Although I benefited from the existence of the alliance, I didn’t participated in its formation.
I believe that the alliance can get into the sheer size (and being the one and only alliance holding its shape for so long) is due to the game mechanics though. Still waiting for the allies vs axis powers to happen, instead of the unconventional warfare we have, LOL.

This is a poor idea. All a cheating faction (not gonna name names, but *cough, alliance, cough*) would need to do is create 10 alt factions and keep a tile in the 1-5 range. The alt factions hit it and disband, and no one can ever attack that faction…

if a faction has to be, say, at least lvl 3 to be able to attack a tile, this is basicly prevented.
