Topic: GemCraft Labyrinth / save on kong?

Yah.. far from impossible and technically not that difficult. More of a pain in the ass than anything else… having to write new APIs, documentation, testing and supporting them, throwing on some new servers/slices, preventing cheating etc all for no direct financial return. I don’t think Kong would gain much for the effort required.

That is if EVERY user plays EVERY game and EVERY game saves 10kb of data.

Considering that the bulk of the 5m accounts are delinquent and that the bulk of games don’t have the Kong API and that 10kb is complete overkill… it is more likely that the average user plays about 10% of games with the API which is only about 10% of overall games and only requires about 1kb of save data then you are out by a factor of 1000 and 2-3TB is closer to a realistic requirement.

Probably not entirely true considering that kong already has a high score table, tracks every game ever rated and every badge achieved for every user. A clean highscore implementation would not take up much more space than what is already being used.

And apart from that, it’s way different from the way flash games currently work. If you were to save on Kong’s server, a dev had to implement a different saving method for every single website you can play the game on. Right now, it works the same for every website so it’s much less work.

Not really. It wouldn’t be a stretch to add a simple API to the existing kong APIs allowing a developer to create a method that pairs the game UID, player UID and game data.

yah.. I bought it.. not really worth it at this point in time. The game play is very limited and repetitive. They intend to release a lot more content s I would wait and see what happens.

Topic: General Gaming / iPhone/Android game competition (would like some opinions)

Heya,

I operate a game development company and we are moving into iPhone/iPad and Android game development and have already released 3 titles. I would like to start an initiative that servers two purposes:

- Help young budding game designers to see their ideas come to fruition and put some money in their pockets.
- Give my company an avenue for game ideas.

My concern is this: I need to run a business and intend on using the ideas of other people. This is often thought of as being a way of stealing peoples ideas or otherwise not rewarding people appropriately. Now, my intentions are sincere and I already volunteer a lot of my time to mentoring young game designers. So I would like to hear from people interested in how I might structure a system that people think is fair to contributors at the same time as being sustainable from a business perspective.

Here is my thinking:
- People offer a game concept (could be a few words, could be a doc with designs, whatever)
- The game concept is kept private from the public over the period of a calendar month
- My company chooses a game to develop
- My company offers a share of the revenue generated from game sales
- Each month the non-selected game concepts are published
- Whatever game concept gets the most feedback, reviews, ratings etc is given a cash reward (or rewards are given at random if gaming the system becomes an issue)
- My company does whatever it can to assist and mentor contributors with a focus on those that have had their design chosen and those who have had theirs pier-rated highly.

What do you think? is this something that interests you? how would you like it to be structured?

edit for the record: my company has been trading for 5 years, is well established and has a team of 10 designers/developers. We do not intend to compete with Kong in anyway, and in fact would embrace collaboration on that front.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Sacred Seasons 2 MMORPG] No More Pay to Play

@babyface_blues – some people don’t like grinding and would prefer to experiment with various character setups before deciding to spend real world money. SS2 is very focussed on the payers and offers little (compared to SS1) for those that don’t want to spend or only want to spend small.

@nightfire11 – before telling people to read and calling the morons perhaps you should do some reading yourself. Such as my post and the other threads on alternative ways for the developers to make money without the need for basing almost everything on gold.

Well, how do you expect companies to make money if they spend several thousand dollars to make a free game?

- Ad revenue (like what developers get on Kong)
- Advertising (inline and during preloaders)
- Premium item purchases
- Monthly subscriptions for premium content (like most MMO/MMORPGs)
- Real Estate / Housing / Pets
- Offline merchandise
- Events/Tournament fees (to win prizes of gold etc)
- External surveys
- Donations

Should I continue? all of these are possible and common amongst other games and none of them are particularly restrictive.

I agree. I think the SS2 creators should focus on user volume and passive income generation (such as the ad revenue derived from sites like Kong) instead of the brute force approach to gold purchasing that leaves non-payers frustrated with limited items.

There’s this thing called anticipating later outcomes, you should try it.

Early game isn’t the problem.

I think it’s both.

