Topic: Game Programming / GiTD #34 Completed, congratulations Moocowsgomoo!

I just can’t believe you guys did not vote for me. The Decision is, by far, the most complex and advanced theme based flash game ever created in the history of the gaming industry. I hope that the next time I enter you will all recognize my drag and drop coding prowess. Grats Moocow ;P

Is somebody ever going to ban this lobster guy? He has been on a lobster rampage for quite some time now…

Truefire: Unfortunately, the world never stopped generating for me. I tried different browsers and I do not have a second machine to try it on. Could not get the game to load. If you win I am going to be disappointed only for the fact that I missed out on the best game in the contest.

Elzius: I built a Hut and a Cabin and some wheat fields. The lightning was a really cool graphic. I think I experienced the game to its full effect until you add to it.

qwerber: The light idea is really original. Having a little blind guy follow a light like a ghost would do after the body dies is what this reminded me of. It sparked some concepts for me. The little dude destroys his way to the bottom of the the structure quite well. I’m not sure where you were going with the guy at the top.

Shake_N_Baker: Pretty standard format for a top scrolling space shooter. It would help if the background actually did scroll. It would be much more playable if the movement of the ship was smoothed out. It may have just been me but that ship was quite laggy.

Moocowsgomoo: This game is neat. A clearer tutorial with an explanation on what you are supposed to do exactly would be quite beneficial. A deeper explanation into the complexities of the strategy could only make this game better. i tried to follow the tutorial and came out successful for a few rounds but I still had no idea how I won.

Shalmezad: Interesting game. I was not sure what I was doing or how to win and what made me die but my red particles conquered all other colors. An explanation as to what is going on would be cool. Why did the red absorb other red? Why didn’t the pink absorb other pink? Why did some colors absorb certain other colors but deflected others. The mystery of this game made me play it a few times to just try and figure out the dynamics or logic of what was going on. I almost got to level 3. I think this game expresses the theme well.

Darkscanner: I played this game a few times. On my most recent attempt I ran into a glitch where one of the lumberjack guys got stuck on the edge of the screen. I don’t know what the water drop or peanut thing in the corner was for. It was fun throwing the dudes around. I grew quite a lush forest at night while watching the dudes hack fruitlessly away at my indestructible trees. Any game where I can create forests and rain storms is good with me. The murders of the lumberjacks was just a plus.

My votes are:

Truefire: GiTD34 ?
Elzius: Build and Destroy 5
qwerber: Drop Defense 4
Shake_N_Baker: Space Shooter 6
Moocowsgomoo: Encode 3
Shalmezad: Reactor 1
Darkscanner CreateDestroy 2

You could add a developer mode to the loading screen so we might be able to see exactly where it gets stuck on each client maybe. It seems to be particular to certain circumstances.

No need to apologize good sir. :3

yeap, tried small and normal. My laptop plays every game on Kong perfectly fine, even the processor demanding games like Outernaughts, maybe it is the server that it is hosted from?

okay, with Google chrome, which has Flash Player plugin that automatically updates with every new version through Google Updater, the game stays on the loading screen. With Firefox, it crashes the browser after multiple “continue” busy script pop-ups. Fully updated Flash all the way around. I don’t think that 3g RAM with Intel 1.73ghz processor has what it takes to run your game true.

I really want to see what is behind that loading screen.

Those fonts are killing me. D:

I know, I really like the intro background and I went through about 10 different fonts and colors to see what would look best yet still look sort of alienated and readable. The being from another galaxy do not speak our language very well. _

I was going to have a series of questions leading up to different events depending on choices sort of like those “choose your adventure” books but It would have ended up unfinished because it would have literally read like a book.

Well, Here it is.

Requires FP11.4+, fairly RAM heavy (I’ll fix that later)

E: Replaced link with a version built for 11.4 rather than 11.7

11.4 already? I was very excited to see what was building behind my processor but alas, the game refused to load on my 3gb ram laptop. :3

Thnx stickman! that will most likely be the only contribution I have for this GiTD. _ I am brainstorming on something though but I know my track record too well. Looking forward to seeing what your creative minds come up with though.

Wow, tough competition this time around. I am glad i didn’t enter lol. The contrast of the quality of games is quite notable when something is up for grabs besides bragging rights.

Topic: Game Programming / GiTD [#31] Game Reviewing and Critiquing

I have seem some very off the wall games enter GiTD. Some having nothing at all to do with the theme or some poking at the theme or some being the exact opposite of the theme. The beauty of public criticism and on public contests is that both parties can be as serious or as playful with the content as they like I think. _
I was tempted to create a really long drawn out serene introduction to a game then have a monster flash in and pound out some diabolical sound effect scream or something then have the game over. Thus; using the element of surprise.
Someone mentioned coding “elements” which could have been really fun if i had been able to put more into it. There is actually a card game on kong called Elements of which I have a fully upgraded “Time” deck. It is badged, give it a play!

The issue is definitely in the collisions lava. Not sure if I will ever fix it. ;P
Congrats to the winner!

I think you may be right about the lag there stick. It has to do with the spawn rate of the enemies and most likely it is the faulty collision detection because I do have a function in there that is supposed to drain hp upon contact that does not work. (it is implemented in the bullet behaviors and the enemy behaviors) so that can def lag it out if i have a few broken algorithms looping. I think the whole thing would speed up if I just removed bullets and health altogether so that it becomes a simple avoider game. It actually is kinda fun if you play it like that. Better than the lag. I removed the “reload” someplace upon hero stage exit but he does die as well which is why you cannot come back from leaving the stage.

3ndl3ss: I am 100% sure that the actors and the bullets are killed upon leaving the screen.

The worst of the flaws is that the game actors are not actually cleaning up after themselves and so the game starts to slow down almost immediately.

I am pretty sure that it is the IDE that creates the lag and if you have ever seen the raw code that stencyl creates then you will see that there is a lot of unnecessary business in it. There is probably some way to clean it up but as I had only played with the IDE for about a week before creating something the first experiment actually has brought results through your criticisms. I appreciate all the pointers peeps!   :)

createActor(getActorType(24), 0, 0, FRONT);
createActor(getActorType(24), 0, 388, FRONT);
createActor(getActorType(22), 0, 0, FRONT);
createActor(getActorType(22), 645, 0, FRONT);
hp = 3;
propertyChanged("
hp", _hp);
actor.killSelfAfterLeavingScreen();

(ect..more syntax)

if((_hp > 1))
{
hp -= 1;
propertyChanged("
hp", _hp);
}

else
{
actor.die();
ect…

I am 100% sure that the actors and the bullets are killed upon leaving the screen.
