Well I guess I'm quitting your game now.
I have to agree with Valimont. I don’t feel quite as strongly and I’m not leaving the game, but yeah, this did involve real life money, and that makes a difference. The gift was great. I was thrilled to get it. But I felt a little ripped off that I’d spent money on something I could have gotten for free. And yes, I can make new items, but whatever I make I still have leftover coins that I didn’t need to buy.
I think a better handling of this sort of thing in the future would be to do the gift first and make the chests available right after. It shouldn’t cut down on sales too much since you still have to buy coins to make what you want. In fact, I think people will be more likely to buy that purple/orange chest when that’s the only coin they need than they would be when they needed five different coins. Then they may just write off the item as something they won’t get and end up buying NO chests.
Anyway, for future events, I think doing a gift and following it up with buyable items will still encourage spending while leaving people feeling like they’ve scored something awesome instead of feeling slightly ripped off.
