Topic: Game Design / Tower of London Feedback

There are small one page cutscenes between each floor that give bits and pieces of backstory, as well as pages torn form a journal that you find which serve both as mini tutorials and as ways to get the story across. The design is the sort of thing where you have to play it over and over anyway because you tend to die a lot until you get good at the game, and each time you learn more about the monsters, the Tower itself, and the backstory behind why Excalibur is there, who sealed it, etc.

A main plot point drawn from real life Tower of London legend revolves around the existence of the Ravens of the Tower, and how the loss of the Ravens is supposed to signify some dire catastrophe for the monarchy, which in this game comes in the form of the seal on Excalibur being lifted.

It’s quite a bit of work to add keyboard controls to the web version, especially considering that it’s supposed to function mostly as an advertisement and demo for the phone version.

The alchemy is simple an straightforward. You only have two options which are explained in a short paragraph. Either you alch an item in your inventory (an offensive or defensive equipment) to turn it into a potion, or you spend alchemy materials which act as currency that you automatically gather from the bodies of dead monsters to make potions. The only catch is that if you alch items it makes the process less efficient for just making potions from materials and so it costs more each time you turn an item into a potion.

The depiction that I use of the Tower of London is specifically of the ‘White Tower’…. which does pretty much look as I drew it. Yes the place called ‘The Tower of London’ is actually a fortress in which the White Tower is just one part, but this part of the Tower was chosen because it fits the theme and the backstory. Essentially, the inside of this building, when entered using a special magical way, leads to a pocket world that consists of many small dimensional planes we call floors for ease of reference that are connected by portals guarded by the boss monster of that floor. The at the very back of the Tower Excalibur is sealed, and everything that gets in the way is a test set up by Morgan le Fay so that only a truly worthy warrior could claim the sword rather than some fat lazy noble.

Each class has stats, but they don’t change on level up. Leveling up only heals you to full hp and makes it more difficult to heal up from the same monsters. It acts a disincentive to grind, since you gain nothing but alchemy materials from doing so and you’ll end up spending those potions anyway if you try and sit in the same area grinding up, so you might as well just head for the boss making detours for event spaces if you feel like it.

Unplayably awful art, and shouldn’t have used the name of a real location, it’s just weird.

EDIT: also terrible controls (doesn’t take keyboard input that I can work out), and general lack of instructions, everythings unclear (significantly because of art). Think you should have tried to get someone to test this for you before release….though possibly you wouldn’t have liked what they’d have to say.

Thank you for your input. I will try to address each point you brought up.

  • The art is minimalist and sketchy, I am aware of this. I’m not a talented or experienced artist and worked on this game solo. If the art lets down a portion of the players, that’s just a hit it will have to take.
  • Your opinion on using the name of a real location is noted. There are specific legends and mythologies surrounding the actual Tower of London that the game draws on and uses heavily in the setting. If the game was called “Battle for New York” or “Legend of the Pharoah”, I doubt I would be called out on using real places or titles so I’m somewhat confused about this complaint.
  • The game is made for a touchscreen phone and can also be played with a mouse. I understand that the use of arrows on the dungeon screen might have been confusing to someone with a keyboard in front of them. That’s something I’ll take into consideration in the future.
  • I have a pool of around 10 people who I tested with for months, some in person and some online who I’ve never met. They’ve often had issues with the game that I handled and used to improve the final product. They’ve also generally come to really enjoy Tower of London, so I’m happy to know that the potential is there.

I appreciate that you took the time to play my game and respond to my thread.

If you have further things you wish to discuss I would be happy to hear them.

Hey guys, for the past few months in my spare time I’ve been working on a game for Android called ‘Tower of London’. A few days ago I published it to the android play store for $.99, and just now I published the html5 version here.

I’d appreciate any feedback you guys can give me, good or bad.

I have a far paying job and im 15. I dont need to do the best grammer… but I use spell cheak so that should be good enough. NOW… im going to ignor the rest of your posts. So please stop

I’m sorry, you make it too easy for me so I can’t just leave it be. My internet handle of draganviper is correctly spelled however I say it is correctly spelled. It also has nothing to do with dragons, or snakes since that’s how you seem to be reading it. You claim to ‘use spell cheak’ but that’s clearly false since you have so many errors that I’m half convinced you’re doing it on purpose… only half because you don’t seem smart enough for that level of trolling.