I have played quite a bit, am enjoying it, and haven’t forked out any cash… however, I don’t feel as though I will commit much more than I have as I can see that I am already significantly limited and will continue to be as I progress. I’m just not interested. From a user perspective the SS1 model worked a treat… why change it?

While this is true it is still very difficult to accumulate any reasonable amount of gold to buy anything. The wiki has only identified a total of 77 gold that can be gained from quests. What does that buy you? Almost nothing. Sure, there will be more gold rewards but seriously…. who wants to grind for days in order to be able to buy only one entry level weapon?

Originally posted by klafkaljsuijfoe:

I had the same problem. I went and found out what my password was, and it ended up for some reason a bunch of random numbers, nothing like what it was. See if you can check what it says your password was, maybe that will help.

That was the first thing I tried, and it responded with ‘invalid username’. Perhaps the issue was resolved but it was present and given that you cannot reinstate your kong account (yet) once starting a new SS2 account it leaves people like me very little option.

Guys, did you even SEE the description of this game? “Open Beta”. OPEN BETA guys, I mean really, this game is fresh out video game gene pool. Give it some time to grow and develop, and correct some of the wrongs it has, like gold mongering (Which I have to agree open) and problems like “Red Plimith”, where the whole town goes red.

These problems are all big, I agree, but come on, give the game time to correct its wrongs.

The revenue model is integrated into almost every aspect of the game so it is hardly likely that they will change it based on Beta feedback, especially after people have already purchased. The gold structure is here to stay (which is why I am not).

Given that it is Beta, and assuming that they wanted to actually test the model, they should have release an open beta under a time trial where people start with X gold and their accounts reset after a period of time (such as a week). Having a closed beta using already converted SS1 payers has resulted in a skewed perspective of what would work for the broader audience. I’d hazzard a guess that the entire beta team didn’t have a single noob player amongst them (or a token one at best).

Have your developers tested with the debug player in browser? I’m getting a lot of errors most of which relate to domain security issues. The fail silently on the normal Flash player but are obvious and frequent with the debug.

Same problem here.. only I did see the transfer option. It simply didn’t work and stated that my username didn’t exist n SS1. I’ve spoken to a number of other people who had the same experience.

Jake, email admin@sacredseasons.com and tell them the problem. You may get some help but I doubt it ill come quickly.

While this is true the current model has way too many cash hooks IMO.

Normally the freemium model has a good balance between free play (the majority of functions and content) and premium play (the added little features and benefits). The SS2 model has cash grabs injected into pretty well every aspect of the game. Sure, you can play for free but you are constantly being reminded that you are missing out on a whole bunch of stuff. This acts as a barrier for entry to new users whereas a good system should have users hooked before pushing add-ons and payment.

You only have to look at the other mmorpgs out there to realise that successful models are based around small micro-payments or subscriptions over volumes of users as opposed to large payments from a smaller base. SS2 falls into the latter and is unlikely to ever generate the sort of user base that other games have (runescape has 100,000s of congruent users as opposed to the current 500 or so using SS2).

Great game, stupid business model.

Yah.. there is information floating about that explains how to do a memory hack that allows you to hit the high score tables with false information (I suspect this is the case with fopper as Xerg seems to be considered the highest player over at the SS site). Yes, you can hack the tbales but it has no ongoing effct with your character. Remember, MMORPGs like this have all of the ciritical data on the server-side… to hack the game you have to hack the server.

Fog – you are making a moot point. There is no point in buying every thing in the shop… why would you buy a weapon only to then buy a better one? all you need to buy are the high level weapons and maybe the occasional one while levelling up. 3000kreds/$20usd gives you ample gold to do this. If you want to buy weapons in between levels you should have ample silver to do so.

The reality is that if the filtration plan were to go ahead as intended it would amount to nothing more than political suicide and a little hiccup in the games and entertainment industries. It is fundamentally flawed in many ways, is easy to circumvent and will have significant undesirable impact on AU industry. The only reason why there is any suggestion that it might go ahead (as is) is due to pressure from conservative christian groups who have equally no idea of what they are talking about. Eventually, there may be some sites blocked (CP, etc) but fr the mass of users (http, p2p, gamers etc) there will be zero effect.
