are thirty after all, please try not to be as naive. Take this example:

You have 10 people, each of them has a basket of fruits, while another group of about 50 people shares a total of 50 apples. You mix these two groups up? What do you end up with? 60 , not 50 hungry people. Maybe the 60 are a little less hungry then the 50, but they still are. Get my point? The planet is overpopulated. If you have too much extra money and want to help then donate to the poor.

You don’t need to bring politics and ‘evil’ people into this. Simple arythmatics and logic is enough.

Ok so let’s leave the hokey players but tell me why do you hate their politicians then? You know I tend to value someones opinion if it has a reason or is backed up by logic.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why wait, Blow them up now!

Could you elaborate on that? What exactly do you hate about Russia? Who do you hate (the nation, the land, specific politicians)?

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why wait, Blow them up now!

Then please don’t write stuff like that without any [sarcasm] in the serious section if you don’t really mean it or don’t want to get a response like mine. Because there are people that actually think like that.

(I think the US should just nuke Russia cuz there all a bunch of scumbags.)

I think your thoughts are as ambitious as Hitlers himself. Yeah wipe a whole nation out, we don’t care about them, they are scumbags!

Frankly these kind of comments make me SICK!

Have you ever been to Russia? You know there are real people living there? All sorts of people: selfish people, intellectuals, scientists, doctors, murderers , thieves, old people, ill people, young people, orphans, rich people, smart people, dumb people… just like in your country. Based on your ‘opinion’ why shouldn’t your country get nuked then?

EDIT: Oh yeah and before you ask I’ve been to Russia, it’s nice (at least in Sankt Petersburg).

Solidus said

(You cannot compare what happens in an unconventional war to a conventional one.)

Both Russia and USA have nuclear weapons, how would you call a conflict between these two a conventional war? IMO the amount of troops of each country is outweighed by the nuclear capabilities of each country.

Imagine this USA fight Russia, obviously it doesn’t start with nuclear missles fired, but when one of them is at a big disadvantage it’s just a matter of pushing the button as a last resort (by the losing side).

Topic: Serious Discussion / Ambiguity in the Ten Commandments

again OFF TOPIC.

No I haven’t, I’ve already read he died 22nd July (or June was it?)? That’s a big loss from what I’ve already seen. This year is really taking all the good ones: Paul Newman (still alive but has weeks to live), Bernie Mac, Carlin… and probably a couple hundred more great people I haven’t heard off.

BTW: I haven’t heard about him cause I don’t have cable and live in Europe so my only source is the Internet and I don’t randomly look for stuff on there.

collocations hmm proably translated that wrong, I meant two words together that for a foreigner seem fine but are unnatural for someone who’s native tongue is English. Usually occur when someone relies on a dictionary. Examples:

driving a bike instead of riding a bike
or
collateral income or collateral benefits
you say collateral damage, but not income.

That’s nice. I see your reasoning. OK my doubts have been resolved.

BTW English is my second language so feel free to correct me on some collocations.

I don’t think you should kick people for that, because if you do they won’t have the chance to improve. I also do understand that a mod’s work is time consuming, but I have a question for you. Do you think posts like the ones I provided above, can get a discussion sidetracked or harder to read or deteriorate it’s quality?

Should we leave them or report them to you? Not as offensive of course, but as of no relevance at all (i.e. not moving the discussion forward). These are honest questions as I feel you have much more experience in that field than I do.

Also are topics like:
- What would you do if you were president?
- Which historical periods would you like to live in?
IMO these are more like : What ice cream flavor do you like? That’s because there is nothing to discuss, it’s just a thread of opinions right? I like sword fighting so I would like to live in the Middle Ages. I like chocolate ice cream because it has chocolate chips in it.

Don’t you think these fall more in the lines of off topic? ( I don’t have a problems with the topics themselves )

@RMcD: I sure hope so. I left 3 bad and 1 good, not for misinformation, but I just didn’t see a purpose in providing more good examples as this topic is about the bad ones.

OT Probably half of you is considering now if I’m a forum ‘Nazi’ :)

OK let me put it this way ( also my previous post has been updated ).

From what I’ve been thought a discussion is expressing your opinions and backing them up with logical explanation or facts. It is obvious that some topics like religion cannot be discussed in that matter, because your views can not be backed up by facts or logic.

The topics or posts that don’t consider the latter part (that is the explanation or facts) are merely an expression of someone’s opinion not a discussion post.

In essence: form a statement → back it up → discuss it (and maybe sway some people’s views).

Topic: Serious Discussion / Serious discussion?

OK give me a minute. (I’ll edit this post)

bad examples:

(i think american democracy sucks)

(dctaco12 is exactly right. Those arguing against him are probably from Russia.)

(Ty pheonix red, except for penguin these must be all soviets)

(Oh, I may only be 16, but I also know how to save England. It involves melting down every chav and benefit grubbing lowlife, and melting them into some kind of biofuel, hence simultaneously solving money problems, lowering taxes, fuel prices, crime rates, and housing costs, as well as improving quality of life for everyone remaining. Using our improved economy, we would create mechanical means of filling the jobs once taken by these people, such as stacking shelves and collecting trolleys from Tesco.

See? Gordon Brown ain’t got nothing on me.)

good example:

(Also, I agree with Bong on the refusing business thing. It’s a freedom of speech issue, I suppose, and while I disagree e.g. with the KKK, who hate me because I am jewish, I am absolutely opposed to making it illegal for them to hold their opinion, or even for them to voice said opinion. If they start inciting riots, or asking people to kill me, then I have a problem, but not until then. Similarly, if a business is privately owned, I think the owner should be allowed to serve exactly who they like and no one else; it’s no one’s business but theirs who they serve. Like Bong said, you can vote with your money and take your business elsewhere; you have as much right NOT to eat there as they have not to serve you.)

Topic: Serious Discussion / Serious discussion?

Don’t get me wrong, It doesn’t aggreviate me. It’s just that you come here to seriously discuss something, I have no problem with people having different views. I actually like it if someone is trying to be convincing , by backing up his/hers theories or at least trying. The problem lies in the form. For me it’s about perfecting your discussion skills, learning how to sway the views of the person you are talking to. I don’t care if I actually convince someone.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Serious discussion?

Nah it’s just that the discussions just aren’t serious at all. It’s not about people offending people. It’s just that you come in you want to talk seriously about something and basically it’s all just a big laugh or some random BS ( pardon my French). Half of the topics here are closer to the off topic sub forum.

I’ve seen Phoenix a lot of the times here and I do like his posts because they are actually in the way a discussion should be formed. (by bringing up points and explaining views) A lot of the posts unfortunately are not a discussion at all. Just subjective opinions. (I can elaborate on this if you want)

What do you think?

EDIT: I started writing before Phoenix message was here.

Then I feel calm now, because you know there are people in history books that had similar ideas to some of the ones that you presented :)

Also where from Scotland are you? Like I said before I lived in Edinburgh for 3 months, about 3 years ago. Lovely city.