You may not like being called on it, but that doesn’t change the fact that grammar and spelling are important. How can you expect to work with people if they have no idea what you’re trying to say?

You probably just need to tweak the numbers to make it work. Keep adjusting them price of upgrades and things until a casual player could reasonably be getting enough for a new upgrade every couple of attempts, no matter how far along they are. It’s very important in these kinds of games to always be feeling some progress, otherwise players give up and quit.

If you were actully interested you would have messaged me and I would have sent you the demo. Ihave also made games in class but if anything they will make you not want to collab with me. As for you dragonViper, im doing this as a hobby so I dont care if it messy… you can still read it and it makes sense so its good enough. Also I see you on this forum all the time dissing peoples gramer and being a “grammer nazi” and just so you know that makes you very unappeling as a partner.

Ok, first off you spelled my name wrong but I’m not really surprised. Second, I’m not a grammar nazi. I don’t point out individual errors and nitpick people while ignoring the content of their posts, the only reason I mentioned it was because all your posts are riddled with errors and you’re supposed to be putting your best foot forward in a thread like this. That you can’t be bothered to clean up your posts says a lot about how much effort you probably put into your work.

Don’t make me laugh with the ‘unappeling as a partner’ thing. Seriously, I almost did a spit take when I read that. I’m not claiming to be some elite developer who’s too good to work with you… but seriously you couldn’t pay me to partner with you from what I’ve seen of this thread so far. I’m probably not the only one either.

but if you do choose to do it why not just use a client that bases the game off a pokemon ROM, like pokemmo.eu but without actually including the rom or links to it. Thus you can’t get in trouble.

There are so many reasons why that wouldn’t “keep you out of trouble”, that are already discussed in this very thread, that I won’t bother trying to list them all again.

It looks incredibly unprofessional to have so many grammar and spelling errors in what is supposed to be your official “concept pitch”. You should clean those up.

Even if you’re highly skilled in vector art you could use inkscape instead of adobe flash.

Embedding .svg files using Flash Develop isn’t exactly a streamlined, simple, glitchless process at the moment as far as I know.

I’d love to be proved wrong though.

Well, yeah it does. But I didn’t really think the ad revenue would be that big.

Anarchy Online had FMV billboards ingame that played ads. Players tended to avoid those areas :P

At least it was a freemium game and paying players didn’t get ads.

^ If you happen to use an HTML5 engine such as Game Maker Studio or Construct 2, imported MP3 files get converted to .ogg files and such.

^ You need to grow up. I came here originally to give advice and see if I could help, but the way you reacted just happened to piss me off. Also, it’s a good idea to leave silly attempts at personal attacks out of it especially when you seem so sensitive that you flip out over really minor things.

Oh yeah, last thing. Learn to spell. Unless English isn’t your first language you have no excuse. Even a 14 year old should be able to do that if you want to be taken seriously.

No paperwork, and if what you say about your assets is true you have nothing to worry about. Even if you were obviously committing copyright infringement by, lets say, making a Pokemon MMO or something you wouldn’t really get into any legal trouble you just would need to take it down if the copyright owners ever asked you to.

Definitely. I would give advice about how to treat people if you want them to work for free (and if you only want to offer a percent of profits, that’s still working for free because (a) You’re not going to make any real money at this for a long time, not gonna lie and (b) it’s standard practice to give all collaborators a percentage of any meaningful profits so saying it like you’re making some big offer is just naive and insulting)

Looking at you’re previous games, I would applaud your persistence if it wasn’t for the incredible lack of originality or polish you put into them.

Bla, bla I know you probably didn’t read any of this because I’m not offering to waste my time working for you, but your odds of finding a partner to work with here go down dramatically every time you make a post. You’d probably be better off starting a new account and leaving your old work behind if you want to be respected after this in this community.

Money gives you no actual advantage ingame, just skins people drool over.

Also Jaecks. Take a look at some game design books.

I love LoL, but paying money does allow you to amass things like champions and rune pages significantly faster which while not providing an advantage per say, does greatly increase adaptability especially in things such as draft mode (it’s actually a disadvantage to have lots of champions in ARAM >.>).
